Chapter 38 - A STEP TOO LATE

{AURORA'S POV}

We stayed low behind the bush, the branches clawing at our cloaks as we peered out at Heron from a safe distance. The walls rose high above us, cutting into the night sky. Torches bobbed along the ramparts, carried by guards pacing in steady lines.

None of us spoke. The only noises were the horses shifting under us and the faint rasp of our breathing.

A branch snapped behind me, and I flinched before realizing it was only Theo. He slipped back through the shadows and crouched beside us. His face said it before his words did.

"The old sewer tunnel's sealed," he whispered. "Bricked up from the inside. We can't get through."

A chorus of curses broke the silence. Lukas swore under his breath. Vivienne smacked her reins against her saddle in frustration. Giselle let out a harsh sigh. Even Eden looked away, his jaw tight.

My stomach knotted. I leaned toward Theo. "So what you're saying is… there's no other way in?"

He didn't answer. His silence told me enough.
