Chapter 9 - Cthulhu is giving out candy

After finalizing his skills, Wu Lei said with a look of satisfaction, "How are the skills I assigned you? Now, Liu Xing, you can serve as the most important medic in the Cthulhu team, protected by your teammates. Unfortunately, your size and strength are too low, and your HP and damage are too low. You're basically the type that will die if left alone. However, you now have 50 credits, so basically, at the beginning of the team, you should find a way to get some weapons and equipment to make up for the inherent shortcomings of your character card."

Liu Xing nodded. Wu Lei was absolutely right. The strengths and weaknesses of his character card were equally clear. The advantage was that Liu Xing could serve as an indispensable medic in every Cthulhu team, and he also possessed important skills like Psychoanalysis. Unless in extremely urgent situations, Liu Xing would be protected by his teammates. The disadvantage was that his HP and damage were too low. Generally speaking, a single round of damage from a ghoul could easily kill Liu Xing instantly, which was why Liu Xing chose the Leap skill. Moreover, Liu Xing's attack power was basically non-existent...

So, Liu Xing's character card already determined that he would be a team player, and he began praying that he would find some reliable teammates.

Liu Xing chatted with Wu Lei for a while longer. Of course, Liu Xing naturally asked him questions indirectly, gaining a lot of personal experience from Wu Lei about the Cthulhu game. As a veteran, Wu Lei naturally benefited Liu Xing greatly.

After politely declining Wu Lei's invitation to lunch, Liu Xing returned home, turned on his computer, logged into the Cthulhu game lobby, and completed the skill point allocation on his character card.

After finishing all this, Liu Xing fell into deep thought: how should he spend the next few days so that he could die without regrets...

After thinking about some random things, Liu Xing decided to browse the mall to see what items he had with his 50 points—no, now it was 49 points—to keep himself alive.

The Cthulhu RPG game lobby store looked like any other game store. At the top was a scrolling list of recommended items, and below that were a variety of items and gift packs from Shanhekou.

What delighted Liu Xing was that these gift packs were reasonably affordable, ranging from 10 points to around 200 points. However, after reading the descriptions of these gift packs, Liu Xing decided they should simply be renamed "lucky bags." These gift packs were essentially the most common card pools in mobile games these days, with players only receiving a certain number of items from each pool, and there were no guaranteed rewards.

For example, the gift pack Liu Xing was currently struggling with—the Newbie Gift Pack. This pack offered over fifty items, ranging from Old Seal charms worth 5 points to character cards worth 1,000 points. Liu Xing only needed 20 points to purchase the Newbie Gift Pack, which gave him two random items. Of course, this Newbie Gift Pack could only be purchased once.

So, logically speaking, the minimum return from this Beginner's Gift Pack is two Old Seal trinkets worth a total of 10 points, resulting in a loss of 10 points. However, according to the Beginner's Gift Pack description, the chances of winning each item are equal, so theoretically, the chances of getting two Old Seal trinkets are extremely low. Therefore, purchasing this Beginner's Gift Pack should be a guaranteed win, unless your luck is incredibly bad...

Thus, Liu Xing remembered that his character card's Luck was a whopping 80, so he gritted his teeth and purchased the Beginner's Gift Pack.

Liu Xing deliberately washed his hands first, then dug out a plate of mosquito coils left over from last summer, a sort of "bathing and burning incense" ritual. Then, he devoutly prayed to Mr. Ke, hoping that he would bless him today...

After all, this was the Cthulhu Role-Playing Game Hall, so pay respect to Mr. Ke was only natural.

Ding.

After a crisp sound, Liu Xing opened the newbie gift pack.

After seeing the two items he'd drawn, Liu Xing breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed his luck had truly been pretty good.

First, there was a bottle of a certain brand of green tea. This particular tea actually restored Sanity, and it could be used up to three times, restoring 1d6 points of Sanity each time. It also had a 50% chance of bringing the player out of their madness state. It was truly a miracle drug in the Cthulhu role-playing game. After all, sanity normally doesn't restore on its own. Only when a player's skill exceeds 90 points (according to the Cthulhu role-playing game's settings, reaching 90 points in a skill is equivalent to becoming a master in that field, similar to Mr. Yuan in the field of hybrid rice) would they receive a sanity restoration reward, or receive some special psychiatric treatment? Green tea that could restore sanity anytime, anywhere was like buying insurance for one's sanity.

So, for example, this bottle of green tea is priced at a whopping 200 pounds in the mall. Just for this bottle of green tea, Liu Xing's newbie gift pack was a huge win. But another item was even more valuable.

Cthulhu distributes candy. Eating this candy has unexpected consequences and is worth 999 points.

. . .

Liu Xing fell silent. He hadn't expected such a trick!

"Cthulhu distributes candy" is a pun. In a song about Cthulhu, there's a line called "IaIFhatgn!", which originally meant "Long live Cthulhu." However, when it was released in China, it was misheard, so the adorable translator changed the lyrics to "Yaa, yaa, Cthulhu distributes candy." Thus, the "Cthulhu distributes candy" meme spread among Chinese Cthulhu enthusiasts.

However, Liu Xing never imagined that even this Cthulhu RPG lobby would start playing with this meme. It seems this Cthulhu RPG lobby isn't a serious one after all...

After all, we're in a lobby with a higher wipeout rate than the main God Realm. How can we not be cute?

Liu Xing couldn't help but sigh.

But the description of this candy from Mr. Ke had left Liu Xing completely bewildered. Unsure of what it meant, Liu Xing had to interpret it with the utmost malice. Could this so-called "unexpected consequence" be turning him into a Deep Diver?

Thinking of this, Liu Xing decided to put Mr. Ke aside and never use it unless absolutely necessary. After all, Liu Xing didn't want to inexplicably become a Deep Diver.

After browsing the store for a while, Liu Xing exited. Naturally, he was short of money. However, this time, Liu Xing didn't simply exit the Cthulhu RPG lobby. Instead, he went to the club interface and browsed through the announcements. The announcements not only listed which players would be starting the game on a particular day, but also indicated their skill sets. For example, Liu Xing was a support-type player.

So, Liu Xing set his next Cthulhu RPG date for ten days later, as twelve combat-oriented club members would be starting the game that day.
