Hey, my name is Earl. Just Earl. We do not have any surnames. We don't belong anywhere. We live in the neutral zones. Okay, that's a lot of information for someone who doesn't know anything about this world. Let me tell you.
This is Zeloria, in 2091. A country full of monster. It is widely known that before 2019, this world was peaceful. Yes, there were wars, but it was peace for normal citizens. But things changed in 2019, monster appeared. Some came out of volcanoes, some came out of sea, some just fly over the sky. Later it was discovered there were portals in certain places from where these monsters come out. Some monsters were powerful. So powerful that they can't be harm by nuclear weapons too. But some were manageable, that's why military of normal people is still a thing today.
We also know that, they are very hostile to humans too. It was very tough to kill these monster because of the strength, but there was light at the end of the tunnel. Humanity found something which could help them survive in these ages. Awakening of abilities.
Awakening only happens once in your life and there is a procedure to do it. A human has to eat out the raw heart of a still alive monster. The stronger the monster the stronger you ability will be. In this world, the government is controlled by those who have awakens because they are superhuman. They can do things that can't be done by thousands. They are powerhouses that no one can oppose. But it is very tough and life threatening to become a Awaken. Most of the people who want to become an awaken die because they couldn't handle the power.
Normal people do not have surnames anymore. Only the awaken are allowed to have a surname. They are the only ones who is allowed to have houses. They are the only ones who are allowed to have meat. They are the only ones who is allowed to enjoy life while someone like us are rotting in these areas.
But I don't mind it. I am happy here. I have my ever screaming lovely Ma here with me. Well of course I would want to become a awaken, but I don't want to die and leave her alone.
My ma can be brash, but is a very gentle person. Well most of the people don't agree with me.
We live in the neutral area no.12. The most monster prone area, and that's why it has low rent.
I wore my everyday denim overalls on my scrawny body. My blue eyes were still the same and my light skin got tanned because of working under sunlight a lot. I back brushed my long brown hair and slapped my cheeks.
"You can do this, Earl!!! Today you are going to transport at least 20 monster corpse." I said to myself.
I went downstairs, only to met by a slap on the back of my head.

"Don't forget your lunch, Earl." Said my Ma and handed over a paper bag.
"Ok,ma!! I will try to come back earlier today. Take you medicines on time. And... I love you!!" I said while smiling at her.
I knew she was going to hit me again so I just turned and ran out of my house.
"Idiot." Earl's mom smiled.
Neutral area no. 12 was at the most outer part of the state, that means the monster areas are just beside our area. Though it is monster prone and there is constant battle, it is also very crowded because it is full of treasures like monster carcasses and there insides. Monster carcasses were mostly used in making armor for the awakens.
Just like normal people and awakens had a hierarchy, awakens also have a huge hierarchy. From level F being the losers of the awakens and level S being the Nation's pride. Though, those Level F have a more comfortable life than the normal people.
I came to the monster killing site, today it was only me and some 12 people there because the awakens who appointed us wanted smaller team to move around with them. It was common knowledge that awakens used normal people like us as baits but what can we do, this job pays a lot better than other jobs. We need to put food on the table too.
"Hey! Earl! Come here fast. We are starting our expedition."
Us humans do two types of expeditions. The Level F to Level C do the monster areas in the states and cities. Then the Level B to Level S explore the numerous portals from where the monsters come. The only moto of these expeditions are to kill those monsters as much as possible.
We were deep in the area with numerous monsters in every corner. But the group of Awakens where doing great. One of them had a sensory ability, one was on support, one was on tank and other was doing the damage. Well dont get it wrong, Level D onwards normally awakens do not need these type of tactics. They are way more powerful that these awakeners infront of me.
They were continuously using their powers, maybe trying to go up a level. The more you use you ability the powerful you ability gets. But overusing it can be... who am I kidding, they do not have any cons. It like they are truly favored by God.
We were transporting the monsters killed by the awakes in 2 or 3s. I may look scrawny but I do have the techniques and know how to handle the monster corpse. We were transporting the monsters wherever the awakens were going. Sometimes I also feel envy towards them but I am not just going to end my life for some powers.
"What the fuck is this? I thought you killed the serpent monster but now its regenerating!!!! Did you destroy its heart?!!?" One of the awakens said.
They were trying to kill a 10 feet tall serpent for a long time. They thought they succeeded. But, this serpent monster is different. It is regenerating out of nowhere and becoming stronger after every regeneration.
"We need baits!! We need a fucking bait!!!!" A female awaken said.
'Shit!! Why do I have to be in the front lines of the transporter's.' I thought.
"You!!! Asshat!! Come here and be the bait." A awaken said looking at me.
"But...sir..." I tried to reason with him.
"Do you want me kill you family, Motherfucker. These lowly people don't even know their place." The awaken said.
He grabbed my collar and threw me in front of the serpent monster.
'Fuck!!! I don't want to die. No!!!! Ma!!! I want to live. I want to live!!!!!' I thought while tossed in front of the serpent monster.
When I landed on the ground near the serpent monster.

When I landed, I looked up. The eye of the serpent were on me. I looked around me, hoping someone would run up to me and say 'let me be the sacrifice'. But, there was no one. Everyone ran away.
'No, no, no, nonononononononononon... I will live. I have to. I will live! I Will Live!! I WILL LIVE!!! I WILL LIVE!!!!' I thought.
"I WILL LIVE!!!!!" I screamed at the face of the serpent.
