~Abigail's POV~
Where… am I?
There's a faint beeping somewhere close, steady but distant, like it's echoing through water.
My throat feels painfully dry, tight, like I haven't swallowed in years. My body is heavy.... so heavy I'm not even sure it's mine.
I force my eyes to open.
Light stabs into them. I hiss, blinking rapidly as my heart stutters, and the beeping beside me speeds up in response. It takes a moment before the blur sharpens into white walls, soft curtains, a monitor.
A hospital.
I'm in a hospital. On a hospital bed.
And when I turn my head.. slowly, painfully to my left… I'm not alone.
Darius is slumped forward in a chair, his head resting on the edge of my bed, his hand wrapped around mine like he never once let go. His hair is a mess, his shoulders tense even in sleep. His face is soft though, peaceful in a way I've never seen.
It takes a second.
And then everything hits me at once.
Cassandra's gun. The burning pain in my shoulder.
