The moment Madge's expression changed, I knew I had struck a nerve. Her delicate fingers clenched the check so tightly her knuckles went white. Those perfectly composed features twisted into something sharp and dangerous, though she kept that saccharine smile plastered across her face.
"Are you trying to blackmail me?" Her voice dripped with venom despite the sweet tone.
I studied her carefully, noting how the mask of vulnerability had completely slipped away. Now I could see what lurked beneath all that practiced fragility - something cold and calculating. I let my own smile surface, deliberately slow and knowing.
"I'm simply wondering about the timeline. When you and Soren were together, who pursued whom? Or maybe none of it was real to begin with?"
