Chapter 2 - The Girl Known As Demeter

(Third Person POV)

"Shadow Titans vary in size and height." Demeter said as they were in a cold and white room, her deep and husky voice filled the room, "We don't know much about them aside from their ability to influence Breach openings."

Everyone of the Chosen was sitting on reclinable chairs, some nurses were taking their blood, filling up bags as Markus and Demeter stood at the front of the room. They had moved to this room, as protocol. The young woman known as Demeter had finally decided to speak and brief them on what the DBG knows about the entities.

Mael was lying down, his arm extended outwards as a young woman was holding it, his blood flowing through the tubes and filling the bag. His bandages were still over his face, covering his blind eyes. He was listening carefully to what Demeter was saying.

"The Shadow Titans not only influence the openings, but they sometimes watch them." Demeter said, "They do not affect our world physically during the Black Sun Event. A theory surrounding them is that they only become visible during the Event, but they are on the planet at all times, unseen. We have not confirmed that."

"Aren't you communing with them?" the blue-haired young man asked, "Can't you ask them?"

Demeter looked at him, "What's your name?"

"Spike." he said

"Okay, Spike." Demeter placed her hands on her hips, "It is not as easy as it sounds. Communing with the Shadow Titans isn't about speaking words. As you saw in the image, they don't have heads. Which means that they don't have mouths. It is about making contact and implying that we need their aid."

"Have you done this before?" Spike asked, "Communing with them and making them help open the breaches?"

Markus cleared his throat, "Being that she is the only one that the DBG is aware of with an ability like this, the Global Board has constant use of her." She said, "She is heavily protected, even now. DT was only able to have access to her abilities."

"Be grateful." Demeter said with a scowl, "I have helped 7 cities over the years open their Breaches. This will mark my eighth Breach. But as Markus has stated, many things can go wrong."

"How does any of it work?" the brown-haired woman asked, "I mean, why do we struggle to open breaches? And why do other Dystopian Cities have an easier time?"

"When the First Black Sun Event happened, the Veil thinned and opened breaches." Demeter said, "In the process, the entire world was infused with Breach Energy, as we call it. You have already been told that. Because of that, the planet is infused and covered by a constant fluctuating field of dimensional energy that is unseen. Even when building a city over a Hot Spot, a location where the first Breaches opened, it doesn't guarantee absolute success. Since the Veil and the Breach Energy is constantly fluctuating, it is hard to open Breaches sometimes."

"I see...." the woman said

"What is your name?" Demeter asked her

"Cecilia." the woman said as the nurses finished with her

"Cecilia, you will see that during the Event, the spatial distortion will become clearer." Demeter said, "When opening Breaches, color appears. As you already know, the Black Sun Events make the entire world black and white; a Black Sun is shining upon us after all. Even indoors, reality itself follows this law. And when Breaches are opened, color is returned."

Mael slowly sat up as the nurses finished with him. He gently patted the spot where they drew blood from, which was covered in a bandage. He tilted his head to the side, listening to what Demeter was saying.

"Why are we getting our blood drawn?" Spike asked

"It is protocol." Markus said, "We take blood samples from Chosen."

"This is more than just samples." Spike said

"You'd do best not to worry about this until after the Event." Demeter said with a scowl

"I have a question." another young woman said, one with a distinct accent

She was thin and curvy, her jeans and white shirt giving her a simple look. She had black hair and squared bangs, two large, round glasses on her face, giving her asian face a distinct beautiful look.

Demeter looked at her, "And your name?"

"Suki." the woman said, "W-What happens when the Breach is successfully opened?"

"When the Breach is opened, all of you will cross it." Demeter said, "When crossed, the Breach releases an energy surge, which the DBG will harness and store. This will be converted for the City's energy reserves, giving New Haven a few more years' worth of pollution-free energy."

"So that's what this is about...." Spike murmured

"Yes. That is the truth." Demeter nodded, "That is what it is all about: solving the energy crisis. Breach Energy has always been harvested best from Breach Crossings. It is no different here."

"But...." Suki said softly, "What happens to us?"

"Ah yes." Demeter said, "When you cross and the Breach Energy Surge happens, all of you will be transported to the Distorted Godlands. During the crossing, your bodies will be flung through dimensional barriers, ripped apart and stitched back together to the molecular level. It is either painless or the most agonizing experience you'll ever have."

Markus nodded, "That is correct."

"When entering the Godlands, the risks of Breach Crossing is not over." Demeter continued, "Depending on where you'll end up, there is a high chance you could still die. You could either appear thousands of feet in the air or you'll appear at the bottom of a body of water, drowning. I will try my best to have the Shadow Titan manipulate the landing zones. Don't worry. Or worry. I don't really mind what you do."

Spike shuddered, "Shit..."

Cecilia raised her hand, "But.....what happens if we do cross and die....?" She asked, "I mean....I thought the risks of breaching were that our bodies would be destroyed and the crossing is unsuccessful."

"We'll know that you guys successfully Crossed when the Surge happens and your bodies aren't spat out in a bloody pulp." Demeter said with a serious expression, "Should that happen, the family members that are covered by the DBG's Insurance Program will be well taken care of."

"I believe it is time to let them know of their mission while inside." Markus said, "With you here, Demeter, I truly believe the Crossing will be successful."

"Of course." Demeter pointed at them, "Alright, all of you! It is time for you to know your parts in this mission! When the Energy Surge happens, that means it is a successful day for the DBG. But....there is something else you need to do."

This caused Mael to perk up, a bit intrigued by what she meant.

"In this world, The Black Sun Event is what allows us to open breaches." Markus started, "But in the Godlands, there is another event that causes the same thing, allowing you to return to our world."

"The Blood Moon." Demeter said, "When the Moon Bleeds, a portal that leads to our dimension is opened. Only those foreign to the Godlands can cross it, which makes it a perfect exit for you. Until that happens, you are to find Relics in the Godlands, items that will prove useful to this world. Collect them and return them to the DBG. In doing so, you will improve you and your family's standing with us."

"Standing?" Cecilia asked with a gulp

"Benefits will improve and your family will be given hefty sums of money should you pass away after the fact." Markus explained, "You need to return with Relics for that to happen. But even if you don't, your family is still in the program."

Mael tilted his head, "Of course."

Demeter looked at him, "And what's your name?"

"Mael." He said

"Mael, what happened to your face?" She asked, "Why is a blind man one of the Chosen, Markus?"

"His body has a proper amount of Breach Energy." Markus admitted, "He was not chosen without a reason."

"Hmph." Demeter said, "If he is blind in the Godlands, he will be a hindrance."

"Tch...." Mael said with an annoyed tone, "Don't you dare look down on me, little girl."

"Little girl?!" Demeter exclaimed with a scowl, "Young man, I am 25 years old!!"

"Quite the short one for your age." Mael retorted, a smirk on his face

"How can you even tell?!" Demeter scowled even more, "Can you not tell by my voice that I am such a mature young woman?!"

"What's with this guy?" Spike muttered as he stood up, "He's creeping me out."

"Mael's hearing is quite advanced." Markus said, "It could be an effect of his body's reaction to the Energy in him."

"Tch..." Demeter said before pointing at them, "Alright, say your goodbyes to your families! When the Event happens, all of you will be crossed no matter what!!"

"I wish you all good fortune!"
