===========================================================

The journey from Last Call was a study in contrasts. Ace, now a king with a purpose, stood at the prow of his small ship, the wind whipping through his hair, his eyes fixed on the horizon. He was a pillar of focused, burning energy. Beside him, leaning against the railing with his eyes closed and a lazy smile on his face, was a monument to absolute indolence. Kuzan had created a small, personal patch of frost on the deck to keep his sake cool.

"You know," Ace said, not taking his eyes off the sea, "for a man who just pledged himself to hunting the world's greatest evil, you don't seem particularly stressed."

"Ara ra... stress is a lot of work," Kuzan replied without opening his eyes. "And Garp-san only asked me to keep you fools from getting killed. He never said I had to be enthusiastic about it."

Their strange, new alliance was settling into an easy rhythm. It was the calm before the inevitable storm. They were low on supplies, so Ace charted a course for the nearest neutral island, a bustling port town called "Faro's Lantern."

As they approached, however, the distant sounds of a raucous port were conspicuously absent. Instead, they were greeted by an eerie silence, punctuated by a single, repeating sound: the sharp, concussive crack of a flintlock pistol, followed by a woman's enraged scream.

"Trouble," Ace stated, his expression hardening.

"So much for a quiet drink," Kuzan sighed, finally pushing himself off the railing.

They docked their ship and moved into the town, their footsteps echoing in the deserted streets. They found the source of the commotion in the central market square. It was a scene of brutal, one-sided combat.

Jewelry Bonney, the "Big Eater," was on her last legs. Her clothes were torn, she was covered in cuts and bruises, and she was panting heavily, her pink hair matted with sweat and grime. She was desperately firing her pistols at a tall, ugly woman with long, pale blue hair, who dodged each shot with a wiggle that was almost insulting.

"Nyahaha! Is that all you've got, little girl?" Catarina Devon, the "Crescent Moon Hunter," purred, her lips curled in a cruel smile. "I expected more from the whelp of a Revolutionary."

"Shut your mouth, bitch!" Bonney shrieked, firing again. Devon simply transformed part of her arm into a fox's paw, the claws deflecting the bullet with a casual flick.

Ace froze, his mind a maelstrom. He saw Bonney, not just as a fellow Supernova, but through the lens of Kenji's memories. He saw the whole, heartbreaking story: Kuma, the gentle giant, the loving father, sacrificing his body, his mind, his very soul to the World Government to save his adopted daughter. He saw this girl, fighting not just for her life, but for the faint, desperate hope of restoring the father she had lost. The pain of it resonated with his own story, with the sacrifices his own father had made.

"Kuzan," Ace said, his voice a low, dangerous growl. "You take her left. I'll take her right."

"A pincer movement? How very tactical of you, Captain," Kuzan drawled, a lazy grin spreading across his face.

On the battlefield, Devon had grown bored. "Time to end this little chase," she said, transforming fully into her nine-tailed fox form. She lunged, her claws aimed directly at Bonney's throat.

Bonney squeezed her eyes shut, too exhausted to even raise her arms.

She didn't feel claws. She felt a sudden, biting cold. Her eyes snapped open. A thick, perfectly smooth wall of ice had erupted from the ground, blocking Devon's attack completely. On her left, leaning against the ice wall as if he'd been there all day, was Kuzan.

"Ara ra... picking on children?" the former Admiral asked, his voice dripping with condescending boredom. "How very unjust."

Before Devon could react to the impossible appearance of one foe, a wave of intense heat washed over her from the right. She spun around to see Ace standing there, his fist wreathed in a calm, controlled fire, having just intercepted her other clawed hand.

"He's right," Ace said, his eyes burning with a cold fire. "It's pathetic. Why don't you try picking on someone your own size?"

Devon stared, her mind struggling to process the scene. She was trapped between a former Admiral and the man the world was calling a new Emperor. Her predatory grin faltered, replaced by a flicker of genuine fear.

Bonney just stared, her jaw agape, her mind completely blank. She had been saved.

"Portgas D. Ace," Devon hissed, regaining her composure. "And the dog who abandoned his post, Kuzan. What an unexpected reunion."

"We're full of surprises," Ace said. "Now, why don't you tell me why you're so obsessed with this girl? Did she eat the last piece of cherry pie?"

Devon let out a sharp, cruel laugh. "You think this is about Teach's orders? Oh, this is far more interesting than that. We let her 'escape' our ship, you know. We wanted to see who would come sniffing after her."

Her eyes glinted with a cunning malice, and this was the twist that changed everything.

"You see," she purred, her voice a conspiratorial whisper, "the World Government is also looking for her. Desperately. They put out a secret, astronomical bounty on her head, available only to a select few in the underworld."

Ace's eyes narrowed. This wasn't in the original story.

"Why?" he demanded.

Devon's grin was pure poison. "Because her Devil Fruit, the one that manipulates age... it's a terrifying thing. What do you think would happen if a user that powerful touched, say... a mindless, living weapon whose consciousness has been erased?" She let the question hang in the air. "The Gorosei are terrified that she's the only person in the world who could potentially reverse the Pacifista process. That she could give Bartholomew Kuma his mind back."

She looked Ace up and down, her smile turning triumphant. "Imagine the secrets a man like that could tell. Secrets about the Revolutionaries. Secrets about Vegapunk. Secrets the World Government buried a long, long time ago. She isn't just a pirate to them; she's a key that could unlock their most secure vaults."

The revelation stunned Ace into silence. Garp. His promise to Garp. It wasn't just about protecting him and Luffy.

"So you see," Devon said, a new, dangerous light in her eyes. "We don't just want her for her power. We want her because she's the one piece of bait in the entire world that both the Burning Crown Pirates and the World Government will kill to protect. And we're going to enjoy the show."
