Chapter 199 - Almost Confession

"We stood too close for lies."

Silver made it halfway across Old Campus before she heard footsteps behind her.

She knew who it was before she turned around. The same way she always knew when Eli was in a room, that awareness she'd developed without meaning to. The kind that made her hyperconscious of his presence even when she was actively trying to ignore it.

"Silver, wait."

She stopped on the path between Bingham and Vanderbilt, the old stone buildings looming on either side. The drizzle had turned to actual rain, light but persistent, the kind that soaked through clothes slowly. Students hurried past with umbrellas and hoods pulled up, eager to get out of the weather.

Silver turned.

Eli stood about ten feet away, his jacket already dark with rain. His hair was plastered to his forehead, water dripping down his face. He looked like he'd run to catch up with her.
