Chapter 31: The Interruption
The grip on my wrist had tightened so painfully I thought Mateo might snap the bones. His tears, hot and angry, fell too close to my face, and for a heartbeat, fear along with confusion over came me. I had no idea if Alexander and his crew was nearby. If any of them could lend a helping hand right now cause I could not understand what was going on.
Then, with a sudden wrench from someone, Mateo's hand was pried from mine.
I stumbled backward, nearly colliding with the broad chest of the figure who'd appeared behind me. My lungs caught in my throat as Mateo spun around with a guttural growl.
"Arthur?" My voice cracked on the name.
Arthur stood there in his usual composed stance, shoulders relaxed, copper hair catching the weak strip of hallway light. If he was rattled by Mateo's fury, he didn't show it. His expression was calm, detached even, but his eyes were steady.
"What are you doing here?" Mateo spat, his voice sharp enough to cut.
