The setting sun was about to sink below the city skyline, and as twilight descended, it began to snow again.
Leo returned home, making sure to glance at the lawn in the park as he passed. The kitten from that morning was gone.
"It's a cold winter. Good luck, little one," he sighed, touching the ham sausage still in his pocket and pulling his jacket tighter around himself.
When he got to his apartment building and the elevator doors opened, a bold, horizontal line seemed to appear on his forehead. "Why are you here?!"
A little orange cat was curled up in the corner of the elevator, as if it had been waiting for a long time. After Leo appeared, it seemed to yawn, rubbing its sleepy little eyes with its paws, a perfectly innocent and harmless expression on its face.
Leo was dumbfounded. How could this cat possibly know where he lived? It had to be a coincidence.
He pretended not to see it, walked into the elevator, and pressed the button for his floor. As more residents got on, he stood in front of the kitten to make sure it didn't get stepped on.
The elevator started to move. He snuck a peek at the kitten. It was cute, lying there quietly.
When the elevator reached the sixteenth floor, before Leo could even step out, the little orange cat, now wide awake, got up and scurried out between his feet. It sat down quietly in front of his apartment door.
"You've got to be kidding me," Leo's mouth twitched. What was with this cat?
"I'm home," he announced as he walked in.
Diana was taken aback when she saw him enter with the kitten. "Did you pick that up?"
"I was about to ask you the same thing," Leo said weakly.
"No," she said simply. "In all these years, I've only ever picked you up."
"Good point," he said, scratching his head. He looked at the little orange cat that had made itself at home, and hesitated. "Auntie, can we keep it?"
Since it was already here, and it was the middle of a cold winter, he couldn't bear to turn it away.
"I have no objection," Diana nodded. "But you'll have to be the one to take care of it."
"Of course. I've wanted a cat for a long time, actually," he smiled, scooping up the little orange cat. "I'll call you… Ginger," he said without thinking.
The little orange cat blinked, as if wondering how he had come up with such a perfunctory name.
Diana smiled and urged, "Go take a shower. Dinner will be ready soon."
"Okay. Then you're taking one with me, Ginger," he said, and carried the kitten into the bathroom.
He placed it in the bathtub, which was already filled with warm water. The kitten didn't seem to be afraid of the water. It sat on the edge of the tub while the naked Leo lathered up its pale orange fur with shower gel. Soon, it was covered in white foam.
When he got to the cat's belly, he turned it over and began to rub the soft white fur on its lower abdomen. "So, Ginger," he muttered, "you're a girl."
"Meow!" The kitten, which had been squinting its eyes contentedly, suddenly became inexplicably angry. It lowered its head and bit his finger. The sharp little teeth pierced the skin, and a drop of blood fell to the bathroom floor.
"Ginger!" he cried out in pain, quickly pulling his finger back.
The little orange cat, as if realizing it had done something wrong, looked at his bleeding finger with a human-like expression of guilt.
"It's okay, it's not your fault. Just be more careful next time. You can't just bite people," he said, comforting it. He was about to wash the cat saliva and blood off his hand when his whole body went rigid.
"Wait, this feeling is…" he said, his eyes widening in surprise. A familiar, yet unfamiliar sensation swept over him. His normal brown pupils suddenly shifted, becoming faint vertical slits that glowed with a cold light.
The "Parasite" ability had activated.
"Leo?" Diana called out, hearing his cry from the bathroom. She quickly opened the door.
The moment it opened, a barbed tentacle shot out like a spear, straight for her face.
She dodged with incredible speed and looked into the bathroom. She saw the naked Leo standing in the bathtub. From his back, several ferocious, writhing tentacles had sprouted, their edges lined with barbs and sharp teeth.
In the corner, the kitten was looking at Leo's new, terrifying appendages with a look of fascination.
"What in the world happened?" Diana wondered.
"I'm not sure," Leo said with a wry smile, looking at the tentacles that were now trembling wildly. "Ginger bit me, and then this happened."
"So, the blood and saliva acted as the liquid medium and triggered your ability," Diana surmised, glancing at the drop of blood on the floor and then at the kitten. She was still extremely surprised. "But how can a cat…?"
Whoosh!
A tentacle suddenly shot out, its end a gaping maw, and tried to bite her from behind.
Diana was shocked. She felt a terrifying suction, like a small black hole, erupting from the tentacle. She managed to pull away, but the clothes she was wearing were torn to shreds, revealing a perfect body that looked as if it had been carved from jade.
The other seven or eight tentacles began to writhe and twitch, devouring everything in the bathroom at a terrifying speed. In less than half a second, the towels, the shower gel, the mirror, and even the water in the bathtub were gone.
The little orange cat, in a flash, jumped into Leo's arms and escaped the carnage. One of the tentacles wrapped around Diana's slender, flexible waist, and Leo could feel the wonderful sensation on the tip of his… tongue.
Wait a minute, why the tip of my tongue?
Diana grabbed the tentacle, trying not to pull too hard for fear of hurting Leo. "If this is the cat's ability," she said, thinking quickly, "then it's your ability now. Leo, try to control it!"
"I'm trying," he gritted his teeth and closed his eyes. In the darkness, the sensations from the tentacles became even more real, more delicate.
Slowly, the tentacles on his back began to calm down. The one wrapped around Diana's waist slowly loosened its grip.
