Chapter 24 - GTAG Chapter 24 One Month

GTAG Chapter 24 One Month

"What exactly… do you want to do?"

The General did not believe for a second that Godzilla heading directly toward the wormhole was a coincidence. He leaned more toward the idea that Godzilla had discovered something.

But what the General wanted most right now was for Godzilla to go nowhere.

With funding for the Jaeger Program being slashed by every nation in favor of building massive walls, their base had become the last operational stronghold in the world. Within a year, the rest of the funding would be gone as well, because by then the walls would be finished.

A simple ring of concrete fences meant to keep Kaiju out.

Anyone who understood the Kaiju knew that believing in walls was foolish. Walls would only trap humans inside with no way to escape.

Yet somehow, so many people believed those walls would actually work.

The General would never place his hopes on brittle stone. As long as there were Jaegers still standing and pilots still alive, he had to gamble everything on destroying the wormhole.

This was humanity's only chance.

And then Godzilla appeared.

Had his patience not been forged over decades, the General would have already been cursing out loud. Truth be told, he was close to doing it anyway.

Anyone preparing to throw everything into a final battle, only to have a new factor appear that could ruin the entire plan—who could stay calm then?

The Jaegers had returned from their mission without a scratch, which should have been good news. But no one, not the pilots nor the people inside the Shatterdome, could bring themselves to smile.

Not because they had gone in prepared to sacrifice themselves only to return empty-handed.

But because of the new monster.

Instinctively, everyone in the base regarded Godzilla as an enemy.

And in truth, when it came to Godzilla, they felt they had no chance at all.

That was the reason the atmosphere inside the Shatterdome had sunk into such despair.

Even when they learned the world's last Jaeger base was on the verge of being shut down, they hadn't felt this hopeless.

...

Perhaps because the wormhole had not stabilized, after sending through four Kaiju, it had gone quiet.

But Godzilla knew the ones on the other side—the Precursors—were now crafting Kaiju designed specifically to counter him.

Whether they could succeed was uncertain.

That didn't stop Godzilla from making the wormhole his new territory.

Though not quite "home," it made no difference.

When he had first arrived, he had attempted to use the wormhole to locate the Precursor homeworld and shift directly there. But his temporal power had never been something he could control.

The only thing he could reliably do was sense other worlds and force his way through.

Even traversing space itself remained beyond him.

Perhaps, as he continued to grow, he would one day reach that level.

But not now. For now, he could only wait for the Precursors to send more Kaiju, then find a way to break through.

If his memory was correct, this wormhole was "locked." Without Kaiju genetic material, no one could pass through.

Meanwhile, the Precursors themselves were locked in argument.

Earth could indeed be reshaped into a world suitable for them, but with Godzilla present, they debated abandoning it.

Even from a brief clash, they knew the truth: unless they created a Category 7—or stronger—Kaiju, none would stand a chance against him.

But creating a Category 7 Kaiju was not easy. Time, resources—both were monumental problems.

In the end, greed outweighed fear.

They wanted Godzilla's corpse.

If they could obtain it, they would gain a weapon of unimaginable power.

At the very least, such a corpse would be equivalent to a Category 7 weapon. A top-tier bioweapon.

Securing it would be a monumental achievement.

Consensus reached, the Precursor "weapon factories" roared to life.

On their world floated a massive living organism, a bloated mass of flesh pulsing in the sky.

Pulling back further, it was clear this was no factory, but a colossal, tumor-like creature—alive.

Yes, alive.

And inside its vast body, larger than entire towns, ran endless "assembly lines" producing monster parts.

Bones. Muscles. Brains.

Kaiju were not born from eggs. They were assembled.

That was why each Kaiju bore a unique form and strange weaponry.

It was also how Dr. Newton had been able to create counter-Kaiju so quickly—by sharing neural pain with a secondary Kaiju brain and extracting Jaeger intel.

Now, more than half the "flesh factory" shut down, its energy diverted entirely to one chamber.

And from that chamber, after devouring half the factory's reserves, a Category 7 Kaiju was being forged.

Time passed.

While Godzilla prowled idly around the wormhole, a month slipped by.

The world had been eerily quiet. Not a single Kaiju had appeared in all that time. It was as if peace had finally arrived.

The wall surrounding humanity's last bastions had also been completed.

Even though that same wall had already been shattered once under Kaiju assault, the leaders clung to their decision.

Though the public had lost faith after seeing it fall, there were still plenty who swallowed the excuses.

The wall had only failed because it wasn't thick enough. Reinforce it, and it would hold.

Empty words, but some still believed.

Meanwhile, the internet buzzed with arguments.

Inside the Shatterdome, the base remained open.

Official support had dried up, but not all humans were fools. After watching the wall crumble, wealthy donors stepped in, funneling money back into Jaeger development.

The General's fiery speeches had also played their part.

In the end, people were convinced that Jaegers—not walls—were the true hope of survival.

History had already proven that once Kaiju entered a city, that city was as good as gone.

Back when humanity had no Jaegers, they had lost three entire cities just to bring down a single Kaiju.
