Chapter 5 - Shadows in Motion

The harbor lay quiet under the dim evening sky. The waves moved gently against the wooden planks, but the group was restless. The Three Hooded Figures had vanished into the shadows, leaving only destruction behind. Elias stood tall, his eyes scanning the distant city, calm but focused. The fight was over for now, but their secret was at risk.

"I have a plan," Elias said, his voice firm. "We are not running, and we are not facing the world. We need to bring my friend here. He knows how to help us stay hidden. Without him, the world will discover who we really are."

Mira's eyes widened. "Where is he? How will we find him?"

Elias turned to the young man in their group who had the gift of teleportation. "Veyra, take me to him," Elias said. "We must move quickly. Time is short. We cannot risk being seen while we wait."

Veyra nodded and focused. The air around them wavered and bent like water. In an instant, the group vanished from the harbor and appeared in a narrow street in a distant town. Smoke from small kitchens mingled with the smell of fried bread and herbs. People moved slowly, chatting or carrying baskets, unaware of the hidden powers among them.

Elias scanned the street. He had been here before, but now he could see danger as well as opportunity. At the corner, a small shop stood with its doors open. The shelves were stacked with jars and bread, a small coin box glinting in the evening sun. A young thief, Riven, slipped inside, moving faster than any ordinary man. He grabbed the coins and bolted, running into the street.

"Stop!" the shopkeeper shouted, chasing him.

Riven turned in seconds, snapping his fingers. Every human around forgot the chase, the theft, everything. The shopkeeper froze, confusion washing over him. Slowly, he walked back into his shop, unaware of what had just happened.

Elias stepped out of the shadows. His eyes were calm but sharp. "Riven, I told you not to use your power to steal from people," he said.

Riven froze, clutching the coins. "I need it," he said. "I have nothing. I need money to live."

Elias's gaze softened slightly, understanding the hunger and struggle behind the words. "Your power is not meant for this. It is meant to protect and serve, to help others and keep us hidden. Now, you will have work, and you will be paid. But first, return the money."

Riven hesitated but nodded. Slowly, he returned the coins to the shopkeeper. The man looked at him with blank eyes, unaware of what had happened. Elias nodded, satisfied. "Now follow me. Your first task is learning control. This is important. Everything we do must remain unseen."

Veyra joined them, and the group disappeared from the town. In moments, they reappeared back at the harbor. The waves lapped quietly against the docks, reflecting the last rays of the sun.

Mira stepped forward, curiosity in her eyes. "Why steal from small shops? Why not go after the rich ones?"

Riven chuckled. "Big shops and rich people have eyes everywhere. Cameras, guards, machines that record. I can make people forget, but I cannot erase what machines see. That is why I take small risks. Small shops are easier."

Elias looked out over the water. "The world has already seen part of our powers. If we are not careful, everything we've protected will be exposed. That is why secrecy is our first priority."

Mira frowned. "But the Three Hooded Figures are still out there. They could follow us."

Elias shook his head. "They might be watching, but they cannot know where we will meet . Our shadows will protect us. Until we reunite, we move carefully. No one must see more than they should."

Riven shifted slightly. "And what happens after that?"

Elias's eyes glinted with determination. "We will ensure our safety first. Then Kael and his team will handle the coming threat. Our focus is secrecy."

At that moment, Mira glanced at Elias. "So Kael's plan to stop what is coming is separate?"

Elias nodded. "Yes. Kael is preparing a team to face what is coming. That is his responsibility. Mine is to keep us hidden until everything is ready. Two different paths, one purpose."

The harbor was calm now, but Elias could sense the tension in the air. The city had already seen part of their powers. If they stayed too long, curious eyes would follow them. Veyra readied herself.

"Are you ready?" Elias asked Riven.

The young thief nodded. "I am ready. I will follow your lead."

Elias turned to Mira. "We must wait no longer. The longer we delay, the closer someone might be to discovering our identities. Shadows will protect us, but only if we stay careful."

He focused on the location in his mind, imagining the alley where his friend had been hiding. The air bent, shimmering like heat waves over the sunlit docks. In a blink, they were gone. Before that, Riven snapped again, ensuring no human around remembered them. Kael separated from the group to prepare his team to stop the coming danger.

They appeared in a quiet alley far from the main streets, the air smelling faintly of herbs and wood smoke. Elias's eyes scanned the area, searching. Somewhere nearby, his friend was waiting. But he also felt the faintest stirrings in the shadows. The Three Hooded Figures were still out there, patient, watching, waiting for a mistake.

Riven looked around nervously. "What if they find us?"

Elias shook his head. "If we are careful, they will not. That is why we move as one. Our friend will help us stay hidden, but until he is here, every step must be cautious."

Mira looked at Elias. "And Kael?"

"He is readying his team to face what is coming. That is not our concern now. Our concern is the shadows, keeping our identities hidden. Everything else will follow later."

The harbor, the distant city, and the soft waves were behind them. All that mattered now was the alley, the friend, and the safety of their identities. Elias's eyes burned with focus. The plan was in motion. Shadows would protect them, and soon, with his friend at the harbor, they would regain control over what the world had already glimpsed.

Riven, though still uneasy, stayed close. Elias knew the path ahead would test everyone's patience, skill, and courage, but secrecy was their strongest weapon.
