Chapter 113Lily's POV
My ankle screamed with every step, but I didn't slow down.
I didn't dare.
The guard's boots thundered behind me, his curses hot and sharp in the night air. I didn't look back; I could feel him closing in. His shadow clung to mine, longer, faster.
"Stop right there, girl!" he barked.
"Keep walking Lily, just Keep walking."
I tried to force my legs into something like a run. My breath tore through my chest, ragged and shallow. The world blurred into dark hedges and flickering torches.
He was too close, way too close.
I turned a corner sharply, nearly tripping over my own feet. My veil brushed against my cheek, damp with sweat. I pressed a hand to my ribs, my lungs burning, but I kept moving.
The echo of his boots faltered.
My heart lurched. He hadn't turned the corner yet.
"Where are you?" his voice growled somewhere behind me.
I slowed, sucking in air through my teeth.
