Chapter 197 - 《DXD: Transfer Student》Chapter 196: Extermination Assignment

"DXD: Transfer Student"Chapter 196: Extermination Assignment

Classes passed without incident—a typical day for Draconis Yi, academic ace. School was just a box to tick off, nothing more.

After the final bell, everyone gathered in the clubroom as usual. Most of the team busied themselves prepping for contract requests, but Draconis Yi found himself at loose ends.

He had no contracts lined up. Mai Sakurajima and Toyohama Nodoka's issues were resolved, so they wouldn't be calling on him anytime soon. The Nakano quintuplets hadn't contacted him in days; maybe their story with him had simply run its course.

He watched Asia, Akeno, and the others vanish one by one through magic circles, off to fulfill their assignments. Left behind, Draconis Yi sighed and summoned his Sigil of Suppression.

The silver seal zipped around him, flapping its tiny wings like a hummingbird—clearly in high spirits.

He raised his hand, and the Sigil landed obediently on his palm.

"Come on, little guy. Can't you be a bit more useful?" he muttered.

He stretched the seal between his fingers; it elongated comically, then snapped back like a rubber band.

Draconis Yi could only shake his head. As a combat familiar, the Sigil was a powerhouse—the Elemental Spirit King, after all. But when it came to distributing flyers, its quirks drove him nuts.

It only ever targeted beautiful women, which meant his pool of potential clients shrank dramatically. Most people seeking contracts were men, after all—and their wishes tended to be simpler.

Just look at Koneko: her contracts were mostly playing video games with clients. Draconis Yi couldn't help but envy her sometimes. If only he could earn his keep just by gaming…

"Draconis Yi, no contracts today?" Rias asked, gliding over with a teasing smile.

"Thanks for rubbing it in," he grumbled, flopping onto the sofa and waving his Sigil off to play with Rias's familiar.

Rias laughed. "Want to come check out the lab with me? The professor just handed me a commission."

He groaned. "Archaeology? I'm totally out of my depth there."

Rias's contract work never failed to surprise him—she really was something else.

"So what's your plan, then?" Rias leaned over the back of the sofa, draped her arms around his neck, and planted a sweet kiss on his cheek.

"I guess I'll have to hit the streets myself. Time to distribute flyers the old-fashioned way."

He hadn't done it himself since getting his familiar, but desperate times called for a personal touch.

Rias chuckled. "Better give it your all. It'd be hilarious if you lost to your own familiar!"

"Not a chance," Draconis Yi shot back, eyeing the Sigil. No way he'd lose to this pervy Elemental Spirit.

The Sigil buzzed around indignantly, as if protesting.

So that day, Draconis Yi and the Sigil teamed up, blitzing the city with flyers.

The next day? Still nothing.

He sat on the sofa, silent and brooding. Why was business so dead?

Akeno and the others watched him, torn between amusement and sympathy.

Asia piped up quietly, "If you want, I can give you one of my contracts."

He laughed. "No need, Asia. I've got two faith-based clients—missing a day or two won't hurt."

Asia was always thoughtful. Draconis Yi hugged her, planting a quick kiss on her cheek, which sent her blushing.

Just then, Rias swept into the room, clapping her hands to get everyone's attention.

"Put today's contracts on hold. We've got a new assignment—a Stray Devil kidnapped an official's son and fled into my territory. We're needed for a takedown."

Draconis Yi raised an eyebrow. "Stray Devil? That's rare."

Akeno smiled. "Not really. Most of them get handled by subordinates—we rarely need to step in ourselves."

"How strong is this one?"

"Pretty tough—close to High-Class Devil level. That's why she's evaded capture for so long," Rias replied. "She's no match for us, but let's all go. Call it a team field trip."

Draconis Yi nodded. He couldn't ignore a threat of that level. Maybe it couldn't touch him, but Asia, Koneko, and the others could be at risk. He'd go to keep them safe.

"Let's roll. I've got nothing better to do," he said with a wry smile. If contracts wouldn't come to him, he'd take out his frustrations on this Stray Devil.

Six of them stepped into the magic circle and emerged atop a skyscraper.

"She's in there?" Draconis Yi asked, peering across at the adjacent building. He could sense a crowd of humans inside—and a foul, flickering magical presence.

Definitely a Stray Devil. Only those consumed by lust and corruption gave off a stench that revolting.

"That's her. Let's move," Rias said, leading the way. With a wave of her hand, demonic flames melted the glass, and the team slipped inside.

Suddenly, alarms blared. Footsteps thundered, and a squad of heavily armed humans appeared at the end of the corridor, blocking their path.

Rias frowned. "Blessed silver bullets…"

Draconis Yi and the others felt it too—the guns these humans carried were loaded with anti-devil rounds, dangerous even to mid-level devils.

"President, looks like someone's providing backup," Xenovia said quietly, brow furrowed. The presence of blessed silver bullets meant church agents had illegally supplied weapons to humans.

And these humans weren't ordinary—they'd all received holy blessings.

Wasn't this supposed to be a Stray Devil hunt? Why were so many humans defending the place?

Draconis Yi's gaze hardened. "Seems this is more complicated than we thought. These people are working with the Stray Devil."

Rias's eyes flashed with anger. "No wonder she's lasted so long—she's got human allies. Whoever's behind them has connections to both devils and the church."

Draconis Yi felt a flicker of excitement. Things had just gotten interesting.

Anyone able to mobilize this kind of firepower among humans was a serious player…
