Mai Sakurajima knew—Draconis's first plan could probably fix her predicament. But if they went through with it, he'd be the only one left who could see her, the only one able to help. That meant Draconis would be dragged straight into her mess.
And when it came to the media and entertainment reporters—those vultures never missed a chance to invade someone's privacy for a juicy story. If Draconis got caught up in that circus, there'd be hell to pay.
Even now, facing her own crisis, Mai didn't want anyone else getting hurt because of her.
So, with Mai vetoing his first scheme, Draconis simply nodded and switched to option two.
"Alright, first step: how do we track down where this all started?" He tapped his chin, thinking aloud. "Could it be your agency?"
Since the problem seemed tied to Mai's own wishes, her agency was a logical place to start.
But Mai shook her head, voice gentle but firm. "No. Not the agency."
Her certainty caught Draconis off guard. "Why?"
"No special reason. I just know it isn't." She hesitated, leaving it at that.
Draconis studied her, sensing there was something she wasn't ready to share. He let it go, offering an easy smile.
"Okay, scratch the agency. So—where were you when you first noticed no one could see you?"
Mai answered immediately. "The aquarium. I was there on a whim, just for fun."
"…Wait. You mean that aquarium? One of the famous 'three sacred date spots'?"
She nodded.
Draconis cocked his head. "…You went alone?"
He didn't spell it out, but the look in his eyes said enough. Mai caught the implication instantly and, without missing a beat, pressed her foot down on his.
"Yep. Just me. Is there a problem with visiting an aquarium solo?"
"…No problem. Mai—your foot."
He glanced down at her leg, encased in sleek black stockings.
Mai shot him a glare. "Add 'classmate' when you say my name."
"…Mai Sakurajima, classmate—your foot."
Instead of moving, she pressed down harder, her expression cool and unbothered. "What about my foot?"
Draconis went deadpan. "Please, trample me more mercilessly, my queen."
Mai blinked. "…??"
Are devils always this playful?
"So, do you think that's the place we need to check?" She shifted back to business, face composed.
"Honestly, odds are low," Draconis admitted.
"Guessing works too?" Mai asked, matching his calm.
Draconis nodded. "Fair enough. Even if the odds are bad, we should check every possibility."
Mai glanced at the clock. It was getting late—no time left today.
She turned to Draconis. "Tomorrow's Saturday. Are you free?"
His cool demeanor vanished, replaced by wide-eyed excitement. "Wait, am I dreaming? Is this my first ever date invite from a girl?"
Mai just stared. His acting was so clumsy, it was almost endearing.
"Your acting's terrible," she said flatly.
"…Guess I shouldn't show off in front of a pro." Draconis dropped the act, sheepish.
Compared to Mai, he was hopeless. No contest.
"Just so you know, you'll be going in alone. I'll wait outside." Mai's smile turned mischievous.
Draconis's head tilted, voice stretching out in mock protest. "…Eh?"
Seeing his flustered reaction, Mai finally smiled for real. "Just kidding."
Draconis rolled his eyes. "So this is payback for teasing you earlier? Cruel, Mai Sakurajima."
"Right back at you."
With smiles exchanged, they set their meeting spot and Draconis stood to leave.
"I'll be there on time tomorrow."
Mai watched him, curiosity sparking. "Are you going to teleport home with that paper again?"
"Curious? Watch closely."
Draconis stood in the living room, took a deep breath, bent his knees, and—just as Mai expected him to leap and vanish—he hopped in place, then strode straight out the door.
Mai stared after him. "…??"
She blinked, then quietly closed the door behind his disappearing figure.
Is this guy for real…?
…
On the way home, Draconis felt a headache coming on.
Finally summoned, and the job was already a nightmare.
Life's supposed to get easier when you become a devil, isn't it? So why did he still get stuck with all the hard stuff?
Whatever. A few bumps in the road were normal. He needed to keep his head straight.
Maybe if he thought through the details, he'd come up with something.
He replayed Mai's words in his mind as he walked, lost in thought—until a figure suddenly rushed around the corner and collided with him.
"Ah—"
The person stumbled back, lost balance, and landed on the ground with a soft cry.
A girl's voice.
Draconis snapped out of his daze and offered a hand. "Sorry about that."
"Oh, no, I should apologize!" The girl quickly grabbed his hand and stood.
Only then did Draconis notice her unusual clothes.
Was that… a nun's habit?
