Chapter 30 -  Maybe Team Rocket Should Just Be Good Guys Already

In the Black World—

Thanks to Ash's report—and Professor Oak personally vouching for him—Officer Jenny quietly dispatched a team to investigate. Sure enough, they uncovered a major Team Rocket operation! The entire group was caught in one sweep, locked up without incident. As the whistleblower, Ash even received a sizable cash reward. After all, several Rocket members were wanted criminals with hefty bounties. That reward solved Ash's most pressing financial problem. As his Pokémon team grew larger, their food, care, and supplements had all become expensive. He couldn't keep calling home to ask his mom, Delia, for money forever. He was traveling now—time to stand on his own feet. Sure, Brock had plenty of savings—as a Gym Leader, he drew a good monthly salary and even received League subsidies for raising Pokémon. But Ash wasn't about to treat his travel partner like an ATM. So yeah—this cash meant a lot. And it gave him… an idea. "Hey, what if we, uh, catch criminals on our journey to earn travel funds? What do you think?" Misty: "…" Brock: "…" Usually, people avoided villains like the plague. Ash, on the other hand, had just turned them into a walking ATM network. "Pika pi! Pikachu~!" Pikachu raised a paw in approval, clearly supporting the idea. With that plan, his meals were bound to improve dramatically! As the trio joked and laughed, the dark screen gradually faded to black.

[Lance: I feel like… Black World Ash just awakened some kind of terrifying new attribute.]

[Cynthia: Looks like the villains in his world are in for some real bad luck.] [Diantha: So the Black World Ash footage just ended. That means they're probably heading to the fourth Gym next, right?]

[Misty: Most likely. Honestly, we didn't even plan to go to Porta Vista for vacation—it was only because of the storm that we ended up there.]

[Brock: Still, gotta admit—the ladies there were amazing!]

[Misty: Enough already, Brock. Stop embarrassing yourself.]

[Ash: Wait a sec—if we don't go to Porta Vista, Misty won't be able to catch her Horsea, right? And that giant Tentacruel incident won't happen either…]

[Misty: Oh, right! Uh-oh… what do we do now?]

[Lance: Giant Tentacruel? What's that about?]

[Brock: You'll see soon, Mr. Lance. It's coming up next.]

As soon as Brock finished speaking, the white screen began to brighten again, continuing the playback of the original Ash's story.

In the White World—

Ash and his friends arrived in Porta Vista, taking a well-deserved break. Ash even ran into his long-time rival, Gary. Later, they headed to the harbor to take a ship to Saffron City—but suddenly, chaos erupted. The local Tentacool had begun attacking humans! After some investigation, they learned the cause—an old woman named Nastina was trying to build a floating luxury hotel, destroying the Tentacool colony's habitat. That's what triggered the Tentacool's counterattack. Team Rocket then joined forces with Nastina, launching a full-scale assault against the Tentacool. They pulled out their so-called "Homemade Triple Vinegar," claiming it could melt Tentacool on contact. But instead, their "miracle acid" caused one Tentacool to mutate into a gigantic Tentacruel! It went on a rampage, smashing the harbor to pieces! In the end, only through Pikachu's lightning, Horsea's aid, and Misty's emotional plea were they able to calm the Tentacruel down. It returned to the sea, and Misty successfully caught a Horsea.

[Ash: Wait, what?! That giant Tentacruel was Team Rocket's fault?!]

[Misty: Wow… you guys really have a talent for making trouble.] Their intentions had been bad, but the outcome… not so much. If not for their "Homemade Triple Vinegar," the Tentacool never would've had the power to resist humanity. At the time, Ash's team was still weak—they couldn't have stopped the destruction on their own.

[Lance: As expected of Team Rocket's trio—never failing to fail in the most spectacular way possible.]

[Bruno: …What kind of compliment is that supposed to be?]

[Erika: Hehe, honestly, the three of them might as well just be good guys already. They try to be evil, but somehow end up helping everyone.]

[Diantha: They've got real potential as comedians, too. Their timing is perfect.]

[James: Hey! We're villains! Not comedians! Villains, got it?!]

[Jessie: You just wait! Someday, we'll pull off something truly earth-shattering!]

[Ash: Uh-huh, sure. We'll be waiting.]

After realizing the giant Tentacruel incident was Team Rocket's doing, Ash and the others actually breathed a sigh of relief. In Black World Ash's world, they probably wouldn't go to the harbor, which meant Team Rocket wouldn't either. So… that giant Tentacruel wouldn't appear. But that raised another question—without Team Rocket's accidental "help," would the Tentacool still be able to protect their home?

In the White World—

After solving the harbor incident, Ash's group traveled onward, arriving at Maiden's Peak. There, they encountered rumors of a ghostly maiden haunting the cliffs. After investigating, they learned the "ghost" was actually a Gastly in disguise. Soon after, they continued toward Saffron City. Just before reaching the city, they witnessed a Butterfree migration. Ash's own Butterfree fell in love with a beautiful pink one.

With Team Rocket's help, the two Butterfree became a pair—and Ash tearfully said goodbye to his first Pokémon companion. Then, they finally reached Saffron City, where they met the most terrifying Gym Leader in Kanto—Sabrina. Unaware of her true power, Ash challenged her head-on—and was utterly crushed. In defeat, Sabrina used her psychic power to shrink them into toys for her amusement. Thankfully, a mysterious man rescued them in time.

Later, they learned that man was Sabrina's father, who explained that Sabrina wasn't always like this—her growing psychic powers had warped her personality. Moved, Ash vowed to help her return to normal. He traveled to Lavender Town to find a Ghost-type Pokémon for help. Though he didn't capture one in a Poké Ball, a mischievous Haunter decided to follow him anyway. With Haunter's aid, Ash challenged Sabrina again—only for Haunter to vanish mid-battle! Left with no choice, Ash sent out Pikachu—and lost badly once more. Brock and Misty were turned into dolls again

. Just when Ash was about to share their fate, Sabrina's father reappeared to save him. He told Ash once more: Sabrina's heart was lost within her own power. Determined, Ash found the missing Haunter and returned for a third challenge. This time, Haunter didn't run. It floated right up to Sabrina—and started making faces, pulling pranks, and goofing off. For some reason, Sabrina's sense of humor was… unique.

When Haunter produced a cartoon bomb and blew them both into a sooty mess, Sabrina burst into uncontrollable laughter. Her Pokémon, Kadabra, linked to her emotions, collapsed laughing as well—completely unable to battle. And just like that—Ash won, earning his fourth Gym Badge in the most ridiculous way imaginable. Brock and Misty returned to normal, and their journey continued.
