The girl in front of him was unmistakably dressed as a nun, though her habit was the understated, everyday kind. It wasn't flashy—Draconis only recognized it because of the subtle religious embroidery woven into the fabric.
A pristine white veil framed her golden hair, which shimmered beneath the morning light. Her eyes were clear, almost luminous, and her features so delicate they looked sculpted by a patient god. Just standing near her, Draconis felt a wave of sanctity roll over him.
Pure—almost painfully so.
He caught sight of the silver cross hanging at her throat and felt a prickle of instinctive caution.
Church. Of course.
His body tensed. He was a devil now, and this girl was Church. Enemy territory?
She stood up, brushing off her skirt, and Draconis quietly edged back, keeping a polite distance.
"Um…" The girl hesitated, cheeks tinged with embarrassment. "I think I'm lost… Could you help me, please?"
…Did I hear that right? You sure you want a devil to show you around?
How much could you get for a church nun on the black market, anyway?
Quick answers only, folks. This is urgent.
"First time in Kuoh?" Draconis kept his voice gentle.
She nodded. "Yes, I'm newly assigned to the church here… I'm not familiar with the city at all. I'm sorry for troubling you. May the Lord bless this kind gentleman before me."
She bowed, formal and sincere.
Even in just a few words, Draconis saw it—innocence, devotion, a kind of radiant honesty.
No way she was faking that.
Maybe not every angel or fallen angel was a hypocrite, after all.
Still, he was a devil. Best to keep his distance and send her on her way.
"I know where the church is. I'll walk you there," he said, casual.
Her whole face lit up. "Thank you so much!"
Her eyes curved into bright crescents as she smiled.
The church was conveniently in the same direction as Draconis's apartment. They walked together for a while, and soon he was almost home.
He pointed down the street. "See that intersection? The church is just past it—stay on the main road and you'll find it. I'll leave you here."
"Thank you! To meet someone so kind the moment I arrive in Kuoh—I'm truly blessed. Thank you, Lord."
…Kind?
Try 'devious' or 'shameless' next time.
Draconis just nodded, keeping his thoughts to himself. "Don't mention it. Goodbye."
"Goodbye!" She paused, then added quickly, "Oh, I'm Asia Argento. Just call me Asia. I don't know your name yet."
"…Draconis Yi."
"Draconis-san… I'll remember. I'll pray sincerely for you before the Lord."
Asia's gentle smile and words nearly made Draconis choke.
Pray for a devil?
Well, thanks for nothing…
"…Thanks, Asia."
He watched her go, her golden hair catching the sunlight.
A new nun in town, huh.
Shouldn't be any trouble. She didn't seem like the type to stir things up.
Still, just to be safe, he'd mention her to Rias next chance he got.
Turning away, Draconis headed for home.
He'd need a good night's sleep—tomorrow was bound to be chaos.
…
The next morning.
Draconis snapped awake—thanks, alarm clock. Thirty minutes later, he finally conquered his laziness and rolled out of bed.
"What do you even wear for a date?"
Whatever.
Not like it's a real date.
He scanned his closet and grabbed a denim jacket at random.
One look in the mirror and the last traces of sleep vanished—damn, he actually looked good.
He hopped on his bike and pedaled to the meeting spot, arriving right on time. Mai was already waiting.
He locked up his bike and approached. "Been here long?"
"Just got here," Mai replied.
"Just for the record, I'm not late," Draconis said, cool as ever.
Mai's expression was neutral, but Draconis caught a hint of something in her tone—a quiet refusal to be compared to anyone else.
"You think I'm one of those girls who expects guys to show up first? I'm not that petty."
Draconis couldn't help but smile. "If every girl was as reasonable as you, Mai, dating would be a lot simpler."
"Save the sweet talk for your dreams."
He chuckled. "Humans are weird. What they say when they're awake isn't always the truth—dream talk, that's the real stuff."
Mai just stared, unable to argue.
"Let's go. The aquarium should be open by now."
She started walking, and Draconis fell in behind, keeping a half-step's distance.
They walked in silence for a while.
Draconis, trailing beside her, took in her profile. Today, Mai wore a simple white blouse with pleated trim, paired with a plaid skirt. Her long legs were wrapped in black stockings—eye-catching, even with the skirt's modest knee-length.
She looked mature, her aura quietly magnetic.
…But, come on, that skirt went all the way to her knees.
Damn.
Just then, Mai glanced over, catching Draconis's wandering gaze.
"…What's with that look?"
She was on guard. Draconis wondered if girls just came with built-in radar for this stuff.
Caught red-handed, he didn't even try to hide it.
"Mai-san, isn't a date supposed to involve short skirts and bare legs?"
"Huh?"
Mai's fists tightened. "I'm going to hit you, you know!"
"It's rare for someone to go on a date with me. I thought I'd get to see something." Draconis put on his best disappointed face.
"…I told you to stop showing off your terrible acting."
"What if I'm actually disappointed?"
"Is it really that big a deal?"
"Super disappointed," Draconis said, utterly serious.
Mai's lips twitched. She turned away, muttering to herself in a voice she thought he couldn't hear:
"Jeez… I did put serious thought into this outfit…"
Huh?
She thought he hadn't heard, but he caught every word. He smiled, just a little.
"But, you know, you look absolutely adorable today."
Mai: "…!"
