Maeve looked at the chaos, then at Kael, her face a mask of silent awe and fear.
"We owe you our lives, Kael Vale," Maeve said, her voice barely a whisper. "You have saved the Ironwood."
Kael leaned heavily against the black wall, his voice rough. "Aris marked me, Elder. The Vampires knew exactly where to strike. We have a traitor inside the Sanctuary."
Maeve's eyes turned cold, settling on the two captive Vampires. "We will find the traitor, Kael. But first, you need to tell me how you learned to cage Vampires with mere thought."
Kael pushed himself off the Shadow Wall. He felt the intense exhaustion of draining his core, but the adrenaline of the fight still coursed through his veins. Lianna, now freed from the Shadow Wall, rushed to his side, handing him the Nexus Fragment.
He placed it against his Core, feeling the familiar, stabilizing flow of neutral Essence instantly restoring his power.
[ESSENCE CORE: 10/10. RECHARGED.]
"The Shadow Wall was a *Shadow Construct*a physical object solidified from my Shadow Essence," Kael explained, his voice gaining strength as his core refilled. "My Essence is hostile to all other forms of magic, including the Essence of the Vampires. The Chains and the Wall were simply an extension of that hostility."
Maeve, a Witch Elder who had witnessed centuries of magical conflict, stared at the two shrieking Vampires struggling uselessly in the matte-black chains.
"A defense that becomes offensive mass," Maeve murmured, processing the unprecedented power. "A unique ability, Kael. It is your shield, and our weapon."
Anya, the Sentinel, knelt before the struggling captives. "Elder, what of the prisoners? And the accusation? The Vampire Commander, Cassian, called Kael a *Void Lord*."
Maeve's gaze returned to Kael. "The name Void Lord is a myth, Kael. A term used by the First Races for creatures born of pure anti-mana beings that consumed all magic. It is highly derogatory. However, it confirms their belief that your System is not merely an Essence device; it is a fundamental threat to their existence."
She then turned to Anya. "Anya, take these two to the Deep Chambers. They will be our leverage against the Vladislaf and Volkov Houses. Interrogate them on the Sanguine Key and the Shadow Weaver, Seraphina. We need to know where she is and who paid her."
Maeve then focused her attention on Kael's second accusation. "The traitor. You are certain Aris marked you?"
"He was the only one with motive and opportunity," Kael confirmed, the memory of Aris's scorn clear in his mind. "He used a technique based on Essence Scent Marking a passive, pheromonal trail that bypasses the Coven's active wards. He targeted the only weakness the Wards have: **biological scent tracking**."
Maeve's face was etched with cold fury. Betrayal within the Coven was the ultimate sin. "Anya, after you secure the prisoners, organize a silent search party. Find Aris. Do not bring him before the Coven Judgment. Bring him before me."
The Sentinel nodded, her eyes glittering with righteous anger. The Coven was swift and brutal when its core harmony was threatened.

The next day, the Ironwood Sanctuary was quiet, but the air remained charged with tension. The Vampire patrols had retreated slightly, wary of the captured Lieutenants and the terrifying new defense mechanism they had witnessed.
Kael spent the morning back in the Mana Anchor Chamber, using the Nexus Fragment to rapidly stabilize his core. He was no longer battling the Wild Mana; he was simply using the neutral fragment to meditate and solidify his Tier 2 power.
Lianna remained his constant companion, her role shifting from handler to a mixture of apprentice, strategist, and nervous ally. Her awe of his System was now complete.
"Elder Maeve wants to see you in the Chamber of Essence Weaving," Lianna informed him late that afternoon. "She has an update on the search for Aris, and more importantly, a new task."
Kael left the chamber and followed Lianna through the winding paths. The Chamber of Essence Weaving was not a simple room; it was a vast, open-air grove where massive, glowing runes were etched into the rock, constantly pulling pure Essence from the earth.
Maeve was there, standing over a scrying pool that shimmered with dark light. Anya stood beside her, silent and stone-faced.
"The search is complete, Kael," Maeve announced, her voice devoid of emotion. "Aris was found near the perimeter. He confessed to the marking ritual under interrogation. He believed he was restoring Coven integrity by removing a destabilizing element."
"And his fate?" Kael asked.
"The Coven has dealt with him," Maeve simply stated, her refusal to elaborate confirming the severity of the sentence. The Ironwood Witches did not forgive internal betrayal.
Maeve then focused on the scrying pool. The pool shifted, showing an image of the Vampire Shadow Weaver, Seraphina, kneeling before a massive, opulent Vampire lord.
"Seraphina is now confirmed to be working directly for Lord Silas Volkov the Head of the rival Volkov House," Maeve explained. "Silas is not Vladislaf. He is subtle, patient, and driven by power. He did not care about the Sanguine Key; he only cares about the Ancient Nexus."
Maeve looked up, her expression deadly serious. "Kael, the Nexus is close to being stabilized. But Silas Volkov knows that if we achieve full integration, we will gain access to the knowledge of the First Races knowledge that could destroy the Vampires' Bloodline hierarchy."
"What is Silas Volkov's next move?" Kael asked.
"He is preparing for an Essence Blockade," Maeve revealed. "He plans to send his most powerful Lieutenants to strategic points around the Ironwood border. They will use specialized Essence Dampening magic to create a field that cuts off the Ironwood Sanctuary from the global Essence flow. If they succeed, our Wards will fail in hours, and the Wild Mana Core will destabilize and explode."
The threat was existential. The survival of the entire Sanctuary, and the city's magical balance, depended on preventing this Essence Blockade.
Maeve looked at Kael with a calculating intensity. "We need to stop Silas Volkov before he can establish the blockade. We need to strike first, and we need to strike hard, using a force they cannot comprehend. We need to use you."
[NEW URGENT QUEST: ESSENCE BLOCKADE COUNTER.]
[OBJECTIVE: Infiltrate the Volkov Estate and neutralize Lord Silas Volkov's main Essence Dampening Lieutenants before the Essence Blockade can be established (48 hours time limit). Success is required for Coven Survival.]
[REWARD: 20x OMEGA POINTS; Unlock Tier 3 Skill Tree; ACCESS TO ANCIENT NEXUS LORE.]
Twenty Omega Points and the Tier 3 Skill Tree! This was the greatest reward the System had ever offered. Kael knew he had to accept.
"I accept the mission, Elder. But I will not go alone," Kael stated. "Lianna will come with me. She knows the Coven's magic, and I require her Essence knowledge and her Nexus Fragment to maintain continuous Shadow Construct."
Lianna looked surprised, but instantly nodded her assent. She knew the mission's importance.
Maeve hesitated, then gave a rare, stern nod. "Very well. Lianna will be your tactical support. But you need more than physical defense. You need an offensive ability that can break the Vampire's Essence Bonds without draining your core entirely."
Maeve led Kael to a large, ancient rune etched into the center of the grove a rune glowing with potent, green light.
"This is the *Rune of Echoing Life*," Maeve explained. "It is an amplifier. When Essence is poured into it, it magnifies the effect. I will temporarily amplify your *Inner Shadow* passive skill."
Maeve placed her hand on the rune and began chanting an ancient, deep-throated melody. Anya and Lianna joined her, pouring their powerful, combined Essence into the rune.
The green light intensified, surging toward Kael. He felt his Inner Shadow passive skill the cold sheath around his core being stretched, amplified, and reformed by the massive wave of Witches' Essence.
[INNER SHADOW PASSIVE SKILL EVOLVING...]
[NEW PASSIVE SKILL UNLOCKED: SHADOW ECHO.]
[DESCRIPTION: All hostile Essence that impacts the Host's body is not only consumed but is also re-emitted as a short-range, Essence-draining shockwave against the aggressor. COST: 0. ESSENCE GENERATION: HIGH.]
The Shadow Echo passive skill was a game-changer. Any Vampire or Lycan that hit him would not only have their attack consumed but would also be hit by an Essence-draining shockwave. Kael had just become the perfect counter to Essence-heavy combatants.
"The amplification will last for forty-eight hours the time we have before the blockade," Maeve warned, exhausted by the spell. "Kael, you are our only weapon. Go. And bring me the head of Silas Volkov's operation."
Kael looked at Lianna. They were no longer student and handler; they were partners in a high-stakes, cross-faction infiltration mission.
"Lianna, we need to move fast," Kael said, his voice calm and resolute. "Show me the fastest path out of the Ironwood and into the Volkov territory."
