Adrian's foot hit the edge of the rooftop barrier. For a split second he lost balance, his body tipping backward toward the open air behind him. The wind roared, swallowing Mia's scream as she rushed forward. Adrian's brother's hand stretched toward him—not to save him, but to push him the rest of the way. Adrian twisted his body at the last second, grabbing the metal railing with one hand. His grip slid dangerously. His fingers whitened from pressure. His brother took a step forward to finish what he started. "Don't," Mia shouted, her voice cracking from pure panic. She grabbed the nearest piece of metal—the heavy emergency wrench from beside the generator box—and held it in both trembling hands. Adrian's brother paused, his eyes flickering to the tool in her grip. "Move back," he said, his tone disturbingly calm. "This has nothing to do with you." "It has everything to do with me," Mia said. Her chest was tight, her limbs shaking uncontrollably. "Step away from him." Adrian's brother didn't listen. He moved another step toward Adrian. Mia swung the wrench toward the ground, letting it collide loudly with the concrete rooftop. The clang echoed across the open sky. "I won't let you touch him," she said. Adrian's brother slowly turned his head toward her. Something dark and dangerous sparked in his eyes. "Look at you," he said softly. "So scared. So weak. You think you can protect him?" Mia didn't lower the wrench. "I'm not letting you near him." Adrian tightened his grip on the railing. "Mia, don't come closer—stay back." "I'm not leaving you!" she shouted. Adrian's brother let out a short laugh. "This is exactly what I meant. Attachment. Dependence. She'll only ruin you." He took another step toward Adrian. Mia panicked. She ran forward and slammed the wrench against the metal pipe beside him. Sparks shot out. The sound was sharp. His brother stopped again, irritation flickering through his expression. But this was enough for Adrian. Using every bit of strength left, he swung his leg upward and planted his foot into his brother's chest, shoving him backward. Adrian pulled himself fully back onto the rooftop floor. He stumbled forward, breath ragged, nearly collapsing from the effort. Mia dropped the wrench and grabbed him instantly. "Adrian—Adrian, are you okay?" He exhaled shakily, sweat beading along his forehead. "I'm fine," he whispered, though he clearly wasn't. His brother regained balance, but this time the smile was gone. The amusement vanished entirely. Now there was only cold hatred in his eyes. "You just keep choosing her," he said quietly. "Why?" Adrian stepped in front of Mia, shielding her. "Because you're right," Adrian said. "I care about her." Mia froze. Her breath stopped completely. Adrian continued, voice low, steady, protective. "And that's exactly why I'm not letting you near her." His brother tilted his head. "Caring about people is what destroys you." "No," Adrian said. "Losing them is." That seemed to strike something inside his brother. His expression twisted. "You think you can save her? You couldn't save the last one." Adrian's jaw clenched. "Don't bring her into this." "Why? It's the truth. You failed her. You'll fail this one too." Mia grabbed Adrian's arm, feeling him shake with anger. "Don't listen," she whispered. "Please." Adrian's brother took slow steps toward them. "Let me prove it." Adrian pushed Mia behind him and faced his brother head-on. "You come one step closer and I swear—" "What?" his brother cut in. "You'll hurt me? You won't." Adrian didn't answer. His silence was enough. His brother took another step. Adrian moved instantly, grabbing him by the collar and slamming him into the concrete wall. "I'm done with your mind games," Adrian said. "You're not touching her." His brother laughed quietly. "You think you're the hero? You think protecting her makes you better than me?" "No," Adrian said. "It makes me human." His brother twisted violently out of his grip, pushing Adrian back. Adrian staggered. He raised his arm again, his expression darkening. Mia rushed forward and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Adrian, stop." He froze. She swallowed hard. "You're not like him. Don't let him turn you into something you're not." Adrian's brother smirked. "Softness. Weakness. That's all she gives you." Mia turned toward him. "And what do you give him? Fear? Guilt? Pain?" His eyes snapped toward her, sharp as a blade. "Careful." Mia stepped forward. Adrian immediately pulled her back. "Mia—what are you doing?" "Trying to stop this," she whispered. Adrian's brother stared at her quietly for a moment. Then he said something she didn't expect. "You want to save him? Fine. Save him from you." Adrian lunged again but Mia held him tightly. "Adrian—stop! Please." He froze mid-motion, chest heaving. His brother took advantage of his hesitation and darted toward the rooftop door. Adrian grabbed Mia's hand and pulled her behind him. "Stay close," he said. But his brother didn't attack again. He simply reached the door, turned, and stared at them with a blank expression. "This isn't over," he said. "You haven't fixed anything. You've only delayed it." Then he disappeared through the stairwell. The door slammed shut. Silence swallowed the roof. Mia's legs finally gave out, and she sank to the ground, trembling. Adrian rushed to her, dropping to his knees. "Mia—are you hurt? Did he touch you?" "No," she whispered. "Are you hurt?" Adrian exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "I'm fine. I almost fell, but I'm fine." Her eyes filled with tears she didn't realize she was holding. "I thought— I thought I was going to lose you." Adrian cupped her face with both hands. "I'm right here." "He almost—" "Mia," he whispered, "look at me. I'm right here." She looked into his eyes, shaken to the core. "Adrian… he isn't going to stop." "I know." "Then what do we do?" He didn't look away. "We don't run," Adrian said. "We end this." "How?" He took a breath, steadying himself. "I have a plan." Mia's heart pounded. "What plan?" Adrian didn't answer immediately. Instead he pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly against him, his heartbeat loud against her ear. "Whatever happens next," he whispered, "I won't let him take you from me." Mia trembled in his arms. For the first time since this nightmare began… she felt the truth of those words. He wouldn't let go. Not now. Not ever.
