The silence in the car pressed against my chest harder than the bruises across my ribs. Every bump in the road sent a dull ache through my side, but it wasn't the pain that gnawed at me. it was the weight of the unsaid words hanging between the three of us.

Joe hadn't spoken a single word about that… slip. That question. Where did he hurt you?

My heart hadn't stopped replaying it, my body still weak from the unexpected tenderness of it. His voice, his eyes on me, not cold, not detached. For the first time since his coma, he'd spoken to me. To the real me

But now, his jaw was clenched, his eyes forward on the road, as if willing himself to forget what he'd said. Ivan's silence wasn't comforting either; he kept fiddling with his cuffs, like he was preparing for a fight that hadn't yet arrived.
