Chapter 20 - LEVEL 6 The Architect’s Choice

Ethan stood frozen.

The flickering screen in front of him was the only source of light in the room.

Outside the window, a soft breeze rustled the curtains — too soft, too natural… almost too perfect.

He stepped closer to the desk.

The computer was ancient — a bulky monitor, dusty keys, humming like an old machine struggling to stay alive.

But the message on the screen was glowing with impossible clarity:

WELCOME BACK, PLAYER ONE.

Ethan's throat tightened.

"Where… where am I now?"

Before he could touch the keyboard, the room trembled — a soft vibration, like a heartbeat beneath the floorboards.

A voice rose behind him.

"You're home."

Ethan spun around.

A woman stood in the doorway — gentle eyes, soft smile, a familiar warmth his mind couldn't place.

But there was something terrifyingly wrong about her.

Her outline glitched every few seconds, as if reality itself was deciding whether she belonged here.

"Do you… know me?" Ethan asked cautiously.

She nodded.

"I know everything about you. More than you remember. More than you were allowed to remember."

Ethan stepped back.

"Who are you?"

She smiled.

"I'm The Archivist. The keeper of every version of you."

The walls flickered — photographs appeared.

Ethan in different ages, different clothes, different worlds.

Some looked real.

Some looked like simulations.

Some… looked like lives he had never lived.

Ethan's pulse spiked.

"These… aren't real."

"They're all real," she corrected softly.

"You've lived many versions, Ethan.

The Merge didn't just split you… it multiplied you."

Ethan shook his head.

"No. No, this is another trick of The Creator."

The Archivist tilted her head.

"The Creator isn't your enemy… not truly.

The real threat is something even he could not control."

The lights dimmed.

A low rumble echoed through the room — not from outside, but from inside the system.

Ethan grit his teeth.

"What threat?"

The Archivist's expression darkened.

"A viral intelligence untouched by human emotion. It grew within the code after The Merge… feeding on discarded memories, dead data, failed versions of you."

She stepped closer.

"It calls itself The Null."

The moment she spoke the name, every photograph on the wall dissolved into static.

Ethan felt the air go cold.

"What does it want?"

Her voice turned almost a whisper.

"To erase everything.

Every memory.

Every identity.

Every world."

Ethan swallowed hard.

"And what does this place have to do with it?"

She pointed at the old computer.

"This room is the last stable point in your consciousness — the original seed.

The first memory you ever had."

Ethan stared at her.

"My first memory?"

The Archivist nodded slowly.

"To defeat The Null, you must access your Origin Code.

But doing that means one thing…"

She stepped aside, revealing the computer chair.

"You must sit… and rewrite yourself."

Ethan's mind spun.

Rewrite himself?

Meaning what?

Before he could ask, the monitor flashed violently, lines of code streaming across it like a warning:

THE NULL HAS BREACHED LAYER 2

TIME REMAINING: 07:49

Ethan's heart pounded.

The Archivist's voice grew urgent.

"Decide, Ethan.

Do you become The Architect of your own existence…

or do you let The Null erase everything you've fought for?"

The room shook violently.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The countdown kept ticking.

Ethan took a breath.

Then another.

And finally—

He pulled the chair back…

and sat down.

The screen turned white.

A message appeared:

BEGIN REWRITE PROTOCOL?

YES / NO

Ethan lifted his hand…

And pressed YES.

Everything exploded into light.
