Chapter 84 - Chapter 84 Hand Against His Heart

Faye's POV

"This should be secure enough," I said quietly, deliberately avoiding his gaze as I examined the rough stone walls surrounding us. Since we'd entered this cave, Hardy's stare had been constant and unrelenting. The intensity of it made my skin prickle with awareness, scrambling my thoughts when I needed them clear.

Maybe I had mud streaked across my face. Or dried blood. My hand nearly lifted to check before I caught myself. Looking to him for confirmation would require meeting those piercing eyes, and I wasn't prepared for whatever I might find there.

"We need to wait out the red moon here, at least for now." The words came out breathless, and heat crept up my neck despite the frigid air.

My breath still formed white clouds in front of me, the cave's chill biting through my clothes. Yet my face burned as if I stood too close to a fire. The only explanation was embarrassment, and that realization made everything worse.

Why was I reacting like this?
