Chapter 23 - Shadows in the Night

The darkness seemed to press in around them as Lyrein's words sank in. The Michelsons were coming for her, and she needed to be ready.

Mia's mind was racing as she walked back to her room, her thoughts whirling with questions and doubts. How could she protect her friends? What if she failed?

As she reached her door, she noticed a figure standing in the shadows. Her heart skipped a beat as she recognized the figure - it was a woman with long, dark hair and piercing green eyes.

"Who are you?" Mia asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

The woman stepped forward, her eyes glinking with a hint of mischief. "I'm someone who's been watching you, Mia Alden. I have a message for you."

Mia's instincts were on high alert, but she nodded for the woman to continue.

The woman's smile was like a whisper of silk. "The Michelsons aren't the only ones who know about you, Mia. There are others, powerful others, who are watching you, waiting for you to make your move."

Mia's heart was racing now, her mind reeling with possibilities. What others? What move?

The woman leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper. "Be careful, Mia. The night is full of shadows, and not all of them are friendly."

With that, the woman disappeared into the darkness, leaving Mia staring after her, her heart pounding in her chest.

What did it mean? And who was the mysterious woman?

Mia knew, as she closed her eyes and tried to process the strange encounter, that she wouldn't be able to shake the feeling of being watched, of being pulled into a world of danger and uncertainty.

The night seemed to grow darker, the shadows deepening and twisting around her. Mia knew she had to be brave, to face whatever lay ahead, but the darkness seemed to be closing in, making it hard to breathe.

Mia took a deep breath, trying to shake off the feeling of unease that had settled over her. She knew she couldn't let the mysterious woman's words get to her, not now, when she needed to be focused.

She turned to head back to her room, but her eyes caught on a piece of paper on the floor. She picked it up, her heart racing as she recognized the handwriting.

"Meet me at the old oak tree in the garden at midnight. Come alone."

Mia's mind was racing as she read the note again, her heart pounding in her chest. Who could have written this? And what did they want?

She knew she had to be careful, that she couldn't just rush into something without thinking it through. But a part of her was curious, and she knew she had to go.

Mia glanced at the clock on her wall, her eyes widening as she saw the time. It was already 11:45 PM. She had to hurry if she was going to make it to the meeting on time.

She quickly grabbed her phone and texted Kai, telling him to meet her at the old oak tree, but not to come unless she called for him. She knew she could trust Kai, and she needed someone to have her back, just in case.

With her phone in hand, Mia slipped out of her room and made her way to the garden, the darkness seeming to swallow her whole as she disappeared into the night.

As she walked, the silence was oppressive, the only sound the soft rustling of leaves beneath her feet. Mia's senses were on high alert, her heart pounding in her chest as she approached the old oak tree.

And then, she saw her - the mysterious woman from earlier, standing beneath the branches of the tree, her eyes glinking with an otherworldly light.

"Welcome, Mia," the woman said, her voice like a whisper of silk. "I've been waiting for you."
