Two mornings later, I woke up to the sound of someone banging on my door like the palace was on fire. I couldn't even pretend to be surprised, everybody was raving mad these days.
"Your Highness!" one of my maids yelled. "Lord Varyn requests your presence in the dressing quarters. Immediately!"
I groaned, covering my face with a pillow. "Why can't I just have at least a full 24 hours peace and quiet around here?"
By the time I sat up, three of them had already rushed in. "We need to get you ready," one said, in full excitement and it almost made me want to grab her by the neck and ask her what the fuck she was so giddy about.
"Ready for what?" I asked, rubbing my temples.
She stopped midway and smiled in a way that people usually did in those corny high-school movies where the popular male lead was about to choose a date for prom.
"His Lordship has arranged a small gathering tonight. A pre-celebration for your birthday sorta."
I paused. "A what?"
