My pulse thundered so loud in my ears that I almost missed it.
Did he just say I will be his newly wedded wife?
The words lingered in the air, heavier than the cold draft that crawled through the office. My heart skipped before my wolf betrayed me with a little jump of excitement. I cursed under my breath. Not now. Not here. Not when every instinct screamed that Joe was poison.
"Your… your what?" I blurted, louder than I intended.
Joe's gaze didn't waver. He stood like a pillar, unbothered by the shock that rippled through the room. Xavier's mouth parted slightly, as though he'd swallowed his tongue. Sonia blinked at me in confusion.
And me? I was fighting the urge to crumble.
"I don't…" the words tumbled out before I could stop them. "I don't want to go in as your wife."
The room went still.
