Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 – The Shadow of Misfortune

The Mystery of the Fate Fairy

University of St. Aldwyn

The campus cafeteria was filled whit students chatting freely. The aroma of coffee mingled whit the smell of freshly prepared food, blending with the warm, slightly stuffy air of the room.

In a corner, Alfen sat with a notebook in his hands. He actually didn't really like crowds, but luckily there was an empty seat here. His mind was busy calculating exam schedules, not caring about other people's chatter.

However, his ears couldn't help catching whispers from the table next to him.

"They say there is a ritual on the full moon night. One candle, some strange chant… if it works, the Fate Fairy will grant your wish."

"Ah, don't lie. That's just a prank story, right?"

"Seriously. I heard it from other students. My friend tried it, and they said it actually worked."

Alfen gave a faint smile. Nonsense. He had heard too many campus myths like this—from ghost games to lucky charms. All ended the same: illusions for those who needed something to hold on to.

He closed his notebook. Just as he stood up, Dentte suddenly appeared, his face beaming.

"Yo, how's it going? Any problems lately?"

Alfen stared blankly. "What do you mean?"

Dentte lifted his chin to look at his friend. "You realize, lately… hmm… really unlucky? Missing reports during presentations, almost falling into a ditch yesterday. Every day there's some kind of misfortune. And… people are saying…?!"

"Saying what?" Alfen narrowed his eyes.

With an irritating grin, Dentte said, "As far as I remember, the black cat you hit last week…?! People are also saying that is the cause. They say you drew the bad luck yourself. Some even suggested—maybe you should try the ritual to get rid of the bad luck, maybe…"

The surroundings went silent as Alfen pictured the incident: the shadow of the small cat's bloody body appeared—motionless on the asphalt, the result of sudden brakes applied too late. He had already paid respect by burying it and tapping his chest four times. How could he possibly be unlucky? He wanted to punch their faces, especially seeing them laugh, but… it was only an assumption, not reality. In the end, he just rolled his eyes.

"Dentte," he said finally, coldly. "You know I don't believe things like that easily. Besides, Im not unlucky, it was just a coincidence. Relax, bro..."

Dentte shrugged. "Yeah, I know. But… I was just giving you a suggestion."

Alfen stood up, and patted his shoulder.

"Okay, I think if there's a problem, it's better to solve it logically. Not with things like that."

'Besides, that's impossible… ugh… just admit it if you want to join in and make me your experiment, I know that kind of person you are…'

After that conversation, he ordered his food, stood in line white the others, and went to the cashier.

He tapped the edge of the counter to get attention, the said,

"One Volvic, cold soft drink, two ham and-cheese sandwiches."

A female cashier stood in front of him. "The total is £2.80, yes."

Alfen opened his wallet, took out a banknote with a picture of I Newton's and two silver coins with a picture of Britannia, placed them on thecashier's desk, them took the change from the cashier who didn't forget say thank you.

The white-haired,young man whit clear blue eyes then returned to the table where he and his friend were sitting.

---

Outside, the air greeted us with a sweltering heat. The sun's rays fell slantingly, casting shadows across the campus grounds. Other students hurried out; some headed for the garden, some chatting casually, some yawning tiredly and complaining.

Alfen walked beside Dentte. His expression remained impassive, but his mind was still preoccupied with the previous conversation.

"Alf, seriously, you need to learn to relax. Life isn't just about assignments, notes, and revisions. Sometimes we need to have fun. How about we try that next week…" Dentte coaxed with his a sly smile.

Alfen sighed softly.

"Dentte, don't forget to come with me to the city library tomorrow. I plan to pick up some books on Early History Era for my research."

The Early History era was a time when technology began to develop, monarchical leadership was strengthened, and political stability emerged under the reign of King Henry VII.

"Eh… okay," Dentte chuckled, but didn't agree easily—oh no, that wasn't Dentte's style.

"Besides, you were the one who treated me on purpose, check— come on you...."

"It's clear you have a motive, you wrinkled radish basterd, you want to take advantage of me, heh..."

"Anywey, you have to go along, you won't gibe up, you could lose anyway."

"Count it, who asked you to play a trick on me yesterday, this is called a revenge strategy."

Alfen, not wanting to prolong the conversation, changed the topic and asked,

"Professor Regard asked you to research that era laa—"

Use…!!!

His words trailed off. Alfen fell forward, his folders and papers flying in the wind. It was all because his own shoelace was untied—and he had stepped on it.

Silence. His palms ached. His jaw clenched.

"…Damn," he muttered coldly.

Several students turned their heand. Some tried to hold back smiles, others chuckled.

Dentte quickly crouched down to help her friend pick up the papers. Her shoulders ware shaking violently, her face flushed, and her eyes slightly wetery. It was clear she was struggling to hold back laughter.

"Dentte," Alfen's voice was low and even. "Don't laugh. I swear you'll regret it if you laugh"

"Khhh—ehem… for Neptune's sake… I'm not laughing, seriously," Dentte covered her mouth, but the sound leaked out like a fake cough.

Alfen stood up, straightened his wrinkled trousers, and picked up his folder. His expression remained inpassive. His steps were quick, as if trying to swallow the embarrassing moment.

All the was home, only one word escaped his lips, soft but firm:

"Unlucky."

But in his heart, there were other words that echoed:

"Haisss… so unlucky—there's no way I'd be cursed like that…«
