The moment the tremor faded beneath my feet and my voice caught in my throat at the exact point where the whisper of Azerath dissolved into silence, Lucian tightened his grip on my arm as if anchoring me back into my own body. My heart was still racing and my breath felt unsteady as I tried to decipher what was happening to the world around us and what was trying to reach out from whatever ancient realm existed beyond mortal sight. The corridor felt strangely colder than before and the faint moonlight that slipped through the distant window cast long silver streaks across the floorboards that made everything appear distant and uncertain.
Lucian leaned slightly forward, searching my face with steady calm, but I could see the worry beneath his eyes. He repeated the question he had asked just moments before, and I could hear the restrained concern in his tone.
