Joe's POV

The steady hum of the machines filled the hospital wing, that sterile buzz that reminded me how fragile everything could become in one second. I hated it, the smell of antiseptic, the too-bright lights, the way the air felt thick with sickness instead of strength.

I stood with my arms crossed, jaw tight, staring at the doctor as he flipped through Lily's file. His glasses kept slipping down his nose, and he pushed them back up every three seconds. It made me want to break them in half.

Finally, the man spoke. "She's lucky."

My wolf stirred instantly, ears back, growling inside me. Lucky?

The doctor looked up, his voice steady but cautious. "No concussion, despite the impact to her head. She's badly bruised, yes, and one rib was fractured, but we've set it. With rest, she'll recover. By tomorrow she should be stable enough to move around."

Lucky. He dared to use that word again.
