"Danny! Jesus, you're finally back!" Alex's relief was obvious when his Bluetooth headset chimed with Danny's familiar contact signature. "I can talk to your dad if you want—explain the situation. I'm sure he'll understand you were just trying to help a friend."
"Actually, he already caught me," Danny said with surprising cheerfulness. "But here's the weird part—he didn't kill me."
"Wait, what?"
"I know, right? Completely unexpected. And apparently, it's all thanks to you."
Alex was genuinely confused. "How is any of this thanks to me?"
"Are you free tonight? Dad wants you to come over for dinner. He said something about a business proposal."
"Your father wants to meet with me?" Alex couldn't hide his bewilderment. "Danny, what the hell happened while you were in hiding?"
"He mentioned something about corporate collaboration, but wouldn't give me details. Just asked me to invite you over," Danny explained. "Can you make it around seven?"
Alex agreed immediately. Whether for his friendship with Danny or simple curiosity about what Richard Reeves could possibly want from a gaming startup, this was a dinner he couldn't miss.
The Reeves estate looked even more imposing at sunset, its neo-classical columns casting long shadows across the circular driveway. Alex was surprised to find both Danny and Isabella waiting for him at the front entrance—usually, Danny would just text him to come around to the side door.
"Why the formal reception?" Alex asked as he climbed out of his car.
Isabella practically bounced on her toes with excitement. "Because I'm meeting a celebrity! Though you're terrible at keeping secrets, Alex Morrison."
Alex felt his stomach drop. "Isabella, I don't know what you—"
"Oh please," she interrupted with a knowing smile. "You think I couldn't figure out that my brother's best friend was behind Avatar? Especially after Danny's corporate messaging stunt?"
Danny grinned sheepishly. "Yeah, she's been putting the pieces together for weeks. Don't worry, she hasn't told anyone."
"I understand why you kept it quiet," Isabella added. "But Uncle Marcus is going to be so proud when he finds out. This is incredible, Alex!"
Alex wasn't entirely sure how his father would react to learning his "irresponsible" son had become a successful entrepreneur, but Isabella's enthusiasm was infectious.
"Come on," Isabella said, grabbing Alex's arm. "I have to show you something before dinner."
She led him to the family's entertainment room, where a premium VR setup occupied one corner. "Check out what I built in my Infinite Realms territory."
Alex followed her into the virtual space and immediately understood why she'd spent so much money. Isabella had recreated Pandora's bioluminescent jungle with obsessive attention to detail, using what looked like every single decorative item from Avatar's merchandise catalog.
"Isabella, this must have cost you a fortune," Alex said, genuinely impressed. The virtual forest was stunning—woodsprites drifting through glowing vegetation, Pandoran creatures moving through the underbrush, bioluminescent flowers pulsing with alien light.
"Shh!" Isabella whispered conspiratorially. "Don't let Dad hear you say that. I may have slightly exceeded my discretionary spending budget."
Alex laughed. He hadn't expected one of his closest friends' sisters to become such a devoted fan of his creation.
"There's our guest of honor!" Richard Reeves emerged from his study with the kind of genuine warmth Alex had rarely seen from him. Usually, Richard treated Alex with polite but distant courtesy—the way successful parents interact with their children's less accomplished friends.
Tonight felt completely different.
"Mr. Reeves, thank you for inviting me," Alex said as they settled into the living room's leather furniture.
Richard waved off the formality. "Please, call me Richard. And frankly, I should be thanking you. This Avatar phenomenon has been fascinating to observe from a business perspective."
"Danny mentioned you were interested in some kind of collaboration?"
"Exactly." Richard's expression shifted to serious business mode. "Meridian Corp has been looking for innovative marketing partnerships, and Avatar presents a unique opportunity. Specifically, we're interested in licensing Avatar imagery and characters for our new energy drink line—Velocity."
Alex had seen Velocity's advertising around the city. Meridian was positioning it as a premium sports drink targeted at gamers, athletes, and young professionals—exactly the demographic that was buying Avatar merchandise.
"We're launching a major marketing campaign next quarter," Richard continued, "and we'd love to incorporate Avatar designs into our packaging. Nothing too commercial or cheap-looking—we're thinking elegant character silhouettes, maybe some of those bioluminescent plant patterns."
Alex was genuinely impressed by the proposal. Richard had clearly done his research and understood Avatar's aesthetic appeal beyond just slapping blue aliens on random products.
"That sounds great," Alex said. "Given our friendship, I'd be happy to provide the licensing at a significant discount—"
"Absolutely not," Richard interrupted firmly. "Alex, I appreciate the gesture, but this needs to be a proper business transaction. If we're going to have a professional relationship, it has to be built on fair market terms."
Alex recognized the wisdom in that approach. Taking family friend discounts would make future collaborations awkward and potentially damage their personal relationships if anything went wrong.
"Beyond packaging," Richard continued, "we're also interested in a promotional tie-in. QR codes on Velocity products that enter customers into contests for Avatar merchandise—collectible figures, branded apparel, custom VR equipment, maybe even some of those premium gaming setups."
The conversation sparked Alex's entrepreneurial instincts. Avatar merchandise was already selling incredibly well through Infinite Realms' platform, but they hadn't explored traditional retail partnerships. Physical products could reach customers who weren't necessarily gamers but had been exposed to Avatar through social media and mainstream coverage.
"Richard, that's brilliant," Alex said. "We should definitely develop a full line of Avatar collectibles. The market demand is clearly there, and some of the limited edition items from popular Infinite Realms properties sell for tens of thousands."
Mrs. Patterson appeared in the doorway. "Mr. Reeves, dinner is ready."
Over dinner, Richard and Alex worked out the basic framework for their collaboration. Beyond the Velocity partnership, they discussed broader promotional opportunities that could benefit both Meridian's consumer reach and Avatar's brand expansion.
"Alex, I have to tell you," Richard said as they finished the main course, "you've really impressed me with how you've handled this success. Your parents must be incredibly proud. Marcus is lucky to have a son who's found his calling so young."
Richard's expression darkened as he glanced at Danny. "Unlike some people I could mention, who seem determined to waste every opportunity they're given."
"Actually, Mr. Reeves," Alex said carefully, "Danny's been working on something pretty innovative. He didn't disappear just to avoid consequences—he's been doing market research for a new business concept."
"You mean those trendy restaurants?" Richard's skepticism was obvious. "They haven't even broken even on their startup costs."
"This isn't about restaurants," Alex said, building momentum. "Danny's identified an emerging industry with massive growth potential. Conservative estimates put the total addressable market at over a hundred billion dollars within the next decade."
The entire Reeves family stared at Alex in shock. Isabella set down her fork. Mrs. Reeves looked between her son and Alex with confusion. Richard's eyebrows climbed toward his hairline.
Danny himself looked the most surprised of all, thinking to himself: I'm apparently working on something worth a hundred billion dollars? How come nobody told me?
