Chapter 11 - The Forgotten Forge

---

Lianna led Kael away from the glowing fungal growths and ancient, polished wood of the main Sanctuary structures, deeper into the Ironwood's forgotten corners. The path descended sharply, the air growing thick, damp, and cold.

"The Forgotten Forge was used centuries ago by the Coven to smelt metals for their ritual artifacts," Lianna explained, her voice echoing in the growing darkness. "It's deep beneath a collapsed mining shaft, shielded by layers of dense, magnetic ore. The Witches' Essence sensors cannot penetrate it. It is the perfect place for your... Shadow training."

Kael followed her into a narrow, unstable tunnel. The only light came from the faint glow of Lianna's Essence-charged staff. He could feel the pressure of the earth and the metal ore around them, a heavy, oppressive blanket that muffled sound and light.

"Why are you helping me, Lianna?" Kael asked, his voice low and steady. "You called me a time bomb. You know my Essence consumes your magic. You have every reason to fear me, not assist me."

Lianna stopped, turning to face him in the half-light. Her violet eyes were intense. "I am a student of Essence, Kael. And your System is the most unique Essence phenomenon I have ever witnessed. Fear is ignorance. Knowledge is power. Maeve sees you as an asset; I see you as a revolutionary discovery. I am helping you because you are a source of knowledge."

She gave him a sharp, challenging look. "And because you humiliated Aris, the arrogant fool. He needed to be put in his place. That was a bonus."

She then pushed open a heavy, rusted metal door, revealing the Forge.

The chamber was huge, a cavernous space carved deep into the rock, lined with ancient, blackened machinery and a massive, cold furnace. The air was dry and smelled of burnt metal and stale magic. This was the perfect crucible for Shadow Construct.

"This is your training ground," Lianna announced. "The metal walls will absorb any residual Shadow Essence. You can practice your solidification here without triggering the Coven's deep-earth sensors."

Kael nodded, appreciating the strategic advantage. He needed to master his Tier 2 skill, Shadow Construct, before the next political challenge or the looming Vampire threat reached the Ironwood's gates.

He closed his eyes, accessing his Shadow Essence Core (MANA/ESSENCE: 10). The Essence was cold, dense, and instantly responsive to his mental commands.

[SHADOW CONSTRUCT (TIER 2): INITIATE TRAINING PROTOCOL.]

Kael focused on an empty space on the stone floor. He mentally commanded his Shadow Essence to flow out, not as a gaseous cloud, but as a rigid, solid shape.

A thick, dark spike, about two feet long, instantly materialized on the floor. It was pure black, matte, and utterly devoid of reflection. It looked like obsidian, yet it was made of solid essence.

Lianna let out a small, amazed sound. "It's real! It has mass!"

Kael knelt, touching the construct. It was hard, cold, and possessed the raw, unyielding texture of metal. He could feel the connection it was an extension of his own physical body, imbued with his stats.

[SHADOW CONSTRUCT STRENGTH: 25. ENDURANCE: 34.]

[ESSENCE COST: 10 UNITS.]

He had only 10 Essence units in his core. One mistake, and he would drain his core entirely, leaving him vulnerable.

"I need to make this efficient," Kael stated. He looked around the Forge. "Lianna, I need targets. Something durable that can withstand repeated, high-impact force."

Lianna pointed to a series of heavy, rusted anvils chained to the floor. "Those were forged by the First Witches. They're nearly indestructible."

Kael stood before the nearest anvil, his pale gold eyes focused. He initiated the Shadow Construct again, this time forming a short, heavy war hammer in his right hand. The hammer was cold, heavy, and perfectly balanced.

He raised the hammer and slammed it down onto the ancient anvil.

KLAANG!

The sound was deafening, amplified by the metal-lined cavern. The force of the blow, powered by Kael's Strength 25 stat, caused the entire Forge to vibrate. The anvil shifted slightly on its thick chains, but the metal held.

Kael examined his hammer. The Shadow Construct was still perfect, undamaged by the impact.

"Incredible," Lianna whispered. "You can manifest any physical object and imbue it with your own Lycan-level strength. This power is terrifying, Kael."

"It's necessary," Kael corrected, already initiating the next swing.

For the next two hours, Kael practiced relentlessly. He realized the limitation of the skill was not his mind, but his meager Essence core. Each swing of the hammer cost 10 Essence units. After one complex construct, his core was dry.

"I need a source," Kael finally said, collapsing onto a cold stone bench, panting. "I need to refill my Essence core quickly. The Wild Mana Core is too slow, and I can't risk exposing myself by consuming other witches' magic."

Lianna sat beside him, her brow furrowed in concentration. She had been observing his technique and calculating his costs.

"The problem isn't your core size, Kael; it's the Essence Consumption Rate," Lianna explained, using her theoretical knowledge. "Your System is designed to convert hostile magic, which is inefficient. We need to find a way to feed it pure, non-hostile energy."

She then had a flash of inspiration. "The Nexus Fragment! When we transferred the Anchoring energy from the main stone, Elder Maeve used a secondary, smaller stone the Nexus Fragment. That stone is saturated with the purest, *neutral* Wild Mana Essence."

Lianna quickly left the Forge and returned a minute later with the small, dark green focus stone the same one Maeve had used to temporarily anchor the core.

"This fragment is currently stored in my quarters. Maeve uses it to monitor the core. It holds Essence, but it is neutral, not chaotic like the main core. It shouldn't trigger your System's defensive consumption."

[WARNING: ESSENCE FRAGMENT DETECTED. NEUTRAL ENERGY SIGNATURE.]

Kael reached out and touched the small, cold stone. He commanded his System to begin a gentle, non-aggressive transfer.

The sensation was entirely different. Instead of a painful, hostile collision, Kael felt a smooth, calming flow of pure, neutral Essence pouring into his Shadow Core.

[ESSENCE CORE RECHARGE INITIATED. RATE: 20 ESSENCE UNITS PER MINUTE.]

Kael's core instantly refilled. He felt the cold, familiar power return, stabilizing his trembling muscles.

"This is it," Kael murmured, a genuine sense of relief washing over him. "I can train continuously now."

For the remainder of the evening, Kael focused on mastering the Shadow Construct skill, creating intricate, complex shapes. He formed a giant, black shield, then dissolved it instantly. He created three short swords, wielded them for a few seconds, and made them vanish.

Lianna watched, her hand resting on the Nexus Fragment, regulating the flow of energy. She was not only Kael's handler; she was becoming his Essence Battery, his crucial source of continuous power.

Meanwhile, outside the safe confines of the Forgotten Forge, the humiliated apprentice Aris was not idle. Stripped of his rank and demoted to a simple gatherer, his fury was absolute, but carefully hidden.

He knew he could not defeat Kael physically or logically. He needed a weapon outside the Coven's laws a weapon from the outside world.

Aris walked to the deepest, most isolated section of the Ironwood Witches' perimeter the border closest to the Vampire territories, where the Wards were thinnest.

He performed a highly illegal, ancient ritual a spell of Magical Scent Marking. He used a highly volatile Essence compound to mark Kael's Essence signature, not with a scent the Witches could track, but one that only a Vampire's preternatural senses could detect.

Aris knew the Vampires had a Shadow Weaver on their side, a traitor Witch. He just needed to send a clear message: The Omega is vulnerable, and he is here.

He did not speak. He did not use Coven magic. He simply used his knowledge of Essence to create a small, invisible trail of Kael's unique, cold Essence signature, leading directly from the Sanctuary's outer perimeter to the Vampires' observation post on the bridge.

"Enjoy your temporary peace, Omega," Aris muttered to himself, his face contorted in a sneer. "The Lycans failed. Now, let's see how you fare against House Vladislaf's full wrath."

Aris completed the ritual and quickly retreated, his action complete. He had sealed Kael's fate, believing he was restoring the Coven's honor.

Back in the Forgotten Forge, Kael was reaching a new peak of control. He stood amidst his creations three perfectly formed Shadow Essence dummies, each possessing the Endurance of a Beta.

[SHADOW CONSTRUCT SKILL LEVEL UP: 2 -> 3.]

[SHADOW CONSTRUCT EFFICIENCY: 5 ESSENCE UNITS per Construct.]

The cost had been halved! Kael could now create two constructs for the previous cost of one. His growth rate was exponential, fueled by the neutral Essence provided by Lianna.

"I'm done, Lianna," Kael said, dissolving the constructs. "I can manifest physical matter instantly. Now I need to learn strategy how to use this against a Lycan or a Trueblood."

Lianna put the Nexus Fragment away, her face tired but satisfied. "You have achieved in one day what takes us years. Now, we return. And tomorrow, we start on Essence Cloaking strategy how to maintain the camouflage in combat."

As they left the Forge, Kael felt a sudden, familiar chill not the comforting cold of his Shadow Core, but an external, predatory coldness. His senses, heightened by his massive Agility and System Core, screamed a silent warning.

[WARNING: HOST SIGNATURE DETECTED BY EXTERNAL PREDATOR. ESSENCE CLOAK INTEGRITY AT RISK.]

"What is it?" Lianna asked, sensing his sudden tension.

"I'm not sure," Kael replied, his eyes narrowing. "But someone just knocked on the door of the Ironwood, and they are not here for peace."

Kael knew instantly: Aris had made his move. The brief peace was over. The Vampires had been called.
