Rem walked down the street with the Shadow Fall Fox tucked in her arms, its fur brushing against her wrist as its tails swayed lazily in the air. Rem glanced towards Amaia, her red eyes narrowing. "Are we going in the right direction, Amaia? Where is the Adventurers Guild you spoke about before? All I see is that large building with a sign of two swords crossed over each other."
Amaia followed her gaze, then inclined her head saying "My lady, that is the Adventurers Guild. Many of the people on Elsera can not read or write, so organizations like the Adventures Guild use symbols that everyone can recognize. Two crossed swords mark the Adventures Guild."
Rem's mouth turned into a frown. "Well, I will need to do something about this. Perhaps when we reach the dark elf city of Verda, we can impose new reforms there."
Amaia's eyes moved with unease. "My lady, it's not as easy as that. While Elsera has no slavery, it does have a rigid social system. The nobles and religious orders in power will not welcome the idea of commoners gaining such knowledge. Knowledge is power, and an educated population is not one that can be easily manipulated."
Rem waved her free hand dismissively. "Don't worry Amaia. You said that the dark elves worship a spider goddess named Lilith, didn't you? If that's the case, then everything will work out splendidly."
Amaia fell silent, though a heaviness pressed in on her heart. Her circuits pulsed with a warning she could not understand. The thought of her lady entangling herself with a deity especially one tied to the dark elves filled her with dread. Humanity has never worshiped gods. Their faith has always been given to the House of Remembrance, the rulers who protect and lead them. Ishtar has entrusted Amaia with safeguarding his daughter, while the Daughter of Humanity Lady Rem is adored by all of humanity for her fierce, unyielding heart. This is enough. To Amaia, gods are an unnecessary danger when she has Lady Rem of the Remembrance.
Amaia followed quietly behind Rem. As she pushed open the tall wood doors and stepped inside the Adventurers Guild.
The interior pressed coldly against them. Grey stone walls stretching upwards, heavy and plain, as if the fortress city itself has been build around the guild. Torches glowed in iron sconces, barely pushing back the darkness. Rem frowned, her expression turning sharp. "Amaia, this place could use a woman's touch. Everything about it screams gloom and doom. It makes me think this Adventuring is a male dominated occupation. But worry not Amaia if there is one thing I'm good at, it's overthrowing the status quo."
Amaia rolled her eyes but said nothing, her armored boots echoing softly as she followed Rem deeper inside. The front hall was nearly empty, the receptionist's desk at the far end abandoned for the moment.
Through it all, Rem cradled the Shadow Fall Fox against her chest. The small creature shifted in her arms, its eyes bright with curiosity as it scanned the gloomy hall. Rem's hand moved absently over its back, stroking through its soft black fur. For a single breath, the fox's form shimmered and a third tail came into view before vanishing again, swallowed back up by its own magic.
Rem paid it no mind. Her expression softened as she continued petting it, her eyes narrowing slightly in contentment. "How could any creature I take a liking to be simple?" she said to herself.
Amaia's gaze tightened on the fox, a sigh pressing against her lips. Here we go again, she thought. Her lady has a legendary talent for stumbling into trouble. It was that way back on Earth, too, and it seems nothing has changed here in Elsera.
