Chapter 4 - The Sermon

Connor wakes up, his head aching, but not injured. He's on the mattress now, but still restrained. "How did I get in the bed...?"

Flynn enters the room, a solemn expression on his face. He notices Connor's woken up, and he gives a comforting, but quite empty, smile. "Awake now?"

Connor tears up. "You have to help me! I was getting food when I was jumped and brought here! They threatened me! Please I'm begging you to help me... I don't want to stay here."

Flynn sighs, then he walks over to the mattress in the corner of the room beneath the lone, small, barred window. "I was hired to protect, care for, and watch you. As well as get information for Zane."

Connor glares at the floor. "So... You won't help me? All I wanted was to get food... How'd I end up here?" Connor pauses, "Oh, by the way my name is-"

Flynn cuts him off, "Connor White."

Connor's eyes widen as he stares at Flynn. "Wh- What? No! That's not my name!"

Flynn sighs, "Unfortunately it is now. At least that's what Zane said. I'm Flynn- just call me Flynn."

Connor's eyes fill with despair and hopelessness. He stutters, "At- At least tell me what they plan on doing to me."

Flynn walk away, "I don't know... All I know is that this is what life is like now, for both of us. I have to serve a deity, and you have to be one."

Several hours pass

Connor is still on his mattress, tied up and staring blankly at the door. Hoping that someone will save him from this unknown fate.

Zane enters the room, a bright but fake, smile stretched from ear to ear. "I brought you a present my dear little god!" He releases a small puppy into the room. Then he unties Connor.

"What- What is this?" Connor asks, thinking it's some kind of ploy.

Zane replies calmly, with some hidden meaning behind his words... "A gift, for our god. You may move around your room freely, make sure to take care of Viola. That's her name, everything she needs is in the corner below the foot of your be- mattress."

The pet stuff in the corner consists of a pet bed, some sort of pet food, a water bowl, toys, a collar, and a chain.

Zane leaves the room, locking it from the outside for the first time. This is because it wasn't necessary until now since he was tied up.

Sunday arrives, after many long hours in that dark room...

There's a commotion outside in the chapel room, it's not very quiet. And you can hear a loud voice, most likely Zane's. Although it's difficult to make out Connor got the gist of what was being said.

"Something about big news...? Hmm..." Connor reviews what little he could hear. Before his door unlocks and Flynn enters. "Flynn! What's going on?"

Flynn, looking indifferent to Connor's situation, motions for Connor to follow. "Until we can get the materials in, you better not try to run. Especially in front of the believers. I'm sure you know what Zane will do to keep face."

Connor remains quiet, some high members put a pure white, baggy robe on him. Then they lead him into the chapel, where hundreds watch in awe.

Zane smirks, "Meet our god, who was generous enough to come down in a human body! He was eager to meet you all because your faith in him was so great!"

Connor shifts uncomfortably as he's moved to beside Zane. He looks down, not wanting to see their faces. Zane nudges him.

Connor looks up, people stare at him, some with awe, suspicion, curiousity, and excitement. Connor wants to cry from embarrassment, shame, and... For help.
