Chapter 154 - CHAPTER 154

The research facility was finally left behind without another word.

Their footsteps echoed clearly through the long corridor that had just witnessed great change.

No one looked back.

Not because they didn't care.

But because they knew whatever was left there had changed far too much to be simply understood.

The outside air felt different as the metal door opened.

Lighter.

Yet it brought no sense of relief.

The morning sky was already bright, pale blue stretching wide, as if the world beyond was unaware of the threat slowly rising.

Daniel walked faster toward the car.

His hands were busy bringing up the navigation system.

"Coordinates for the west have been entered," he said shortly.

Leonard Graves stood still for a moment before getting in the vehicle.

He stared at the complex one more time, then smiled faintly.

"That place should be destroyed."

Richard Blackwood replied without looking back.

"Not yet."

Ethan said nothing.

He got straight into the front seat.

His gaze was fixed ahead.

But his thoughts were far beyond the road they were about to take.

The engine roared to life.

The car drove away from the remote area.

Tires screeched softly as they turned from the dirt road onto the main asphalt.

The first few seconds were quiet.

Only the sound of the engine and wind flowing through the window gaps could be heard.

Daniel spoke at last.

"It's about a two-hour drive if the roads are clear."

Leonard leaned back in the rear seat.

"We won't be having a peaceful trip, will we?"

There was no answer.

Because everyone knew what it would be

Ethan closed his eyes for a moment.

Not to rest.

But to feel the direction.

The subtle wave was back.

Stronger than before.

Like a call that couldn't be ignored.

He slowly opened his eyes.

"Our heading is correct."

Richard glanced over briefly.

"How far?"

Ethan replied softly.

"Getting closer."

The journey continued.

The city slowly faded behind them.

Tall buildings gave way to open fields and long, empty roads.

The sky grew brighter.

Yet the atmosphere inside the car remained tense.

Daniel drove with complete focus.

Every so often he glanced at Ethan, trying to read the man's condition.

But it was not easy.

Ethan was now like a puzzle that no longer had clear clues.

Leonard finally broke the silence.

"So, we're heading to another node that's probably more active, more dangerous, and possibly more unstable."

He shrugged.

"Sounds like a great idea."

Daniel sighed.

"We don't have many choices."

Richard remained quiet.

But his eyes kept watching Ethan through the windshield.

As if confirming something.

Several minutes passed without a sound.

Then.

Ethan suddenly spoke,

"Stop."

Daniel hit the brakes immediately.

The car came to a halt in the middle of the empty road.

"What is it?"

Ethan opened the door.

"Here."

Leonard raised an eyebrow.

"We haven't even arrived yet."

Ethan offered no explanation.

He got out of the car and walked to the side of the road.

Dry earth stretched wide.

No buildings.

No signs of activity.

Only an open field with a few scattered trees.

Daniel got out, confused.

"What do you feel?"

Ethan stood still.

His eyes were fixed on the horizon.

"Something's underneath."

Silence.

Leonard got out too.

"Under what? This ground?"

Ethan nodded.

"This isn't the main location…"

he paused for a moment.

"…it's a path."

Richard finally got out of the car.

His steps were steady.

"Underground access."

Ethan looked at him.

"Yes."

Daniel immediately scanned the area around them.

"If this is access, there must be a hidden entrance."

Leonard started walking along the area.

"Let's search."

For several minutes they spread out.

Scanning the ground, checking the surface, looking for even the smallest irregularity.

Until.

Daniel called out softly.

"Over here!"

Everyone gathered quickly.

Behind a low bush, a metal plate was clearly embedded in the ground.

It was almost invisible if not for careful observation.

Leonard knelt down.

Tapped its surface.

"Solid."

Richard looked around.

"This isn't an ordinary facility."

Ethan stepped forward.

He placed his hand on the plate.

For a moment nothing happened.

a faint mechanical sound could be heard.

Click.

The plate slowly shifted open.

Revealing a path downward.

Metal stairs were visible, leading into darkness.

Daniel swallowed.

"Great… just great."

Leonard smiled faintly.

"I've always liked secret doors."

Richard said firmly,

"We go down."

No one argued.

Ethan led the way.

His steps were steady as he descended the stairs.

The air below felt colder.

More damp.

And heavier.

Automatic lights turned on one by one as they went down.

A narrow corridor stretched underground.

Metal walls.

Their footsteps echoed softly.

Daniel whispered,

"This place… it's active."

Leonard nodded.

"I can feel it too."

Ethan kept walking.

Without hesitation.

As if he already knew the way.

They rounded several corners.

The corridor went deeper.

And finally.

they reached a large room.

Bigger than expected.

Yet unlike the previous facility.

No prominent modern equipment.

No large screens.

Only a massive structure in the center of the room.

Older.

Rougher.

Yet… alive.

The same blue light pulsed from within it.

But it was not stable.

Wilder.

More aggressive.

Daniel stopped.

"This… is different."

Leonard narrowed his eyes.

"More primitive."

Richard stared seriously.

"And more dangerous."

Ethan stepped forward.

But this time.

he stopped a few meters before getting close.

His eyes narrowed.

"Something's wrong."

The flow of energy moved erratically.

Like something trying to get out.

Or break free from control.

Daniel spoke quickly,

"We need to be careful."

Leonard nodded.

"I don't want to touch anything just yet."

Richard moved to stand beside Ethan.

"What do you feel?"

Ethan replied softly,

"This… isn't like the first one."

He stared at the core.

"This one… isn't waiting."

Tense silence fell.

a faint cracking sound could be heard.

Everyone froze.

The blue light pulsed faster.

Brighter.

Daniel stepped back one pace.

"This isn't good."

Leonard took a long breath.

"I have a bad feeling about this."

Ethan remained standing.

His eyes were locked on the core.

His voice was low.

But firm.

"It won't stay quiet."

Richard got ready immediately.

"We contain it now."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

He took one step forward.

"We're too late."

In the next moment

the light exploded.

Harsher.

Wilder.

And something began to emerge from within it.

Not a clear shape.

Not an object.

Yet it was enough to make everyone realize

they were no longer facing something that could be explained by simple logic.

And whatever it was.

had just awakened.
