Chapter 30: A Crying Mateo

Mateo's face twisted when he heard me laugh. His eyes narrowed and his attention was on me once more.

"What do you mean?" he demanded, his brow furrowed. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried that brittle edge I'd come to recognize too well. "Explain, Isa. Because I don't understand."

I shook my head slowly, searching his face, trying to match it with the boy I used to know. But the more I looked, the more I realized how foreign he felt to me now.

And the words slipped out before I could stop them.

"I'm not surprised you don't understand." My voice wavered, but I didn't look away. "I don't even know who you are anymore, Mateo. This—this isn't the boy I fell for. Back then, I was head over heels. But now…" My throat tightened. "Now you're someone else entirely."

"What do you mean by that?" He asked me with a difficult smile on his face.

No matter how hard he tried to keep the smile on his face it kept on falling.
