Chapter 99 - But

Zede noticed that Skye had been distracted the entire time and immediately realized she was curious about Asgard's autonomous weapon—the Destroyer.

The Destroyer had once been the battle armor worn by Odin during his youth, when he waged war across the Nine Realms. After Odin turned his focus toward ruling rather than conquest, the armor became obsolete.

The armor Odin now wore as the All-Father was forged together with the Eternal Spear, Gungnir—crafted with the painstaking efforts of the Dwarves of Nidavellir. It far surpassed his old war armor in both craftsmanship and power.

Still, Odin held great affection for the old companion that had once fought beside him through countless battles. Unwilling to let it gather dust, he ordered the armor reforged into an autonomous weapon—to stand guard over Asgard as the Destroyer.

The Destroyer's body was entirely made of Uru metal—priceless beyond measure. When it was later blown apart by Thor, Zede thought to himself that instead of letting S.H.I.E.L.D. take it, it would be far better to keep such a treasure for himself.

With a quick, mischievous glint in his eyes, Zede stood up, slung an arm around Lilith, and said with a grin,"Come on! Skye, Woz—we're going to watch the fun."

The Destroyer's helmet opened segment by segment, releasing searing beams of energy that obliterated every vehicle and building in its path. It advanced toward Thor through the flames and explosions, radiating overwhelming pressure with every step.

The four Asgardian warriors quickly formed a line to block its way.

"You three, draw its attention!" Sif ordered sharply before darting into another street.

Volstagg, Hogun, and Fandral exchanged glances and instinctively split up. After a short running start, Volstagg was launched like a human cannonball by the other two, soaring straight toward the Destroyer.

"For Asgard!"

With a roar, Volstagg raised his battle axe high and brought it down toward the Destroyer's head. His reddish-brown hair and beard streaked through the air, and for a moment, the stout warrior actually looked quite heroic.

Shhh—

From his throne, Loki let out a disdainful chuckle. The next instant, the Destroyer swung a massive backhand that sent Volstagg crashing into the ground. Then it stepped forward, its helmet opening again as it prepared to finish him off.

At the crucial moment, Sif shouted and leapt down from a nearby rooftop. The blessed sword in her hands—empowered by Odin himself—pierced straight into the Destroyer's neck, saving Volstagg's life.

The orange glow between the Destroyer's armor plates flickered out, and the mechanical giant slowly stilled.

Proud of her strike, the warrior maiden lifted her head high, showing both strength and beauty as she turned to Thor with a triumphant smile.

But the Destroyer was not defeated that easily.

Its armor rapidly disassembled and reconfigured, swapping front and back. In an instant, its energy cannon now faced the very spot behind it—where Sif stood exposed.

"Watch out!"

Volstagg's warning and Sif's sharp instincts saved her life. She leapt clear just as a blinding energy beam scorched the space where she'd been standing.

The three warriors regrouped to aid her, fighting the Destroyer together. Their teamwork was admirable, but the difference in power was overwhelming—they were quickly beaten back, barely holding on.

After Mei finished reporting to Nick Fury, she walked over to Zede, handed him her phone, and left without a word. From her expression, Zede immediately knew that Coulson was safe.

"Hey, Black Egg," Zede said lazily into the phone, his tone dripping with mockery. "Have you figured out how to beg me yet?"

From the other end came Nick Fury's grim voice."Beg you? That's not going to happen."

Zede smirked. He knew Fury was as stubborn as a stone in a latrine—hard and full of crap—so he'd already prepared his invisible dagger.

"Don't be so hasty, Black Egg. You can see what's happening out there, right? How long do you think those Asgardian royal guards can hold out? Once the Destroyer kills them all, what do you think the second prince will do after he takes the throne?

'Oh! These damned Midgardians killed my beloved brother! We must avenge him! We'll make Midgard pay!'

What do you think? Did I nail the accent, Black Egg?"

Fury knew Zede was trying to scare him, but the terrifying thing was—he wasn't entirely wrong. That could happen.

"Motherf—!" Fury spat.

There was a long silence before his voice came again, low and tense."So you're just going to stand by and watch them invade Earth?"

"Of course not," Zede said casually, exhaling. "But I don't really care about casualties. A few dead in a war? Doesn't bother me. But you, Black Egg—you care, don't you?"

"Motherf—!"

"Beg me. All you have to do is beg, and I'll take care of that thing."

"Motherf—!"

"Or you can try your luck with a nuke. Don't worry about me—I'll be fine."

"Motherf—!"

Lilith couldn't care less about what Zede and Fury were discussing. She wasn't a woman with grand ideals—her entire world was just Zede.

Skye, on the other hand, did feel sympathy for innocent civilians—but the town had already been fully evacuated. As for the potential war to come, it was still too distant for her to truly grasp.

Woz, of course, didn't object at all. The old demon king had fought through endless wars leading up to the Day of Oma—battle was second nature to him. To him, war was simply the best way to display power.

So while Skye, Lilith, and Woz stayed calm, Jane, Daisy, and Erik were not.

"They're not serious, are they? Are our lives really that cheap?" Daisy said, for once sounding deadly serious.

Thor's face darkened as he looked around—at Jane's worried eyes, Daisy and Erik's unease, Sif and the battered Warriors Three, and the devastated little town around them.

Then, as if releasing a heavy burden, Thor exhaled slowly and made up his mind.

He turned to Zede with a faint smile."Zede, take care of them for me. Keep them safe. I'm going to have a word with my brother."

"No problem," Zede replied easily, then went right back to arguing with Fury. Time was running short—he needed Fury to cave before Thor awakened, or he'd lose the chance to trap him.

Jane grabbed Thor's arm anxiously."What are you doing? It's too dangerous!"

"It's all right, Jane. I have a plan." Thor gently pulled free and strode toward the Destroyer.

Down the ruined street, the two figures—one large, one small—drew steadily closer. Thor spread his arms wide, his voice full of raw emotion.

"Brother… if I've done anything you cannot forgive, then I apologize. If it's the throne you want, take it. But these people are innocent.

Killing them won't give you anything. If someone must die, then let it be me. This is between us—it should end with us."

When the others realized Thor intended to sacrifice himself to protect them, emotions flared instantly.

Jane screamed and tried to run to him, but Erik held her back. Sif, wounded and bleeding, gritted her teeth and forced herself to watch, honoring his courage as a true Asgardian warrior.

Skye looked to Zede with conflicted eyes—her heart softening. She wanted to save Thor. But Zede pulled her into his arms, whispering something in her ear that finally calmed her.

Skye whispered back, pressed against him,"Are you sure this is okay? Just watching him die like that?"

"His old man doesn't care," Zede said, rolling his eyes. "Why should we?"

Before she could say more, the phone buzzed again. Skye stayed silent, nestled in Zede's arms, listening to the conversation.

"Zede! He can't die on Earth!" Fury's voice was urgent now.

"Beg me."

"You—!"

"Beg me."

"Motherf—! Fine, I beg you! Are you happy now, you damn bastard?! Do it already!"

Zede tilted his head slightly, shadows and sharp lines darkening his face."But I refuse. I, Zede Oleg, love saying no to self-righteous people the most. Thor… is about to die."

"Motherf—!"

Zede tossed the phone aside and strode toward the battlefield—just as the Destroyer turned its back on Thor.

Boom!

Everyone had just begun to relax when the Destroyer suddenly spun around and punched Thor square in the chest. Stripped of his godly power, Thor had no way to resist. He was thrown to the ground, barely clinging to life.

Jane broke free and ran to him, reaching him even before Zede did. Cradling Thor in her arms, she sobbed uncontrollably.

"It's over, Jane," Thor murmured weakly. "You're safe now."With those last words, his eyes closed.

Neither Loki nor Zede paid attention to her cries—Loki was opening the Destroyer's faceplate, gathering energy, while Zede fastened his belt, ready to transform.

Still clinging to her conscience, Skye fired two shockwave blasts, grabbed Jane, and retreated just as the energy beam tore through the air.

Boom!

"Transform!"

The Destroyer's beam couldn't pierce the invulnerability of Zede's transformation. The clocklike effect that unfolded around him absorbed the entire blast.

As Kamen Rider Zi-O, Zede simply waved his hand—the leftover energy dispersed like mist. After absorbing so many Ridewatches, his base form had undergone a qualitative leap, no longer comparable to before.

From his throne, Loki roared in fury."Damn it! One after another—Heimdall, Sif, and now even these Midgardians defy me! Kill him!"

The Destroyer had barely received the order when Zede charged. He summoned the Clock Hand Sword and slashed across its arm—only to leave a shallow, pale mark.

The Destroyer slammed its fist down, trying to crush him. But Zede met its strength head-on, catching the blow without yielding an inch.

With the might of an Amazon body and countless power-ups, Zede was now a smaller version of the Hulk himself—and Skye knew exactly how terrifying that strength was.

He shoved the Destroyer's arm aside, leapt into the air, and kicked the giant backward, shouting down at Thor:

"Thor! Why are you just standing there watching?!"
