"So he wanted me here because of the curses," I murmured, folding the letter carefully. "I assumed he simply didn't want me traveling alone."
Selena gave a knowing nod. "He needs you present when the red moon loosens the bonds."
"Tell me what you understand about curses," I pressed.
"They surge strongest before a red moon arrives," she explained. "Witches don't conjure them from nothing. They weave them with blood and spoken names. Most require a living sacrifice to begin. Each death that follows feeds the curse, making it more powerful. That's why they target places where people gather - mining shifts, traveling parties, celebration days. They don't seek to bring prosperity or good fortune. They harvest death."
"Can they corrupt both animals and spread disease simultaneously?"
