Chapter 35 - Being a Good Person is Exhausting

"Whoosh!"

Li Qingyuan, who had been busy all night, breathed a deep sigh of relief in a place where no one was watching. He should have added some points to his constitution, he thought!

Five points of constitution was the normal standard for an adult, but after being busy all night, he still felt quite tired.

There was nothing he could do. The attacks from the Skeleton Birds at night were simply incessant. The Lord only knew why those poisonous scorpion-like insects loved to cling to the glass panels, causing those iron-headed Skeleton Birds to charge at the glass panels in a completely suicidal manner.

So, all night, he was like playing whack-a-mole, responsible for chopping off the heads of the strange birds that stuck their heads in, while the others immediately scrambled to plug the holes with all sorts of strange and bizarre things.

Fortunately, after paying the tuition of two more lives, a few brave fellows were finally able to use the temporarily sharpened Spears to stab the Skeleton Birds that poked their heads out, and he was able to get some rest.

After a whole night, he had chopped off the heads of thirteen or fourteen Skeleton Birds. Now he felt as if his tiger's mouth was about to split open.

This was only the first night, and he was already exhausted. If it dragged on to the seventh day, who knew what would happen.

"This is Divine Punishment from The Lord! The Lord is extremely angry with the actions of humanity, which is why He has sent down the Divine Punishment!"

Mrs. Carmody was energetically preaching her doomsday theories, and around her, two or three women were listening attentively.

Yesterday, everyone had dismissed Mrs. Carmody's words as ravings, but after a night of monster attacks, a few of the weaker-willed individuals had begun to wonder if what she said might actually be true.

Not everyone could remain calm after seeing dead bodies. Five people had died overnight. To the listeners, it was just a statistic, but for those surviving in the Supermarket, it was like a nightmare.

Five people they knew had fallen right in front of them, their faces swollen like pig heads, their bodies displaying a purplish-black hue. This sight would definitely scare many people from the peaceful world into wetting their pants.

"I think we should shut her up. If she keeps preaching like this, there might be no one willing to work tomorrow!" David yawned and walked over to Li Qingyuan to suggest.

There was still a lot of work to be done, such as moving all the shelves in the Supermarket and placing them behind the windows.

These iron racks could absolutely be used as a second line of defense after the glass shattered. If those Skeleton Birds dared to attack again tonight, they wouldn't be coming back.

The deaths of those few people last night were definitely a good thing for Li Qingyuan. The most direct change was that now, most people in the Supermarket looked to him for guidance.

At least when he ordered these guys to do something, no one would continue to pay lip service!

"Go, take her out." Li Qingyuan turned his head and glanced at David, then handed the pistol at his waist to him.

"No, this, I mean—" David stammered for a moment, looking at the pistol in front of him, unsure of what to do.

He did feel that Mrs. Carmody was annoying, and she was definitely a negative BUFF in their camp. But asking him to kill someone, he really didn't have the guts.

In the movie plot, the reason he hated Mrs. Carmody so much and finally shot her during the evacuation was mainly because the conflict between them had reached a point of no return.

After all, David was just a painter. Even if his physical fitness might be a bit stronger than Li Qingyuan's now, people subconsciously wouldn't place too much hope in him.

And now, things are completely different.

Whether it was Li Qingyuan's fabricated identity as an Interpol Agent or his effortless monster-slaying skills displayed last night, everyone in the Supermarket saw a glimmer of hope for survival.

Not to mention the reinforcements arriving in ten, no, nine days.

Therefore, Mrs. Carmody could only gather two or three followers now, lacking the power to command a crowd like in the original story.

Since she lacked power, there was no need to escalate things to a life-or-death situation.

"Since you don't even have the courage to kill, why are you telling me all this? Do you think it would be more convenient to have me kill her?" Li Qingyuan glanced at David, his eyelids drooping.

"No, no, I absolutely don't have such thoughts!" David quickly waved his hand, indicating that he was a pure and upright good person, although he was somewhat dissatisfied with Mrs. Carmody, he certainly didn't want to resort to killing her.

This was a normal person's reaction. Those who would readily kill all their enemies were definitely villain archetypes and definitely wouldn't survive to the end.

"It's simple. Tell everyone to divide the Supermarket into two areas. Those who are willing to work and obey will stay here, and those who are unwilling to work and cause trouble will be thrown to the other side," Li Qingyuan considered for a moment and said.

He'd originally planned to save everyone named in the side quests, figuring he might trigger some hidden rewards.

But now, that seemed like a pipe dream.

The attacks of the first night alone had kept him quite busy, let alone the six days remaining.

If he still clung to the idea of accumulating a lot of reward points and hidden quests, he might end up dead here.

The instance world was just a way for him to improve his strength; he didn't want to lose his life here.

After all, it seemed like he always directly crossed over in his physical body. If he died here, he might actually be dead for good.

He definitely wouldn't use his life to verify the relationship between the instance world and the real world.

So, since Mrs. Carmody was an unstable factor, he'd just let her fend for herself.

That woman, aside from her rambling, had no real ability to harm anyone. Her greatest destructive power was her ability to mislead others, but under the pressures of reality, no one would actually believe her theories.

The few women gathered around her now were mainly there because the men who died last night were their husbands. They were experiencing extreme emptiness and sorrow, which was why they were listening to her nonsense.

As for why he didn't just kill Mrs. Carmody directly?

He was currently the savior leading this group, and if he killed her directly, who knew what these people would think.

Everyone fantasizes about a hero saving them when they're in a difficult situation, but once they're slightly safer, they start to question the hero's actions.

The Avengers' previous experience was a clear lesson; he didn't want to put himself in such a passive position.

Of course, the main reason was his lack of strength. If he had the power to sweep through the entire town right now, he wouldn't care what those damn plot characters thought!
