"Bro," Rory said, dropping his pen like the exams had already murdered him, "imagine if Michael Cassano suddenly showed up here. Instant pass. He'd hack the grading system, boom—we're all top rankers."
Edrix slammed the desk, cackling. "YES! Michael freaking Cassano! The guy's like a walking cheat code. Best hacker in the world, head of the Cassano empire… I swear, if he was our leader instead of you, Jay, we'd be legends already."
I froze for half a second. My spoon hovered above the ice cream tub. Michael Cassano. The name still rang in my chest like an old scar that never healed.
Before I could process it, Cin chimed in with his usual dramatic flair, "Pfft. You guys worship the wrong man. My idol is Samuel Warner. Head of global healthcare, son of the Warner empire, and the literal future of medicine. Even my family bows when his name is dropped."
Cin clasped his hands like he was praying to Saint Samuel. "Warner-sama, notice me!"
I snorted into my ice cream. "You guys are unbelievable. You talk about them like they're Marvel superheroes."
"Wait, wait," Keifer leaned in with that sly smirk of his, "don't act like you don't have a favorite too, Jay. If Rory's drooling over Michael, and Cin's writing fan letters to Samuel, who's your pick, hmm?"
My mouth opened before I could stop it."Adam—"
The name almost slipped out. Almost.
But then I bit my tongue so hard it hurt. My chest tightened, memories flooding back like a dam cracking open.
Flashback – Childhood Memories
I was eight, running barefoot through the training yard Tita Seri had set up behind her villa. The sun had turned the floorboards into a golden battlefield. My childhood friends—Michael, Adam, and Samuel—were all running in wild circles, shrieking like idiots, but somehow, Tita Seri managed to maintain control.
"Jay! Again!" Tita Seri's voice cut through the chaos, sharp but somehow kind. I was dodging a wooden sword swing from Michael, almost tripping over a training dummy.
"Not fast enough, Jay!" she scolded, hands on her hips, but her eyes twinkled with amusement. "If you fall behind in my training, I will make you redo the drills… with ice water!"
I squealed, hopping over a log, and Adam, laughing like a maniac, grabbed my leg, sending both of us tumbling into the mud.
Tita Seri shook her head. "You are going to get yourselves killed one day… but at least it will be spectacular."
Michael, mud-covered, tried to look heroic. "I meant to do that!"
Samuel rolled his eyes, adjusting his glasses. "You're all hopeless. Jay, at least try not to die in front of me."
I threw a tiny pebble at him. "Hey! You're supposed to be my ally, not my critic!"
Tita Seri laughed for the first time in weeks. "See? This is why I train you all. Not just strength or skill, but courage, loyalty… and the ability to survive idiots like each other."
Later, in the quiet of the evening, we practiced swordsmanship. I remember Tita Seri kneeling beside me, correcting my grip. "Stronger, Jay. Every movement must have purpose. One day, a fight will demand everything from you—and only precision will save you."
She handed me a small practice gun when I was ten. "Marksmanship is not about anger, Jay. It's about focus. One shot, one life. Treat it with respect… like you would your friends, your family, yourself."
I nodded, scared out of my mind, but I practiced anyway. Hours turned into days. Pain, bruises, exhaustion—but every night, her smile reminded me why I endured it. Not punishment, not cruelty, but belief.
Back in the present, I blinked, snapping back to the cafeteria chaos. Rory was still arguing with Edrix over who could steal the last piece of chocolate, Cin was bowing dramatically in Samuel's honor, and Keifer was staring at me with that half-knowing, half-jealous expression he wore like a second skin.
I forced a grin. The memories were both heavy and warm, funny and painful. Tita Seri, Michael, Adam, Samuel… my mentors, my friends, my family without blood. The people who shaped me into someone who could survive this chaotic, ridiculous, dangerous life.
And as much as I laughed with Section E, somewhere deep inside, I carried those lessons—every prank, every fall into mud, every bruise, every whispered warning of Tita Seri's—because one day, they would matter
