Chapter 28 - WHEN THE PAST COMES KNOCKING

{AURORA'S POV}

We moved through the trees like a flowing river with Morganna guiding us every step of the way. The ache in my legs had settled deep into my bones, a slow throb that matched the rhythm of our footsteps. Still, there was a steadiness in us today—a thread pulled taut through grief and hunger and kept from snapping only by the woman leading us, and the promise that we were going to somewhere that didn't offer anything but death and despair.

I stayed close to Kai, Vivienne, and Eden. Somehow, in the space left by everything I'd lost, they'd managed to fit themselves into it.

Kai had this way of making everyone laugh, even when their faces were gaunt with fatigue. Vivienne on the other hand, seemed to make it her mission to drive him insane, teasing him endlessly, poking at him in ways that made him throw his arms up in frustration.
