Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Threads of Fate

Akari and the others waited for Inuyasha. When he arrived, he looked at Akari and said.

"Thank you." Akari nodded.

"Kikyou gave me this, she said you could use it". Inuyasha gave her an arrow.

"It has soil from Onigumo's cave spread onto it. She said it should be effective against Naraku". Akari took it and thought she would investigate the use of soil from the dead for protection or attack. Until now, she only tried to use the former, with the little black's mother. But with this arrow, she would experience the attack.

"Thanks, I'll use it wisely". She definitely would.

Naraku killed the bird demon and opened the way, and they entered the grave of Inuyasha's father. After a difficult fight, they took the fragment—at least for now—and Akari finally could use Kikyou's arrow when Inuyasha and Sesshōmaru attacked Naraku.

Akari noticed the difference when she used it. The intensity of feelings was what made it so strong. The feelings of Kikyou and Onigumo. This was a new way to complement the use of the spiritual power, something Akari didn't consider before. It was fascinating.

She had more time to reflect and investigate after Naraku used the rats to try to lure Kikyou out of her hiding place. Sango and Miroku were slightly injured, so they suggested Akari return home while they recovered.

Akari accepted. It was a shame she didn't have soil from the dead to investigate and used for attacks as Kikyou did. However, thanks to that setback, she could improve the quality of the barrier around the mountain. After all, the wish of a mother to protect her son couldn't be underestimated. Akari researched the creation of Shikigami. They didn't need much for creation—only hair or blood, but the spiritual power had to be carefully selected. Because essentially, they were made of a part of you, but they weren't yourself.

Three days later, she created her first Shikigami, but it was a little weak, so it was in animal form—a butterfly.

"Well, it is cute, don't you think, little black?" Akari said, patting him.

She watched the butterfly flying around the egg and said.

"Little black, don't even think about eating it". Akari knew it probably wasn't possible, but when she remembered the scene she'd witnessed when she arrived a few days ago. There were so many bones in the cave, so she couldn't help but say it.

The next day, Akari left the mountain and rejoined Inuyasha and the others. They headed to Gakusanjin, a demon in the form of a mountain. He explained to them that Naraku had stolen a protective stone called Furyouheki. This allowed him to stay as a mountain and erase his demonic energy. Protecting him. When Akari heard that, her eyes sparkled. Seriously, she considered for a moment stealing that protective stone from Naraku and giving it to little black. But finally, she decided against it. If Naraku or anyone noticed it, both little black and she probably would be eliminated by the world's consciousness.

However, it would probably be wise to take at least a piece of it, because the next time would be chaotic. Akari was right. Hakudoushi, Kagura, Kohaku, Goryomaru, and the baby with Naraku's heart betrayed him.

Hakudoshi was absorbed by Miroku's Wind Tunnel and Kagura was murdered by Naraku. When they arrived at the field of flowers where she died, Inuyasha asked Sesshōmaru if Kagura suffered before died. Silently, Akari gave Kagura's soul a little of her spiritual power, so that she would have the opportunity to live a better life in her next existence. A payment for the help she'd given them.

Sango and Kohaku decided to return to their village, and Akari and the others went with them. Akari told Inuyasha that she had seen something in Midoriko's corpse, and he decided to stay in case something happened, or that's what he said. Really, he went to meet with Kikyou, and Akari made sure that a Shikigami followed them silently. Akari now, more than ever needed information.

"Kikyou, are you using the soul of Midoriko?" Inuyasha asked.

"My wound has widened again. I need Midoriko's soul to treat it. It could be because Midoriko and I are two people with similar souls". Kikyou said.

Akari, who was hearing the conversation, thought, 'Alike souls, eh?' That's interesting. Akari didn't believe it was a coincidence. Perhaps the original female protagonist was the reincarnation of Kikyou, and Kikyou was the reincarnation of Midoriko. Or at least Kikyou is related to her. After all, there were so many priestesses in the world, but only Kikyou's soul was like Midoriko's soul. It was too convenient.

"You cannot defeat Naraku with a sword. Inuyasha, his body and soul need to be destroyed; probably, only the Shikon jewel was capable of doing that". Kikyou said.

"But wait, what about Kohaku?" Inuyasha asked.

Kikyou only said. "Naraku should be purified with the jewel; only I can do it. It's not the time to doubt."Then she left, and so did Kohaku.

Akari ordered the Shikigami to return, and she understood now why the Shikon Jewel was feared by the original female protagonist, and not by Kikyou. Between Kagome and Kikyou, probably, Kagome was more similar to Midoriko than Kikyou. That's the reason why only the reincarnation of Kikyou was destined to replace Midoriko. How ironic it was.
