"DXD: Transfer Student"Chapter 197: A Second Encounter with the Stray Devil

A dozen rifles snapped up, barrels trained on Draconis Yi's crew. These mercenaries didn't flinch—they'd clearly tangled with devils before.

Draconis Yi glanced at Rias. "How do you want to play this?"

"Knock them out," she replied, voice cool.

Rias had seen her share of humans corrupted by devils. It wasn't even surprising anymore. Devils hadn't changed their nature—just their tactics to fit the times. Redemption? Not really in the cards.

Draconis Yi didn't care either. He'd once been human, sure, but any sense of kinship was long gone. If Rias had ordered him to kill these guys, he wouldn't have hesitated. They were pointing guns at him—enemy territory, plain and simple.

He'd grown up an orphan, raised beneath cold stares and sharper words. He'd seen the worst of human nature, and it was a minor miracle he hadn't turned out antisocial. Expecting him to feel loyalty to humanity was a joke.

At least as a devil, he finally felt… happy. He had people he could be real with—people he wanted to talk to, not just pretend for the sake of empty social rituals. Back at Kuoh Academy, the rumor mill claimed he'd grown "aloof" since joining the club.

Truth was, he'd always been faking it. Socializing used to be a chore. Now, he didn't bother pretending—and if that made him seem cold, so be it. He was happier this way. Not caring what others thought was bliss.

Rias, Mai Sakurajima, the Nakano quintuplets—these were people he could actually connect with. He enjoyed bantering with them, even flirting a bit. That was fun. The rest? Not worth his time.

So when the mercenaries blocked his path, Draconis Yi didn't even blink. In a heartbeat, they crumpled to the floor—out cold, but alive. He'd held back; they'd wake up in a day.

Rias smiled, stepping over the bodies and leading the way deeper inside.

Ahead, a heavy iron door barred their path. Xenovia strode forward and kicked it—sending several tons of steel flying. Asia scrambled to cover Xenovia's skirt, cheeks pink.

Inside, Rias scanned the room and spotted a clutch of balding middle-aged men huddled in the corner. She approached, her smile all business.

"Good evening, gentlemen. I'm Rias Gremory. I'll need your cooperation."

"You—you're a devil, aren't you? Why invade our building…" The man at the back tried to sound calm, but his eyes betrayed him.

He knew anyone who could stroll past his security wasn't ordinary.

Rias's smile faded, replaced by icy authority. "Since you know about devils, we can skip the introductions. Tell me who's pulling the strings—who's been brokering deals between devils and the church."

"I have no idea what you're talking about. My old butler was a church man, that's all. I've never had any dealings with devils."

He'd regained some composure, words flowing more smoothly now.

Rias radiated power. "You think denial works? You think I can't sense a Stray Devil's signature? Akeno."

"Yes, President."

"They're yours. We'll handle the Stray Devil—she's trying to bolt."

"Understood."

Akeno's smile was sweet, but it carried a dangerous edge. "Ara ara, so many new toys to play with."

Her voice was soft, almost musical—until golden lightning arced from her fingertips. Against her flawless features, she looked both beautiful and wicked, a contradiction that sent chills through the room.

The men's knees nearly buckled. Moments later, screams echoed through the halls, mixed with Akeno's delighted laughter.

Draconis Yi followed Rias and the rest, leaving Akeno to her work. Under her methods, those men would talk soon enough.

Suddenly, Koneko tugged Draconis Yi's sleeve.

"Koneko? Something up?"

She met his gaze, golden eyes serious. "Let us handle the next fight. Could you stay back?"

"That's a near High-Class Devil. If you're sure you can manage, I'll cover you."

He didn't argue. He understood why Koneko and the others wanted to prove themselves.

"We can do it," Koneko said, certain.

Xenovia thumped her chest. "Don't worry, I'm here too."

Draconis Yi smiled. "Then I'm looking forward to seeing what you've got."

He trusted them. The Stray Devil was tough, but not quite High-Class. Koneko and the team had the strength to hold their own.

Rias felt a pang of nostalgia. She used to be the one backing up Draconis Yi. Now the roles had reversed—and honestly, she'd expected it the day she invested ten chess pieces in him. She'd gotten more than her money's worth.

"Could you hold this for me?" Koneko handed him a small bag.

"I've been meaning to ask—what's inside?"

Koneko's lips twitched in a barely-there smile. "Snacks. Cakes. I don't want them crushed in the fight."

Draconis Yi unzipped the bag. Sure enough, a stash of neatly packaged cakes.

Typical nekomata—Koneko loved her snacks, always munching when she had a free moment.

He slung the bag over his shoulder. The enemy's aura was close now. Xenovia stepped up, cleaving the next door with a single sword strike—straight to the point.

A blast of foul-smelling pus shot toward them, instantly vaporized by Xenovia's magic.

"Ugh. Disgusting," she muttered, glaring at the woman inside.

The Stray Devil—a woman now warped and grotesque—let out a shrill, grating laugh.

"Heh… Kekekeke~ So many pretty faces. I'll rip them apart, one by one… Gahahaha…"

Koneko scowled at the voice and charged forward without hesitation.
