Chapter 64 - Chapter 64: Instant KO Mewtwo

New Island.

The battle raged on.

With Silas orchestrating the fight so well, even against Mewtwo, his four Pokémon held their own—maybe even pushing Mewtwo onto the defensive. For once, Mewtwo found itself in a real bind, because Silas's four Pokémon were working together almost seamlessly.

If it tried to hit Gengar, it had to risk Dragonite and Charizard's Hyper Beams. If it went after Dragonite and Charizard, Gengar was ready to pounce. And that's not even counting the threat of Tyranitar, hurling Hyper Beam from the ground!

Mewtwo found itself stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Attack? Mutually assured destruction.

Retreat? It would never end.

Neither option was acceptable—Mewtwo's pride wouldn't let it. It considered itself the strongest Pokémon in this world. There was no way it would accept being hurt or humiliated in battle. No way it could allow itself to run away.

And yet… there was no solution to this stalemate.

Sure, Mewtwo was arrogant, but it wasn't stupid. It could sense that while these four Pokémon weren't as strong as it was, the gap wasn't nearly as wide as expected. Especially Gengar and Dragonite—between them and Mewtwo, there was only a razor-thin margin.

While Mewtwo wrestled with frustration, Gengar and Dragonite exchanged a loaded glance. For all this time, neither had landed a decisive blow—heck, Mewtwo hadn't even taken a scratch! That just didn't match the reputation of a Legendary Pokémon.

"Dragonite." Gengar drifted beside him, lowering its voice, "Do you think maybe this guy is…"

Gastly didn't finish, but Dragonite instantly got the drift, narrowing his eyes, "Worth a shot?"

"Yeah." Gengar nodded.

Suddenly—Gengar and Dragonite exploded forward, charging straight at Mewtwo!

Their abrupt assault caught Mewtwo off guard. Had the strategy changed?

Surprised or not, Mewtwo was quick to react. It spread both arms, summoned a glowing blue Shadow Ball in each hand, and hurled them at the two attackers!

"Ready up."

As the Shadow Balls screamed toward them, Dragonite threw Gengar a calm word and instantly accelerated, meeting the Shadow Balls head on!

'BOOM!' 'BOOM!'

Twin Shadow Balls erupted on Dragonite's body, shrouding him in black smoke! Mewtwo blinked in disbelief. Despite battling for over ten minutes, it knew Dragonite's speed—if he wanted to dodge, he absolutely could. But Dragonite hadn't dodged; he'd just tanked both blasts. What the heck was going on?

What stunned Mewtwo more was that, despite a few scrapes, Dragonite broke out of the smoke at full speed, Rasengan spinning in his claws, lunging for Mewtwo. "Impossible!" Mewtwo blurted.

"Oh, it's possible." Gengar's chilling voice echoed from behind—full of knowing. "If you were a fully ascended Legendary, that last hit would've finished Dragonite off. But your godhood isn't complete yet. Right now, you're just a proto–Legendary. You're only slightly above us."

Gengar wasn't just talking—his attack was already in motion!

This time, a chill ran up Mewtwo's spine. He could feel that these attacks were faster, sharper, stronger than before. Even Teleport was too slow to get him out of this mess.

And sure—Mewtwo was the God of Psychics, and using Teleport for him was as easy as breathing, but even breathing takes a moment of prep. That second was all Gengar needed—to drive a hit home right at Mewtwo's vulnerable spot!

One-hit kill!

This was one of two signature moves that Silas had Gengar drill for the past month—land at least two full-power hits on a weak point within a single second. And while Mewtwo was essentially a proto–Legendary, Gengar couldn't pin down a classic weak point—so he just aimed two brutal strikes straight at Mewtwo's skull!

Bam! Bam!

"Ahhh!!"

Mewtwo took two full-force blows to the back of his head, staggered, and howled in pain!

Right as he reeled, Dragonite's attack landed!

Because Dragonite was using elemental power, not chakra, to form Rasengan, he couldn't pull off a classic Rasengan—instead, it became a version shaped by dragon energy, like a swirling elemental shuriken.

Dragonite slammed Rasengan straight into Mewtwo's gut. The moment it connected, Mewtwo started spinning wildly, then soared up into the sky, launched higher and higher!

'BOOOOOM!'

A massive explosion echoed across the heavens.

A mushroom cloud like a nuclear blast lit up the night, sending shockwaves that tore the surrounding clouds to shreds—letting starlight pour down. And as the last sparks faded, Mewtwo came plummeting back to the earth, body scorched and limp, eyes spinning… completely out of commission!

The speed of that reversal left Silas in total shock.

What just happened?

Was the anime lying to him all along?

How did Mewtwo just get double-teamed and one-shot by Gastly and Dragonite?

Silas wasn't the only one stunned. Up in the sky, both Charizard and Tyranitar were just as gobsmacked—this couldn't be real, right? Legendary Pokémon was supposed to mean something! How had Mewtwo been flattened in an instant?

As Trainer and two Pokémon gawked, Dragonite carried Mewtwo back and landed before Silas, announcing, "It's done."

"Uh… yeah." Silas nodded reflexively, then, feeling something was off, quickly asked, "Wait—what just happened? At first, you guys couldn't even touch him. Then suddenly—bam—Instant KO? Was Mewtwo not actually a Legendary?"

"He is," Dragonite confirmed, then amended, "To be precise, he's a Legendary in the making."

In the making?

That threw Silas for a loop. He frowned, "What does that mean?"

"Here's what's up…" Gengar drifted out from behind Dragonite to explain, "Mewtwo really is destined to be a Legendary, but his godhood isn't fully formed yet. Until that happens, he can only count as a demi-god, with abilities on par with me or Dragonite. Once his godhood solidifies, we wouldn't be a match for him at all!"

That answer only made Silas more confused. "What do you mean by 'godhood'?"

"It's the symbol of a true Legendary!"

"The acknowledgement of the world itself!"

Gengar and Dragonite answered together. Then Gengar continued, "We're both thinking the same thing—if you want to become a real Legendary, you need that godhood. Without it, no matter how deep your elemental insights or how strong your abilities, you'll always be stuck just shy of the boundary, like us."

The explanation finally gave Silas a clue. He kept going, "So when will you guys get your 'godhood'?"

Achieve godhood?

Gengar and Dragonite exchanged a bitter glance. Dragonite sighed, "We don't get to. We can't."

"What?!" Silas blurted, pointing to the collapsed Mewtwo. "You said he's at your power level—so why can he, but you can't?"

Dragonite sighed, envy in his tone, "It's not that we 'can't'—it's that it isn't up to us. Godhood isn't something you learn—it's something the world bestows. Mewtwo never had to earn it; he was just gifted godhood at birth. That's why he grew so strong so fast."

At that, Silas pressed, "Then how can you guys get your own godhood?"

"Two ways." Gengar held up two fingers and started counting, "One: You help us track down an unknown godhood somewhere out there—but it has to match our element. Two: You help us take out a real god-tier Legendary and snatch their godhood for ourselves."

"But the first way's basically impossible—there are only seventy-two Myth slots in this whole world, and Arceus already holds thirteen of them himself. And the second way isn't any easier. Legendarys are stupid strong; forcing one to hand over its godhood is pretty much the same as killing it!"

"Hold on, though." Silas jumped in, catching a flaw, "Then how come there are so many Legendary Pokémon in the world?"

"Those aren't real Legendaries." This time, Dragonite answered, his voice flat. "They're just rare Pokémon that humans have labeled 'Legendary.' Like Moltres, Articuno, or Zapdos. They're stronger, rarer, and have a higher ceiling, so you humans call them Legendary, but that's all."

"Exactly," Gengar confirmed, nonchalant. "Pokémon like that? Dragonite and I could mop the floor with them. Even Charizard and Tyranitar could take on bunches at a time. They're just powerful, rare Pokémon—nothing more."

"Got it."

Silas nodded, finally piecing things together.

To truly 'break through' as a Legendary, you needed that godhood—and you only got it by being chosen or by taking it from another Legendary. Any Pokémon without a Myth could never truly be called Legendary—just rare.

And while Mewtwo technically had godhood and was on the path to becoming a true Legendary, he simply hadn't had enough time yet to fully grow into it. That's why his power was still on the level with Dragonite and Gastly. Understanding this cheered Silas up. Mewtwo would eventually become as strong as in the original story—it would just take time and growth.

"One last question." Silas eyed Gengar and Dragonite, still puzzled. "At first, you couldn't lay a finger on Mewtwo. Then you suddenly KOd him in one go. What gives?"

"Hesitation," Gengar explained quickly. "At first, we couldn't get close because Mewtwo radiated the aura of a full Legendary. We didn't dare go all out. But as the fight went on, we realized there was something off about his abilities. Once we spotted that he hadn't actually broken through, we had no reason to hold back."

"Yeah." Dragonite nodded in agreement, shooting Silas a proud look. "To be honest, Master, a lot of the credit goes to you!"

"Me?" Silas blinked, surprised.

"Absolutely." Gengar said, honestly impressed. "Those moves you designed for us? Ridiculously powerful—way stronger than standard signature moves. With those, we were able to break through and finish the fight in an instant."

So that's how it was.

Silas was amazed—he'd just wanted his Pokémon to have more options, maybe the element of surprise. He never imagined their custom moves, in his team's hands, could pack such a punch and bring down a near-top-tier Trainer instantly. It set his mind to racing—he started running through which other moves might suit which Pokémon best…

As Silas thought, time ticked slowly by.

He was deep in thought until the revived Mewtwo stirred, breaking the silence.

"Awake?" Silas arched an eyebrow at Mewtwo.

"Hmph." Mewtwo turned its head away sullenly.

Silas just grinned, unfazed, and offered, "Look, I know what you're searching for—but I can't give you that answer. I'm searching for something too. We might be looking for different truths, but—how about joining me? Become one of my companions. We could search for our answers together."

"Such hypocrisy, human!" Mewtwo spat coldly.

"Heh." Silas didn't get angry, only kept smiling. "Come on, you're the clearest on that score, aren't you?"
