After realizing that this world was filled with detectives and phantom thieves, Emiya didn't think much of it.
It had little to do with him.
Whether it was Lupin the Third, the Cat's Eye sisters, or the elusive Phantom Thief, he had no intention of recruiting any of them.
Lupin only worked for himself.
The Cat's Eye sisters only stole their father's art.
As for the Phantom Thief, that guy was too slippery. No one even knew where he was.
Compared to Kaito Kid, Emiya actually felt this Phantom Thief fit the title better.
After all, when he appeared before Kindaichi, he usually wore someone else's face.
As for Kaito Kid-
Well, that was probably because he was a protagonist.
If a protagonist kept using other people's faces, it would be hard for readers to connect with him.
While Emiya was absorbed in his research, the door suddenly opened.
"Professor, Professor, are you home?"
Emiya heard the voice and looked up.
A familiar figure stood there.
Edogawa Conan.
Conan also saw Emiya sitting on the sofa with a laptop and froze.
"You-why are you here?"
Professor Agasa stood up in surprise.
"Huh? Conan, do you know Emiya-san?"
"Professor, why is he at your house?"
"Because he's my boss now," Professor Agasa replied casually.
Conan was stunned.
"Boss? Professor, he's a thief."
"A thief?" Emiya smiled faintly.
"So you've already solved the idol case and figured out the truth."
Conan nodded.
"That's right. As you said, that guy committed suicide. But that doesn't explain why you were there. The only reasonable explanation is that you're a thief who specializes in breaking into Yoko Okino's house."
"So that's how you see me," Emiya said lightly.
Professor Agasa found it amusing.
"Conan, what are you saying? My boss can't be a thief. He's not short on money at all."
Conan froze.
"...That's true."
"I'm not a thief," Emiya added calmly.
"Then who are you?" Conan asked.
"Aren't you a great detective?" Emiya replied.
"Then guess. If you get it right, I'll give you a reward."
Conan's eyes sharpened instantly.
"You know who I am?"
He instinctively looked at Professor Agasa.
Professor Agasa hurriedly waved his hands.
"Not me. I didn't say anything."
"It really wasn't Professor Agasa," Emiya said, closing his laptop.
"As for how I know your identity, you can guess."
Conan stared at him for a long moment.
"You give me a strange feeling."
"How so?"
"You know me."
"That's right."
"No," Conan shook his head.
"I mean, you know the shrunken me. The moment you saw me, you realized who I was. Then you recognized Uncle Kogoro and Ran."
"And?"
"It's like you were seeing familiar characters," Conan continued slowly,
"and then recognizing the others. Like we were part of a story."
Emiya clapped his hands lightly.
"As expected of a great detective. Spot on."
He smiled.
"I didn't expect you to notice so many flaws."
But Conan didn't look excited.
He looked uncomfortable.
That thought had been circling in his mind for a while. He had tried to deny it.
Now, seeing Emiya's reaction, it felt unavoidable.
"So," Conan said quietly, "I'm really just a character in a book?"
"To be precise," Emiya replied, "a manga."
"That doesn't really make it better."
"The manga is called Detective Conan."
"...So I'm the protagonist?"
He felt like he should be happy.
But he wasn't.
Not even a little.
Professor Agasa asked curiously, "What about me?"
"You're a very important supporting character," Emiya said.
"A genius inventor who provides all kinds of gadgets."
Professor Agasa nodded in satisfaction.
"That does sound like me."
"Professor," Conan said helplessly, "that's not something to be happy about."
"Why not?"
"Because everything we do is designed by someone else," Conan said.
"Even the cases I solve."
That was what bothered him the most.
He was just a tool in a manga artist's hands.
Professor Agasa asked calmly, "Then do you think the fact that you know you're a protagonist is also something designed by that person?"
Conan fell silent.
Emiya spoke again.
"If you want, I can take you to the real world and let you meet the manga artist."
"You can do that?" Conan was shocked.
"Of course."
"I can really meet them?" Conan hesitated.
"That'll be your reward."
But the moment Emiya said "reward," Conan calmed down.
"Never mind."
"Why not?"
"If a kid claiming to be the protagonist suddenly shows up," Conan said flatly,
"I'll just be treated as an obsessed fan. No one would believe me. That reward would be wasted."
Emiya nodded.
"You're very calm."
"It's the most rational choice."
"So what reward do you want?" Emiya asked.
"I want to trade it for a few questions," Conan said carefully.
"Is that okay?"
"Sure."
"Then tell me-why did I become a child?"
"You already know," Emiya said.
"You took APTX4869. It's meant to kill without a trace, but in rare cases it rejuvenates the body."
He smiled.
"To be honest, if perfected, it could become a rejuvenation drug. A blessing for humanity."
Conan's face twitched.
"...Who invented it?"
"Shiho Miyano. A genius scientist."
"Where is she now?"
"She'll appear in front of you soon."
Conan's eyes widened.
"She knows who I am?"
"Yes."
"She's part of that organization too?"
"The Black Organization? Yes."
"What kind of name is that?" Conan muttered.
"They all use liquor codenames," Emiya said.
"Gin, Vodka, Tequila, Sherry. So we call it the Black Organization."
"What's Shiho Miyano's codename?"
"Sherry."
Conan swallowed.
"What will she do to me?"
"You don't need to worry," Emiya said.
"She doesn't get along with them. She'll betray them, take the drug, turn into a child-and move in here."
"...Here?" Conan stared at Professor Agasa.
Then he understood.
"No wonder you're here. You're watching her too."
Emiya nodded.
"A genius who can invent a rejuvenation drug is worth watching."
Conan couldn't argue with that.
"...She won't be a threat?"
"No. You and Haibara Ai share a common enemy."
Professor Agasa asked, "Haibara Ai?"
"That's Shiho Miyano's alias," Emiya explained.
"She can't use her real name anymore."
"Haibara Ai?" Conan scoffed.
"That name's awful."
"It's still better than Edogawa Conan," Emiya replied dryly.
"Hey! I thought long and hard about that name."
"You were cornered, saw a Ranpo Edogawa book, mixed it with Conan Doyle, and picked it on the spot," Emiya said flatly.
"And you call that thinking hard?"
Conan coughed.
"...Let's talk about Haibara Ai. What kind of person is she?"
Emiya answered calmly.
"She's cautious. Rational. Sharp-minded. Hard to read. She hides her emotions well-and gets annoyed when someone exposes her vulnerabilities."
