When Conan heard that, he instinctively pushed up his glasses.
"It sounds like I don't really get along with people like that."
"No," Emiya said, a faint smile on his face. "You get along very well."
Conan frowned.
"What do you mean?"
He could tell Emiya wasn't speaking casually.
Emiya said, "In the future, after you and Ai Haibara go through a series of hardships, your relationship will advance at an alarming speed. Then the audience reading the manga will split into two factions."
Conan's unease deepened.
"What two factions?"
"'Shin-Ran' to the sky," Emiya said calmly, "and 'Co-Ai' never dies."
The meaning was obvious.
Shin-Ran meant Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mori.
Co-Ai meant Conan and Ai Haibara.
Conan stiffened.
"You can't say things like that," he said quickly. "The only person I'll ever love is Ran."
"You don't need to tell me that," Emiya replied. "Go tell Ran Mori."
Conan scratched his cheek awkwardly.
"I can't exactly help it. I've shrunk, after all."
"That's fine," Emiya said casually. "I already told Ran Mori that you've shrunk."
"Huh?!"
Conan completely lost his composure.
"When did you tell Ran Mori?!"
"The first time we met," Emiya said. "When Ran Mori rushed out of Yoko Okino's room chasing me, I told her. You're welcome. It's what I should've done."
"I didn't thank you!" Conan snapped.
"No wonder Ran's been looking at me strangely these past few days. I even went to ask the Professor about it. So it was you!"
"If I hadn't told her," Emiya said flatly, "how long were you planning to keep bathing with Ran Mori? You're a high school student. Using your child body to take advantage of her is shameless."
Conan was speechless.
Even the Professor looked at him with a complicated expression.
So that's what kind of Conan you are.
Conan panicked immediately.
His face flushed red.
"T-that was an accident! I didn't want things to turn out like that either!"
"Didn't want to?" Emiya replied. "You looked like you were enjoying it."
"...Damn you, mangaka!"
After a long moment, Conan finally calmed down.
"In any case," he said seriously, "I'll explain everything to Ran. No matter what she does to me-beats me up, kills me, dissects me-I'll accept it."
Emiya rolled his eyes.
"Relax. With Ran Mori's personality, you'll just get a few big bumps at most. She won't go too far. That's just how she is."
"I think she might beat me half to death," Conan said bleakly.
Then something suddenly occurred to him.
His gaze sharpened.
"Wait. You know that Ran and I bathed together. Doesn't that mean you've seen Ran's body?"
"What nonsense are you thinking about?" Emiya said sternly. "Detective Conan is a proper shōnen manga. There aren't any scenes like that."
Conan immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
Emiya continued, "That said, I have seen Ran Mori in a swimsuit."
"Go die a hundred times," Conan said darkly.
Emiya waved it off.
"It's just a manga character. Why are you getting so worked up? Besides, it's normal for Ran Mori to wear a swimsuit when she goes swimming."
Conan felt slightly better.
After hesitating for a moment, he asked carefully, "Just to be safe... besides Shin-Ran and Co-Ai, there aren't any other messy female leads, right?"
"No," Emiya said, shaking his head.
"That's a relief," Conan let out a long breath.
Before he could finish exhaling, Emiya added, "But while there are no other female leads, there is a male lead."
"What?!"
"In the eyes of many female readers, Shin-Ran and Co-Ai can both get lost. They only support the 'Kaitou-Shin' faction."
Conan froze.
"...What is the 'Kaitou-Shin' faction?"
"It's you and Kaito Kid."
"Why is Kaito Kid 'Kaitou'-wait," Conan said sharply. "Does Kaito Kid's real name include the word 'Kaitou'?"
"That's right," Emiya nodded.
"Why would a detective and a phantom thief be shipped together?!"
"Because in the future, you two will clash constantly, become frenemies, help each other out, sabotage each other, and overall have great chemistry. The market is huge."
"I'd rather die," Conan said, shaking his head vigorously.
The idea alone made his scalp crawl.
Emiya smiled.
"Alright. I've answered enough of your questions."
"Wait!" Conan suddenly grew anxious.
"I still have a few more things I need to ask."
Emiya thought for a moment, then raised three fingers.
"Fine. I'll answer your last three questions. Choose carefully."
Conan took a deep breath.
"How can I turn back into an adult?"
"Ai Haibara will develop an antidote in the future," Emiya said. "You'll be able to grow up again then."
"However," he added, "there's another method. Drinking baijiu when you have a cold. It'll temporarily restore your body."
"But it only works once. The effect is short, and after that it'll never work again. Don't use it unless you're desperate."
Emiya lowered one finger.
"Next question."
"How many members of the Black Organization have codenames? And who are they?"
"I haven't counted precisely," Emiya said, "but there aren't that many."
"A large portion of them are undercover agents from the FBI, CIA, and other intelligence agencies."
Conan blinked.
"There are that many moles?"
"What's surprising about that?" Emiya replied. "The Organization is basically divided into two types of people."
"Either they're moles, or they're useless."
"The only competent ones are Gin and Vodka-the two who nearly killed you."
Emiya smiled.
"So you're actually pretty lucky. The first time you ran into the Organization, you met the only truly dangerous ones."
Conan fell silent.
Is that supposed to be comforting?
Emiya lowered another finger.
"Last question. Think very carefully."
Conan didn't hesitate.
"Who is the boss of the Black Organization?"
Emiya looked at him with a faint smile.
"Are you sure you want to know?"
Conan's heart skipped.
"What's wrong with that question?"
"I can give you one more chance to change it."
"You don't know who the boss is?"
"I know," Emiya said calmly. "But you might regret knowing."
"Why would I-"
Conan stopped mid-sentence.
A terrible thought surfaced.
"...Could it be that the boss is someone I know?"
Emiya said evenly, "You can still change your question."
Conan shook his head.
"No. I want the answer."
"Tell me. Who is the boss of the Black Organization?"
Emiya sighed.
"Since you insist... I'll tell you."
"The boss of the Organization-the one Gin and Vodka answer to-is..."
"Yusaku Kudo."
"What?!"
Conan felt the world spin.
His legs nearly gave out.
"My... my father?!"
"How could my father possibly be the boss of the Organization?!"
"Isn't that how shōnen manga usually goes?" Emiya said sympathetically. "The protagonist overcomes countless trials, only to discover at the end that his father is the final demon king."
Conan's face turned completely red.
He didn't know whether to argue or scream.
Even the Professor was stunned.
"Is the boss really my little brother... Yusaku?"
"Of course not," Emiya said.
The Professor immediately relaxed.
Conan stared at Emiya.
"...You just said-"
"Yeah, I lied," Emiya said, bursting out laughing.
Remembering Conan's pale expression earlier made it even funnier.
"You-!"
"Relax," Emiya said, waving his hand. "Yusaku Kudo is just a novelist. What could he possibly know about the Organization?"
Conan didn't want to talk to him anymore.
But in the end, curiosity won.
"...Then who is the real boss?"
"Renya Karasuma."
Conan frowned.
"I've never heard that name."
"I've answered your last question," Emiya said. "If you want to know who Renya Karasuma is, investigate it yourself."
"Don't tell me you've forgotten-you're a detective."
Conan straightened.
He wouldn't deny that.
After being provoked like this, his pride flared.
"I understand. I'll investigate Renya Karasuma myself."
"I swear on my honor as a great detective that I'll uncover everything."
"As long as you're happy," Emiya replied.
"Just remember-even if the Organization is full of moles and dead weight, Gin alone is enough to hold it together."
"You've seen what he's like. His reasoning ability is no worse than yours."
"If he discovers you're still alive," Emiya said calmly, "you'll die."
"Ran Mori will die."
"Kogoro Mori will die."
"Everyone connected to you will die."
"So be careful when you investigate."
Conan took a slow, steady breath.
"I will."
Emiya meant it.
Whenever Gin was involved, Conan tended to lose his cool and push himself into danger.
In the original timeline, if not for someone like Vermouth covertly protecting him, Conan would have been killed by Gin long ago.
