"DXD: Transfer Student"Chapter 198: The True Mastermind
Koneko didn't hesitate. She charged in, fist cocked, and let loose.
The impact was brutal—her Rook-enhanced punch cracked the air, nearly sonic. The Stray Devil, a woman named Sylvia, never saw it coming. She flew backward, slammed into the wall, and stuck there with a bone-jarring thud.
Only now did Draconis Yi and the others get a good look at her. Sylvia's face was carved with deep, purple-black lines—life marks.
Rias's eyes went cold. "Those are life marks, aren't they? Sylvia, I never thought you'd fall this far."
A life mark meant a devil had drained every last drop of someone's life energy. Each mark lasted three days, each one a death sentence. Sylvia's face bore twelve.
Twelve lives lost—in just three days.
Sylvia, wild-eyed and twitching, shrieked, "You bitch! How dare you ruin my beautiful face…!"
She was high on stolen life force, her mind half gone. Absorbing life energy brought a rush, a twisted euphoria—devils who fell into this addiction became monsters, inside and out.
Sure, it boosted power at first, but the gains were tiny. The deeper you sank, the more lives you needed for a fraction of strength. Eventually, even slaughtering hundreds wouldn't make you stronger. That's why devil society banned the practice—only Stray Devils dared cross that line.
Koneko didn't flinch. She dove back in, fists flying. Sylvia met her head-on, and the fight tore through the building—walls buckled, floors shook, the place was coming apart.
Sylvia was stronger, juiced up on stolen life. Koneko started to falter, but Xenovia stepped in, sword flashing. Her power rivaled any High-Class Devil now, and her timing turned the tide.
Asia worked support from a safe distance. Draconis Yi and Rias watched for a bit, then relaxed. This was under control.
Draconis Yi found a spot, sat down, and eyed the snack bag Koneko had handed him. He popped it open, fished out a cake, and ate slowly, savoring the chaos like a spectator at a show.
Rias caught him mid-bite, half amused, half exasperated.
"…Are you seriously eating Koneko's snacks right now?"
Draconis Yi grinned. "What's a good fight without snacks? It's like watching a movie."
Rias could only shake her head. Anyone walking in would think he was at a cinema, not a battle zone.
Koneko and Xenovia kept up the assault, pounding Sylvia without mercy. The top floor finally gave way, collapsing in a roar of dust and debris.
Draconis Yi raised a shield, blocking the worst of it, and kept munching. Watching cute girls fight was way better than any film.
As the last of the dust settled, Sylvia—now a hulking, three-meter monster—crashed to the ground, sparks flying as she skidded to a stop at Draconis Yi's feet.
The battle was over. Three floors shaved off the building, and the Stray Devil lay defeated, staring up at Draconis Yi, who looked for all the world like he was on a picnic.
"…My cakes," Koneko muttered, eyeing the half-empty bag.
Draconis Yi blinked, suddenly sheepish. "Sorry. Got caught up in the action. You guys were putting on a hell of a show."
He'd nearly finished the snacks, lost in the spectacle. If only he'd had a soda…
Akeno floated over, smiling, having finished her own work.
"Get anything useful?" Rias asked.
Akeno nodded. "The mastermind is the Leon faction."
Rias's eyes widened. "Leon? Weren't they Old Satan loyalists?"
"Exactly. The ones who never gave up. They manipulated these humans—and apparently have ties to the Norse gods."
Draconis Yi tilted his head. "So what's their connection to this Stray Devil?"
Akeno explained, "Sylvia kidnapped the son of a powerful human official. The plan was to force him into starting a war between two nations. So these mercenaries? Traitors, basically."
She smiled. "I already rescued the boy."
"So they're trying to undermine the three-way peace agreement, and stir up trouble from the human side too," Draconis Yi mused, glancing at the battered Stray Devil. "All that scheming for nothing."
Rias elaborated, "The Old Satan faction joined the Khaos Brigade. Latest intel says the Brigade's been in talks with Loki, the Norse trickster. Odin's response was to pit the Norse gods against the Brigade. So Loki's the real puppet master here."
"Just like his last stunt, targeting young devils. This is probably another of Loki's little games," Rias sighed, worry in her voice. "Who knows what he's really after…"
Akeno added, "I've identified all the human officials who were colluding with the Old Satan faction. What should we do?"
"Send the intel to the human authorities," Rias said. "We never interfere in human politics. Let them clean up their own mess."
Akeno nodded. "Understood."
