Chapter 8 - Justice

Once the robber was found, the news spread like wildfire. The criminal who went by "Fuse", was revealed to be a high ranking member of a local gang responsible for robberies and murders around that area.

People started talking, completely confused as to how someone could break the arms and legs of an armed gang member and also tape something to him.

The criminal hadn't spoken a word since the moment he was found, the note was the only clue the police and people had to who did this.

While all this was happening, Sebastian was sleeping in, oblivious to what his actions had caused.

His sleep was interrupted by a loud knocking on his door, waking him up immediately.

Sebastian cursed under his breath and saw that Matthew was the one knocking.

His mood lightened. He opened the door and Matthew walked into his apartment without saying a word.

"Sebastian." He said.

"Yeah, what's up?"

"What's up? You've been ignoring us these past few days and we've all seen these crazy things on the news!" Matthew cried.

Sebastian wasn't annoyed, for some reason he wanted to speak and tell Matthew everything.

Before Sebastian could speak, Matthew spoke out again.

"Sebastian, we've been friends for a long time. I don't know what's happening to you, but I want to know! If this involves us I want to know! Emily and Katherine also want some answers. Please tell us what's going on with you."

Sebastian told Matthew to sit down.

Matthew did as he was told and sat facing Sebastian, worry plaguing his face.

"Matthew, please don't tell anyone else other than Emily and Katherine about this, okay?"

"Fine. I won't tell anyone else."

"Look, I have this… ability. I got it ever since I went to that empty field."

"Ability? What ability?"

"I don't know a lot about it myself, I'm still learning how to use it, but if I'm not mistaken I think I can control the "truth" of things.

"What are you even saying? Make some sense, Sebastian."

Sebastian tilted his head down.

"I had a dream, I thought it wasn't anything important at first, but it's happened twice already. In it I've spoken to myself and it's told me about this truth."

Matthew stared silently at Sebastian.

"I don't know what this truth means exactly but I can change things by speaking a certain way. I can prove it to you."

Matthew started to get worried about what Sebastian was going to do.

As he thought about what Sebastian could do, he suddenly saw him float up from his chair. To say Matthew was shocked was an understatement.

He tried speaking but his mouth failed him. All he could do was watch as his friend broke all previously known logic right in front of him.

"Apparently, this power works on other people if I look at them too," Sebastian added.

Matthew was so stunned that he completely ignored everything around himself, even Sebastian.

A strange sensation overcame him as he realized that he started to float up as well.

"Pretty cool, right?"

"Get me down!" Matthew shouted.

"You're flying, man, appreciate the moment. It's not every day you can do this."

"I said get me down from here!"

"Pfft, alright, alright, you're so boring."

Sebastian spoke and Matthew was suddenly back where he sat.

The conversation continued until Matthew brought up the criminal who had been found that day.

Sebastian went pale as he learnt that Matthew already knew about what occurred.

"That was me." He replied with a cold and monotone voice, dropping the cheerful attitude.

"H- how.. how could you do something like that to someone?"

"The guy tried robbing me, simple, he had it coming. What I did to him wasn't even half of what he deserved."

"So you break all his bones? That surely wasn't the only thing you did since he can't even speak."

"Oh right, I forgot I told him to be quiet. The poor guy must still be scared to say a word.

He said as he laughed a bit which angered Matthew.

"You're laughing?! Sebastian, you're a criminal!"

Hearing those words felt as if someone had destroyed Sebastian's entire world.

"Me? A criminal? You might be blind or stupid or both because the actual criminal was the scumbag who thought I'd be an easy target to threaten at gun point!"

"But yo-"

"But I what? The law wouldn't have done shit to that guy, he probably wouldn't have been caught either. If I didn't have this power, who knows what would've happened to me. The only thing I did was give that piece of shit what was coming to him." Sebastian's face was starting to turn red with anger.

"You can't come here and call me a criminal for serving justice that wouldn't otherwise see the light of day to the scum of society. People who think like you are the reason why crime is so common."

"This isn't the way to d-"

"How are you going to stop me?"

Matthew went pale with fear and hearing those words made chills run down his entire body.

Sebastian saw this and his face softened, not wanting to make his friend worry.

"Matthew, please understand what I'm trying to say. I can change the world with this ability, nothing like this has ever happened in the entire history of humanity, it's my one chance to make a meaningful change. Please, don't tell the police about this, it'll only bring more problems."

Matthew stood in silence, battling in his mind whether or not he should say something to someone about all of this.

He made up his mind and finally spoke.

"Alright, it's not like anyone can stop you. Just please don't let this power get to your head."

Sebastian smiled and hugged Matthew.

"Thank you… and… I'm sorry about being rude these days, it's just been wild lately."

Matthew gave him a faint nod and stood up.

"You have more people to apologize to."

"Yeah you're right, I will."

After his conversation with Matthew, Sebastian went to talk with Katherine about the whole situation, then went to talk with Emily.

Katherine nearly fainted once Sebastian explained everything with proof, but was overall glad that Sebastian came to see her, she had been worried about him ever since the hospital and didn't know if it was a good idea to go visit him.

It took more convincing to get through to Emily, she was mad at Sebastian for hanging up on her but eventually she understood Sebastian's situation and let it go, not without insulting him many times first.

However, despite having the whole situation with his powers cleared out with his friends, none of them supported what he had done that night. Deep down they all felt something was very wrong.

Sebastian came home exhausted, which struck him as odd because he had slept well and all he did was talk.

A moment later Sebastian began to cough violently, he hadn't experienced something like this before.

Believing he was just sick from stress he thought to use his powers to fix himself up.

"I'm completely healthy," he said while looking at his hands.

He entered a state of panic once he saw that his powers failed him, instead he started to cough up blood. This had never happened before, no matter how sick he had been.

"Why isn't it working!?" He thought as he fell to the floor in agony.

A sensation similar to the one he felt when he ate the cursed apple right before he got his powers ran through his body.

Writhing in pain and confusion, he knew he had to seek answers from somewhere.

He loathed the thought of where he had to find the answers he needed, but the unbearable pain spoke louder than his grudge.

"I can't believe I'm about to do this to myself." He thought amidst the hell he endured.

"I'm asleep and speaking with my reflection."

His body stopped moving as completely lost consciousness.
