The train slowly pulled out of the station, heading for New York.
Nami and Kayla sat with an empty seat between them, a hint of hostility in their eyes as they glanced at each other.
Leo, sitting in the middle, didn't seem to notice. He had his schoolbag on his lap, and from a small opening in the zipper, a little orange head poked out.
"A kitten?" Nami said, surprised. "Leo, when did you get a kitten? And it's an orange cat."
"Her name is Ginger. I found her in the park yesterday," he explained, gently stroking the kitten's chin. "My aunt was out, so I thought it would be better to bring her with me." Ginger purred contentedly.
"I've always wanted a kitten," Nami said, her eyes shining. No one, after all, was immune to the charms of a cute kitten.
Kayla, however, had a strange look in her jewel-like azure eyes from the moment she had seen the cat.
"Let me hold her," Nami said, reaching for the kitten. But before her hand could touch Ginger, the kitten's fur stood on end, and it quickly retreated back into the schoolbag. From the darkness within, a pair of strange, vertical-pupiled eyes glowed with a faint blue light.
Nami's whole body tensed, and she instinctively pulled her hand back, the tiny hairs on her arms standing on end. She and the kitten were both startled.
"What are you afraid of? She's my friend," Leo said, chiding the kitten. He smiled at Nami. "Don't mind her. She's very defensive. Right now, I'm the only one she'll let touch her."
"It's okay," Nami said, shaking her head, though she couldn't help but stare at the schoolbag, a deep fear and surprise in her eyes. Her spider-sense had been screaming at her. For a moment, she had felt as if she were about to be "eaten."
Was it just her imagination?
"I'm going to take Ginger to the restroom for some water," Leo said, grabbing his schoolbag. "She gets a little irritable when she's thirsty."
As soon as he was gone, Nami's attention shifted to Kayla. "Alright, what's your game?"
"My game?" Kayla asked, the sunlight from the window making her dark blonde hair shine like platinum. "I want to date Leo. Is that a game?"
"You've got a lot of nerve," Nami said, her cheeks flushing. "You can lie to everyone else, but you can't lie to me. I know you're…"
"Nami," Kayla interrupted, her eyes narrowing slightly. "You're not an ordinary person, are you?"
"So what if I'm not?" Nami admitted, now that the cards were on the table. She had felt a sense of crisis from the moment she had first seen Kayla at school, a feeling even more intense than when she had faced the Abomination.
"Whatever your purpose is, you can come at me," Nami said, clenching her fists, ready for a fight. "But Leo is just an ordinary person."
"My intentions are perfectly normal," Kayla said, her face serious. "I have no interest in you personally. And as for Leo… if you can be his friend, why can't I be his girlfriend?"
She has a point, Nami thought, realizing that this girl was not going to be easy to deal with. But it didn't seem like she intended to hurt Leo.
"What do you think of that cat?" Nami asked, changing the subject.
"That's no ordinary cat," Kayla said earnestly. "In fact, it's not a cat at all. It just looks like one. On the inside, it's completely different from any species on this planet." She propped her cheek on her hand, thinking. "I've never seen a creature like it. Its bones and internal organs are… unusual. Like a small, walking black hole."
"A black hole? Then isn't it dangerous for Leo to be alone with it?" Nami stood up, looking worriedly at the restroom door.
"Don't worry," Kayla said, blinking. "I've been watching them. The creature is very well-behaved with him, no different from an ordinary kitten."
"You… you can see through things?" Nami looked back at her in shock. How else could she have known about the kitten's internal structure? And if she could see through the kitten, that meant…
"Of course," Kayla nodded, then pointed toward the restroom. "Leo is in there right now, and he's…"
"Close your eyes! Don't look!" Nami cried, her face turning red as she lunged forward and covered Kayla's eyes with her hands.
Kayla subconsciously raised a hand and gently pushed her away. But the "gentle" push sent Nami flying into the back of the opposite seat with a loud "bang." Nami stared at her, stunned. How could such a slender arm possess such terrible power?
"I'm sorry," Kayla said, panicking. "I-I didn't control my strength."
"It's a good thing it was me," Nami said, exhaling. She dusted herself off and stood up, unharmed.
A moment later, Leo returned to his seat. He looked surprised to see Nami and Kayla sitting so close together, seemingly getting along.
Had the two beautiful girls become friends?
As soon as they saw him, they quickly returned to their seats, their expressions calm, as if nothing had happened.
Leo was at a loss. Wait, he thought, why is the back of that chair dented?
The train continued on its way, getting closer and closer to New York.
