At seven-thirty in the morning, Leo stood in front of the mirror, watching as his pupils shifted from cat-like vertical slits back to their normal human brown. He picked up a new bar of soap. No tentacles shot out to devour it. The ability was gone.

He let out a sigh of relief. The accident had given him a better understanding of his "Parasite" ability. A direct exchange of fluids with a female would allow him to hold her ability for twelve hours, a full three times longer than the four hours he had gotten from the indirect exchange.

Ginger, the Flerken cub, looked at him with a strange expression. In her unique senses, Leo had become one of her "kind," and now he had changed back. She was a little disappointed. If I bite him again, she thought, will he change back?

As if sensing her intent, Leo solemnly warned, "Ginger, you can't bite me anymore. If you do, you'll be grounded from eating for a day."

"Meow," she whined, her ears drooping and her tail limp.

His aunt was out. Leo was bored, but he was also enjoying the quiet. He lay on the sofa, content. Too much had happened recently. He much preferred the relaxed, normal life of an ordinary person. Whoever wants to save the world can go ahead, he thought. I'm not a hero.

He picked up his phone and started scrolling through Facebook. He hadn't checked it in a couple of days. He had assumed that the talk about the battle would have died down by now. He was wrong.

The events in the city two days ago were not only still being talked about, but the enthusiasm had grown to an astonishing degree. News reports were overwhelming, and the internet was flooded with discussions. People had taken the blurry footage of his fight and turned it into avatars, cover photos, and memes.

He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Oh, god."

The only saving grace was that his true identity hadn't been revealed. The videos were either too blurry or only showed him from behind. No one knew that the new, monster-slaying, silver-haired goddess was actually an ordinary high school student, and a male one at that. The only ones who knew the truth were his aunt, Nami, and the now-dead Abomination.

But seeing pictures of himself in that outfit all over the internet made his toes curl in embarrassment. This was the true definition of a social nightmare. He quickly opened Twitter. His classmates were all posting things like, "I want to be the sword held by the silver-haired goddess," and "I'm officially a fan." One of his male teachers had even changed his Twitter profile picture to a screenshot of Leo in the armor.

He saw one classmate's post that read, "I want her to step on me."

The corners of his mouth twitched. This world is hopeless, he thought. Time to start thinking about destroying it, or maybe just moving to another planet.

His face was a mask of despair. Just then, he got a private message on Twitter.

Nami: "What are you doing?"

Leo: "Contemplating the end of the world."

Nami: "???"

A second message quickly followed.

Nami: "Fine, I'm not angry with you anymore."

He still had no idea why she had been angry in the first place.

Nami: "But you have to promise me one thing."

Leo: "What is it?"

Nami: "Come with me to New York."

"New York?" he said, surprised. It wasn't that far, only a three-hour train ride. But it was still another city.

Leo: "To go shopping?"

Nami: "Of course not! Did you forget? At the end of the semester, in January, our class is going on a trip. The teacher already announced that we're going to New York. As the class president, I want to go ahead and plan the route."

Before he could refuse, she added, "You know, it's not safe for a girl to travel alone."

Leo: "Okay."

Nami: "Great! Let's meet at the train station at ten o'clock today. The sooner we go, the sooner we can get back."

"Today," he frowned. He had thought she would want to go after Christmas, but it made sense. The days after Christmas were for family.

He was about to get up and get ready when another private message came in. This time, it wasn't from Nami.

Kayla: "Senior, good morning."

It was the girl from yesterday.

Leo: "Good morning. I'm sorry, I forgot to give you an answer yesterday. I've thought about it, and you're a very nice girl, but I have no experience with dating, so I can't accept your confession."

The good-guy card had been played. He breathed a sigh of relief, but before he could put his phone down, another message came in.

Kayla: "Then let's try going on a date!"

A date?

Before he could reply, another message appeared.

Kayla: "How about today?"

At the train station, Leo felt a massive headache coming on. In front of him, two girls stood facing each other. Nami and Kayla.

Nami was dressed in her usual beige jeans, black boots, and a well-fitting hooded jacket. With her brilliant short golden hair, she looked capable and cool, an "older sister" type, as the students at school would say.

Kayla, on the other hand, was almost unrecognizable. She wasn't wearing her usual black-rimmed glasses, and her hair wasn't tied back. Her slightly curled, dark blonde hair fell to her shoulders, and when she lifted her head, she revealed a youthful, sweet face. She was wearing ordinary clothes, but her natural beauty shone through.

The two beautiful girls of different styles immediately attracted the attention of the other passengers at the station. But when they saw the boy standing between them, a collective look of grief and indignation spread across their faces.

What a waste.
