Chapter 4 - Awakening [End]

Ava Flamesworth moved with grace and elegance, her long red hair swaying behind her.

She stopped in front of the podium, her beautiful blue eyes scrutinizing the Awakening Orb.

Once again, the hall went silent as everyone watched her place her hand on the orb.

Just like the Draka Family, no descendant of the Flamesworth Family had ever awakened their Ability below the Disaster Rank in the history of the family.

And every member of the family had the same Ability.

For the fourth time today, a blinding red light was emitted from the orb.

Another Disaster Rank Ability.

Gasps and claps could be heard from the crowd, but it wasn't like they were expecting otherwise.

She was a direct descendant after all.

"Ava Flamesworth, Beast Summoning, Disaster Rank, Beast Path!"

'Every member of the Flamesworth Family had the ability to summon just one Phoenix, and just like the Draka Family, that would be the protector and companion of its summoner,' Raiven thought.

A small smile formed on Ava's face as she walked to the end of the platform.

Finally, after a few more individuals awakened...

"Raiven Ashland!"

Immediately Raiven's name was called, he instantly felt a pair of eyes on him.

He didn't even need to look. He already knew who it was.

Avin, with folded arms, glared at Raiven.

'You were among those who made my life a living hell,' Avin thought. 'But now... That will change...'

Now that he had awakened a Disaster Rank Ability, he would make sure he made them pay for what they did to him.

Raiven felt those eyes follow him as he walked towards the podium.

He could see some of his 'friends' behind Tim smiling at him.

"Tch," Raiven clicked his tongue and focused on the Awakening Orb. "Time to see what shitty Soul Ability I awakened..."

He placed his hand on the orb and channelled his Soul Energy into the orb.

And then...

For the fifth time today.

It happened.

A blinding red light left the orb, making everyone shield their eyes.

Everyone already knew what this meant.

Raiven's hand trembled, his eyes widened and shaky.

His chest heaved up and down as his breathing became uneven.

He couldn't believe it.

He couldn't.

Wasn't Raiven supposed to awaken a shitty Soul Ability?

So why?

Why did he awaken a Disaster Rank Soul Ability?

While Raiven was standing like a ghost staring at the orb, Klein had already dashed towards him.

He held Raiven's shoulder and began shaking him, telling him how much he was proud to have a student like him.

Raiven wasn't even listening to him and he didn't even realize how much spit he was being covered with right now because of Klein.

He was just too focused on the system screen that was in front of him.

But instead of displaying his stats and stuff about his Soul Ability, it was displaying something else.

[You have inherited the Necromancer's Legacy.]

[Do you accept?]

'Necromancer's Legacy...?'

'What the hell is that?'

Raiven didn't know what the system was talking about, and he didn't know why he awakened a Disaster Rank Ability, but he definitely wasn't complaining.

'If I do not accept the Legacy, who knows if I'll somehow not get the Disaster Rank Ability anymore?' Raiven thought.

'This Disaster Rank Ability will make it easier for me to avoid getting killed by Avin, and above all, it'll help me survive Armageddon. I can't risk losing it.'

For this reason, Raiven decided to accept the Necromancer's Legacy even though he didn't really know what it was.

Though, there was another reason he decided to accept it.

Curiosity.

'I want to know what it is... What it means. I want to know what will happen if I accept it.'

Unable to hold his curiosity, Raiven finally pressed the 'yes' button mentally.

[You have successfully inherited the Necromancer's Legacy!]

But apart from the system message, nothing else happened.

Raiven blinked. 'Huh? That's all?'

Though, unknowingly to Raiven, as soon as he accepted the Necromancer's Legacy, something happened.

Avin, who was staring at Raiven, suddenly raised a brow as the system screen appeared in front of him.

[The Quest has been given!]

[You have just one main quest]

'Huh?'

Avin raised a brow.

His eyes trailed downwards, and there, he saw the quest written boldly in gold.

[Kill the Necromancer.]

[Reward: The Truth]

In that same moment...

"Raiven Ashland, Beast Summoning, Disaster Rank, Beast Path!"

The crowd cheered.

Five Disaster Rank Soul Abilities in one Academy? It was unbelievable.

Avin's eyes squinted into pinpricks as he stared at the system screen.

'Kill the Necromancer...?'

He stared at the reward.

'The truth...'

Just like Raiven, a single feeling took over Avin.

Curiosity!

'The truth? What truth is the system talking about? I want to know this truth...'

Meanwhile, Raiven had finally removed his hand from the Awakening Orb.

It was now he realized the amount of spit that had landed on him just from how fast Klein was talking.

The man was just overjoyed.

Raiven walked away from the podium.

'Even though I've accepted the Legacy, I don't feel any change.'

He made a mental note to check the system later.

He knew that if he checked it now, he would definitely space out; something he always did.

'Also, my Soul Ability was displayed as Beast Summoning,' Raiven thought, 'which means it's definitely tied to this Necromancer's Legacy.'

He knew that Necromancy had to do with Beasts.

'If I had rejected the Legacy, maybe I would've lost the Ability...'

That would have been a shame.

**********

Tension.

Pressure.

Heated.

Raiven didn't know what else he could use to describe the current situation.

He was in a room, an office to be precise.

The scent of books filled the air, courtesy of the heaps of books situated on the table in front of him and on the different shelves in the office.

Avin and Ava sat on the two chairs at the right.

Yenna and Muriel sat on the two chairs at the left.

And for some reason...

'I'm seated in the middle...!!'
