Chapter 16 - Dilettante (3)

...

I swear the people in this world are so weird.

Wei An then left the professor's office to go to his next class. It had taken some time to talk with Professor Syprys, so by the time Wei An arrived outside in the open area of the academy for summoning classes, he had already been fifteen minutes late.

Wei An then walked toward the area; students looked at him surprised but did not say a word. Professor Garnet, the summoning class's professor. She had dark blue hair with a few purple streaks; she looked young to be a professor, but her demeanor was that of a senior. The professor looked at Wei An, who was late. The professor looked serious but did not shout and spoke sternly.

"Mr. Wei An, could you tell me why you're fifteen minutes late to the class?"

"Ah...well, I apologize, ma'am. I did not mean to be late; I had a talk with Professor Syprys, so it ended up taking some time to get here."

"Hm, very well. Grab your tools. If I find out that you lied, then you shall be given a demerit."

"Yes, ma'am."

Thankfully I didn't get into too much trouble for being late...

As time passed, Professor Garnet discussed the principles of summoning and how it works. Students then drew the standard magic circle to summon a companion.

"Now remember, students. Whatever you summon is entirely up to you and your magical power. Be careful, and don't act rashly. Do not summon something that you can't form a contract with."

"May I see the hands of students who have companions already? If you have one, then you don't need to do the basic summon ritual."

Ah, would Bai Wang be considered a companion? I didn't form a contract formally, though. I guess I better form a contract with her when I get back.

A few students who were adept in summoning raised their hands; after a few seconds, Wei An also raised his hand. The professor looked at everyone who raised their hand, then spoke.

"Alright, students who have already summoned or have a companion, stay by this side." She had told them to stay by the near table away from the students who were new to summoning. She then assisted the students who were new and struggling with summoning a companion.

After a while, when the students finally had their own companions, she instructed them to bond with the summons to create a connection. The students listened and started bonding with their companions.

The professor saw this and then finally went to the side where students already had a companion or those that were not new to summoning. She then asked everyone what kind of summon they have and how high their bond is. Students on that side spoke one by one about their summons. Just then, Wei An saw a familiar face that was introducing their summon.

Ah, the elven girl...what was her name again?

"Hi, Professor Garnet, my name is Sylvia, and well, I'm an elf, so I usually deal with elemental summons, and my companion is a sparrow; it's an earth element. My bond with it is also quite high!"

"Ah, what a lively young fellow. Good, now next."

Sylvia is also in summoning class, huh? Weird, I thought she'd be in the elemental class...Most elves go there anyway.

Students continued to introduce themselves and their companion. A few minutes later it was Wei An's turn. "Hello, professor. My companion is a fox. As for its element... well, I am not familiar with it yet."

"A fox? Hm, very well. Well, since you aren't that familiar with your companion, then my assignment to you is to find out its element."

"Yes, ma'am."

The professor then moved on to the next student. After a few seconds Sylvia then went up to Wei An. "Hey! You didn't tell me you were here!"

"Ah, I didn't notice you."

"How could you? I thought our interaction was memorable."

"Not in the slightest."

"So... what kind of companion do you have?"

"I just introduced it just now; did you not listen?"

"Ah well. I kind of forget to pay attention."

"It's a fox."

"Ooo, what kind?"

"I don't know."

"How can you not know about your own companion?"

Probably because I just found it on the streets following me.

"I haven't bonded with it yet."

"Well, then good luck with that. I heard foxes are hard to bond with since they don't open up that much."

"Mn, I guess so."

The class went on with the professor assigning tasks to the students. She then dismissed the class and told everyone to bond with their companion as much as possible since the next lesson would be a test of cooperation.

Class was finally over, and Wei An left the place, heading to the cafeteria to get a quick snack. Sylvia followed behind him, "Hey, wait up!"

"Why are you following me?"

"Jeez, you really don't know how to make friends."

"I do know, but I prefer to be alone."

"Ouch, don't be like that. Besides, I'm not following you to annoy you."

This girl really acts childish...

"Whatever. Just do what you want."

"Okay!"

Sylvia followed Wei An from behind; both of them arrived at the cafeteria. Wei An had gotten a light snack. "Hey, what do you want?" Wei An asked Sylvia, who was staring at some cakes.

"Oh! Are you offering?"

"I wouldn't ask if I wasn't."

"Then, I want cake! "

Hah... She reminds me of my niece... I wonder how my world is doing, hopefully its peaceful there.

"Okay."

After Wei An paid for the snack, they both then proceeded to an empty cafeteria chair and took a seat.

"So, you do know how to treat your friends."

"What do you think of me? I know how to treat people well."

"Sure. You're rude, and everyone is talking bad about you."

"Rumors are just rumors."

Both of them continued to talk peacefully, sitting down and eating their snacks.
